Using the word loose as the word lose. Why?

It seems so many on MN use loose in place of lose, I see it on here regularly. Could possibly understand if they had similar meanings..but they are not interchangeable in any way to my knowledge.

No one muddles up noose and nose, so it's not the typo or 'one letter' thing

But nose and noose are pronounced very differently. Their respective spellings make sense.

Lose does sound like it should be spelt luse or looze.

Still annoys me every time I see it spelt wrong - which is all the bloody time on this site!!

Carouselfish · 07/03/2025 06:31

I knowwww. Bought and brought are the two that blow my mind.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/03/2025 06:34

The people complaining on that thread about lose/loose had apparently failed to notice breech in the thread title instead of breach.
Woefully inadequate pedantry.

TheFirstTimeEverISawYourFace · 07/03/2025 06:35

Can you really not think why op?

Ellie1015 · 07/03/2025 06:35

Because they both have an oo sound in the middle so either of them might be spelt loose easy to forget which one is which.

SallyWD · 07/03/2025 06:35

Ita obviously because the word "lose" has the long "oo" sound so people think it has two os.

I’ve just seen this on another thread and winced. It’s almost as aggravating as “bare” with me which is flippin’ everywhere on this site.

I've seen it on a headstone.

Lose doesn't rhyme with nose though does it? Or close. So I SUPPOSE it's an easy mistake to make. Not really hard to figure out. Oh plus the difference of one letter. 🤯

SwerveCity · 07/03/2025 06:40

A very basic yet common spelling mistake that you see all over social media. I could forgive a child but it is rather annoying seeing adults not know the difference.

Velvian · 07/03/2025 06:42

I think the most irritating thing is that it is a relatively new error, but it is everywhere!

They might, maybe nose or noose are used quite as frequently on here.

It's not difficult to figure out why some people write loose for lose. The reason can be put into two broad groups:

  • it has been misspelt. This could be for a variety of reasons and will be particular to the poster.
  • It autocorrected and they didn't spot it happening.

Then add in the fact lots of people aren't bothered enough about making mistakes on MN to proofread what they write before posting it.

It might even shock you to discover there are many people who will use the right spelling themselves, can spot others writing the wrong word and it simply doesn't bother them.

Plus, I'm willing to bet loose isn't written in place of lose quite as frequently as those who get wound up by it think it is.

GreyDuck · 07/03/2025 06:42

Honestly, its fine to be annoyed about spelling, but to not understand why people use a logical miss-spelling in a language with ridiculously inconsistent phonics?

But 'lose' has an 'oo' sound and 'nose' has an 'oh' sound. Basically, 'lose' sounds like 'looze', so it's not surprising so many people misspell it as 'loose'.

Because they aren't as well educated as you. Well done you.

Spot on!

Consider: through, though, tough, brought, bough. Same string of four letters; five different pronunciations.

Carouselfish · 07/03/2025 06:31

You've just spelt 'know' with four 'w's!

BobnLen · 07/03/2025 07:05

Before everything was online I guess we didn't see bad spelling so much, it's probably always been there but now people see the wrong spelling and think it's correct so more people spell words wrong

CerealPosterHere · 07/03/2025 07:08

RickiRaccoon · 07/03/2025 01:57

Just a misspelling. It makes sense what they're doing if you try and align it with other spellings.

They want the oo sound at the start and the spelling 'loose' seems like it will represent that sound (and it does but we use it to mean 'loose' with an s sound at the end, not the z sound). Meanwhile, 'lose' is spelt similar to close/dose/chose/hose/nose/rose which have a completely different vowel sound (and either an s sound or z sound at the end).

This completely. I do know the difference but to me they are the wrong way round!

WhenYouSayNothingAtAll · 07/03/2025 07:10

Short answer ? Phonics and the long oo sound in lose .

NotMeNoNo · 07/03/2025 07:12

I can't get worked up about this because DH is dyslexic and I see things like this every time he texts me. IMO It's rude to judge people on their English unless you are their teacher or responsible for their work.

However you see mis-spellings more often now, since social media makes publishers of us all. My unedited thoughts and spellings are here for everyone to read. People are reading those spelling errors and maybe getting confused about what the right word even is. Particularly where the spell check doesn't pick it up.

I'm never going to think the nose on my face has 2x o. It doesn't sound like it would. But lose sounds like there should be 2x o.

Maybe we should change the spelling of lose to looze. Have looze and loose. 😁

Roystonv · 07/03/2025 07:13

Weirdly, you have found my Achilles heel, for the life of me I cannot get these two clear in my head. I just cannot separate them yet I know I should. I will make it my job of the day. Thank you for giving me the push!

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/03/2025 07:19

verycloakanddaggers · 07/03/2025 01:00

It is because there is only one letter difference and the words sound similar when spoken.

It is an unremarkable spelling mistake. I find it more weird so many posters can't control themselves and have to point it out!

They don't sound the same when spoken.
Loose has a s sound. Lose is more like a z.

Can you really not think why op?

Exactly.

It really doesn’t matter does it, this isn’t real life. It’s not an academic paper, it’s a corner on the internet.

I think posters who comment on spag have an incredible lack of awareness.

Have you considered that your ridiculous comments might stop one genuine poster (who happens to have a poor grasp of spag) from asking for help?
