For all those with an appreciation for Chester draws, please bare with me.

Today, I have read the grand flourish to the end of a sentence… and wallah!

Ahhh ok, not heard this before. So I am the wallah of my household?!

Arabic term is super popular these days! My husband is Arab and his teenage nephew and friends say this every other sentence 😂 tbh so many people said it when I was a teen aswell looking back

It's not quite the responsibility you're looking for (unless you're the family odd-jobs person). Dhobi wallah, punkah wallah, chai wallah - It Ain't Half Hot Mum.

Talipesmum · 27/11/2025 11:07

I saw this on old website Hitched many years ago, and it became a bit of an in joke on there, a bit like “naice ham” on here. So I sometimes think people are saying it deliberately as a joke. Sometimes not!

ClaredeBear · 27/11/2025 11:19

Someone on my local Facebook page asked where the best places were to take her children “Trickle Treating”. People found this pleasantly amusing so didn’t give her a hard time but it just goes to show how meanings can be forgotten or change over time because she can’t have known that asking householders if they’d prefer a trick or treat was the point of the activity.

Lochroy · 27/11/2025 12:00

It did take me a few attempts to understand ball-ball 😂

Wallah always makes me laugh.

Today on FB I've seen somebody using "orso" instead of also and "balling their eyes out"

I once saw an advert for an automan which made me chuckle. And right beside it was an ad for a wardrobe “£50 will take £40” which was the first time I’ve seen haggling written down!

Seymour5 · 27/11/2025 18:58

I'd be weary of ads on FB! A person could loose money.

PendantScorner · 28/11/2025 16:00

@Pearlmaster500 , it's current slang, used for emphasis, like 'I swear (by God). Not the same as the wallah in chai-wallah, or and wallah.

You probably hear insha'allah a lot.

It means I swear to god 😂 my husband is Egyptian he speaks Arabic I know what it means, you say wallah for short I know tons and tons of Arabic speaking people who say wallah for short instead of wallahi. Inshallah has a completely different meaning to wallahi which I know obviously. I’ve said in all my posts it’s current slang? I’m confused why your telling me that

Thewindowdressing · 28/11/2025 18:29

"isnhaallah 10 minutes and I will waah the dishes"
"inshaallah I will be home in 15 min".
DH is banned from Inshaallah - ing me simce we've been together for about a year😂
SILs also give stern look after isnhaallah ftom husbands 😂

Wallah/voila does somewhat surprises me because I would think English speakers are more familiar with French than Arabic

What !? The only country less likely to try with a foreign language is the Americans.

We can't even manage the other languages in our own island. (Which have all been been suppressed at some point or the other ...)

RaraRachael · 28/11/2025 18:33

Aren't people saying/writing "Wallah" as they've misheard "Voila".

I have no knowledge of any Arabic though.

JadedCat · 28/11/2025 18:36

Earlier this week I had a “visa vie” 😳

Oh, you'd be surprised how many words have snuck into English. Alcohol, algebra and algorithm sprint to mind (and alembic if you are a fan of alcohol 😀)

zero too

I've posted this one on previous pedant threads, but its worth repeating as it amuses me and is just so fucking mad Grin

Moore's O'Liam.

It was on the local FB page because someone had vandalised it.

@Pearlmaster500, I speak Arabic and haven't read every single post.

I'm confused as to why someone in Pedants' corner is so reluctant to punctuate her post.

I don’t know whether to howl with laughter or horror. That’s — I have no words for what that is.

It made me smile when I started hearing teenagers call each other habibi/habiti at work - and one wailed 'Ya hayati' on Tuesday.

PendantScorner · 28/11/2025 20:27

habibti

Another market place classic..

Bran new. Does anyone want to buy before I go through the rig and roll of returning it?
