How many syllables in 'diamond'

Aparecium · 24/07/2025 16:07

I'm in SE England and always say it in two syllables: DI-mond. But I've just been listening to an audiobook read in a very RP accent, and every character gives it three syllables: DI-a-mond. The a is more of a neutral shwah sound than a flat a.

AFAIK I speak RP with a slight foreign accent at times (1st gen immigrant).

So, which is right?

Hmmm difficult one.

I initially thought surely it’s 3. Di a mond

The way it’s said is 2 though.

However, with the shape of our mouths, it’s not really possible to go from the I of Diamond to the M, as to make the M sound correctly you kinda pass through a somewhat silent A.

If you don’t then you say Di Mund which isn’t really how the word is said. So I’m still sticking with 3.

Edit to add, having said that, neither way is really wrong, di-a-mond/di-mond so I think it’s impossible to really say.

Edited

Ok sure if you’re prince & the revolution!

RP accent here.
Diamond 2 - Di-mond
Library 3 - Li-brer-ree.

It's a bit like 'library' isn't it? That third syllable is there but it's not.

Do you honestly call it a librar?!! The third syllable is definitely there. 🤦‍♀️

Lots of people say something close to lib-ree, me included. There is a third syllable in the middle, the ruh bit (lib-ruh-ree) but it's so faint you can hardly hear it. Diamond is a bit like this because even when it's said with three syllables, the middle one is really faint. I think it's a bit fainter in diamond.

myplace · 24/07/2025 19:29

The dia rhymes with fire.

Diremond maybe.

SW and I would say it like you. I hate it when people put extra syllables in things, DH insists on saying ath-er-lete.

3 syllables isn't extra, it's correct. There is no way the vowel combination 'ia' can be one syllable. The correct pronunciation is die - er-mond.

However, I agree atherlete and assemberly are VERY annoying.

Di monds are a girls best friend

What about Shirley Bassey though.

That’s definitely more..Di ah monds are forever

NormasArse · 24/07/2025 19:35

It’s almost three; the a is very softly said.

I’d say library in three too.

NW England.

ShinyWorthKeeping · 24/07/2025 19:37

East Midlands and it's almost 3, the 'a' just follows the 'di' very softly and almost not there.

Flyswats · 24/07/2025 19:52

Depends who is speaking

If you're from the East End and you say "Diamond Geezer" its 2 syllables

If you're Queen Camilla and you say "Pass my my diamond dahlink" its obviously 4

Library has three clear syllables, albeit the second is very short: LIE-bruh-ree.

I don’t see any difference between diamond or library. Both have 3 syllables but lots of people pronounce them as thought they have 2 or maybe 2.5 with a slightly swallowed syllable.

The middle syllable, obviously!

Lonelycrab · 24/07/2025 20:00

I think a lot depends on how fast you say the word. Said quickly diamond is obviously di-mund. But said slowly, it sounds a bit weird to say it like that I think.

Secretary is normally seh-cut-tree, but when I say Secretary of State it’s more seh-cruh-teh-ree of state. I have no idea why.

Makingpeace · 24/07/2025 20:05

Ddakji · 24/07/2025 19:56

Yes but they'd said third syllable. The third syllable makes the /ee/ sound at the end. Unless you count first, third, second (which is also wrong) 🤦‍♀️😂

Sec-cut-tree is completely wrong. It's not obvious at all. Sec-re-ter-ee.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/07/2025 20:06

Three. Di-a-mond though the 'a' is weeny, really

treesandsun · 24/07/2025 20:07

I would say it as two . But if I was playing charades or explaining it to somebody else- it would probably be three die/dye a mond

Somnambule · 24/07/2025 20:07

As pp said - it's a diphthong, ie two vowels squished together. The English language is full of them - coal, light, crane, chive...

MonGrainDeSel · 24/07/2025 19:27

I'm not sure what has aggrieved me more here: missing the second syllable in library, or the miss-ordering of ordinal numbers and calling the missing middle syllable the third one. Who counts first, third, second?

Come on people.
