How many syllables in 'diamond'

I'm in SE England and always say it in two syllables: DI-mond. But I've just been listening to an audiobook read in a very RP accent, and every character gives it three syllables: DI-a-mond. The a is more of a neutral shwah sound than a flat a.

AFAIK I speak RP with a slight foreign accent at times (1st gen immigrant).

So, which is right?

SW and I would say it like you. I hate it when people put extra syllables in things, DH insists on saying ath-er-lete.

TeenToTwenties · 24/07/2025 16:11

SE. I would give it 3, or 2.5 really. Definitely not Di Mond.

SemmaLina · 24/07/2025 16:12

I’d say it with 2-5 syllables ( edited from 3 , as the er sound is a very short sound )
Die er mund
Ath leet

Lafufufu · 24/07/2025 16:12

Its 2.5 syllables for me 🤷🏻‍♀️

ExponentialDelivery · 24/07/2025 16:13

in between, 2.5, the a is very short

FancyCatSlave · 24/07/2025 16:15

2.5/3
Di-a-mond here but I can’t quite explain how I say the a as it’s subtle. It’s a bit like with the d in Wednesday - it’s there but also not.

slightlydistrac · 24/07/2025 16:23

It's a bit like 'library' isn't it? That third syllable is there but it's not.

MarxistMags · 24/07/2025 16:28

2 syllables. Di mond. Scottish accent !

Needmorelego · 24/07/2025 16:36

Definitely just 2 "Di-mond"
@slightlydistrac I do sometimes over say library as "libe-er-er-a-ee" just to wind my daughter up 😂

Library has three clear syllables, albeit the second is very short: LIE-bruh-ree.

Die mund 2
Lie bree 2
Don't forget written language does not give authority as to how things 'should' be pronounced.
It's simply an attempt to record how words were pronounced in one place and at one time.
Spoken language is always evolving and much more quickly than written language.

RightOnTheEdge · 24/07/2025 17:36

Two for all of those, North Yorkshire.
Die-mund,
Ath-leet,
Lie-bree.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/07/2025 17:50

Two and a half.

Tia247 · 24/07/2025 17:54

I say lie-bree too. and I've never heard anyone pronounce the first d in Wednesday.

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/07/2025 17:56

I half say the second r in library and the d in Wednesday. My tongue goes to the right place to say it but there's barely any sound comes out.

Sundaybananas · 24/07/2025 17:58

Di-ah-mond
Lie-bra-ree
Wed-nes-day

squashyhat · 24/07/2025 17:59

I would say Wed-nz-day, so 3 syllables but not how it's spelled!

Zempy · 24/07/2025 18:00

SE and would use three syllables, including the “a”

Lambswools · 24/07/2025 18:00

I don't say the "a". Can't claim to be well spoken though, I often skip 't"s too 🤣

Seymour5 · 24/07/2025 18:16

Scottish accent, slightly north of England influence now.

Diamond 2ish
library 3
weDnesDay 3 with both Ds
athlete 2

I really don’t understand 3 syllables in athlete?

DrFoxtrot · 24/07/2025 18:19

I say it in about 2.25 syllables 😆 a bit like saying Violet - there is a small extra syllable there.

Teajenny7 · 24/07/2025 18:20

2.5 as the 'a,' is short. Lowland west coast o Scotland accent.

DalstonsRhubarb · 24/07/2025 18:21

For me the first syllable is a diphthong, so a little bit more than 2 but less than 3.

Absentmindedsmile · 24/07/2025 18:21

3
dia -mon- d (almost silent last syllable)
