Today I've seen someone talking about people named Evans as in Chris, and the name has been written Evan's, several times. Why would you think a name requires an apostrophe?

As an Italian-speaker, my pet hate was seeing "Panninni's" everywhere in the mid-2000s when hot sandwiches were a big deal.

The ultimate 😆

Other apostophes that annoy me are the ones so often seen in well or ill. Is it autocorrect that does that?

Yes. I am frequently needing to correct autocorrect on this.

StPancreasPiano · 28/06/2025 07:37

Autocorrect needs a written warning, it's not fit for purpose.

Seymour5 · 28/06/2025 07:39

We missed a trick, surely this thread is about apostrophe’s?

Jewel1968 · 28/06/2025 07:52

Where I live a graffiti artist used to go around inserting apostrophes where needed. I wonder if he erased those that weren't required.

What makes you think it was a he?

Jewel1968 · 28/06/2025 09:38

@NormaSears someone told me they had seen him at work. I guess they might have been wrong on their assessment as it was dark.

NormaSears · 28/06/2025 09:40

Thank's Smile

IsoldeWagner · 28/06/2025 09:44

Yesterday, on the BBC news, their headline at the bottom of the screen read "Jeff Bezo's Wedding".
Perhaps they could have written "Bezo's's"?.

I am with you there, I hate the wrong use of punctuation.

Me to. Especially multiple exclamation marks! 😉

NormaSears · 28/06/2025 09:50

Me to what?

StPancreasPiano · 28/06/2025 10:10

To me, to you.

This amused me Grin

😂😂😂😂

A deli in town had ‘panini’s’ on their blackboard. It irritated me so much that I eventually went in and told them the plural of panino is panini, no S required, and certainly no apostrophe.

StPancreasPiano · 28/06/2025 15:19

I've just seen Boy George's response to JK Rowling "Say's the botox ridden witch? Get on your broomstick". That apostrophe has merely confirmed that I was correct in my original opinion.

Indeed. What a charmer.

There's a post up just now which mentions tree's. A couple of times. Tree's have been cut down.

Please, someone, make it stop...

upinaballoon · 01/07/2025 12:11

I read a post a few days ago. It included about five plurals. Four were correct and one had an unnecessary apostrophe. We're not supposed to correct but I had a little longing to send a private message to ask what it was that caused the poster to put one there.

(Sorry, not an apostrophe, but it's not worth starting a new thread for - I saw 'hunni' the other day.)

EBearhug · 01/07/2025 12:29

It might have been autocorrect. I believe its existence is solely to sabotage my ability to write coherently. It appears to have decided thry is more likely than they as just one example.

On a market stall in London once I saw the handwritten sign - Christma’s card’s and Xma’s wrapping.

Im pretty sure I met Christma at DS class party but not Xma.
