Yet another thread where this phrase has come up. It makes me want to scream into a pillow. Where has "step foot" come from?!? And can it bugger off back again?

Language evolves.

Step foot will be the new set foot.

Upmost will be the new utmost.

Perhaps ya'll need to chill out.

Changeissmall · 10/03/2025 19:39

Yes, yes and more yes.
Latest common annoyance for me is ‘his’ for ‘he’s’

E.g. I’m meeting my husband later and his taking me out for lunch’.

Theimpossiblegirl · 10/03/2025 19:51

Wallah

That is my contribution.

HobnobsChoice · 10/03/2025 20:01

"change is underfoot" . A friend of mine wrote that when she was pregnant with a girl after having several sons. Yes, that is a change but it's "afoot". The baby is about 8 years old now and I still occasionally remember it and get annoyed.

Squirrelsnut · 10/03/2025 20:06

I can't bear 'I was spitting feathers' to mean angry. Noooooooooo! No no no.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 10/03/2025 20:06

It's a good example of an eggcorn, isn't it?

pleasedonotfeedme · 10/03/2025 20:06

Yes! Ditto “tow the line” and “free reign” 😬😱

Mydadsbirthday · 10/03/2025 20:07

Argh! I hate this too OP. I’ve seen it on a few threads recently.
It was I who started the thread about he’s / his.
I was going to write “it was me” but that felt wrong!

soupyspoon · 10/03/2025 20:07

To-ing and 'throwing'.

Eee, I'm spitting feathers, love. Put kettle on and we'll have a nice cup of tea.

Is this the dhobi wallah or the punka wallah or the French voila?

I think you are right with 'It was I who started the thread', but I would be pleased if someone would dissect the sentence and explain all the parts of speech there.

Sadly, it's the French. It's the new tadaah!

Mila6464 · 10/03/2025 20:29

I hate the phrase 'to take accountability' instead of 'to take responsibility'. A lot of these phrases are Americanisms. People hear some gibberish on TV and copy it.

MissRoseDurward · 10/03/2025 20:44

Just seen another one -

'Queue me/DH/whoever [doing something or other]

No, it's 'Cue me...'

Libre2 · 10/03/2025 20:50

The whole bring/take thing is Irish if I recall correctly from my time in Dublin.

I saw "lone behold" on an SM post the other day arrrgh

I saw that on here the other day for the first time. Hope it doesn’t become as ubiquitous as “up most”.

BrightOrangeDahlias · 10/03/2025 20:54

Glad it's not just me that gets wound up by these things!

I hate the growing prevalence of 'it's not that big of a deal'. It's an American import and I absolutely loathe it. And it is that big a deal....

I had an American colleague once who said, in all seriousness, "let's get this document signaturised" * *

I haven't seen this one before, but doubtless will come across it soon.

As to whether people think about the meaning of words anymore: I suspect not. In my opinion it's because people don't read anymore. Words have become no more than sounds, and not part of a wider structured language.

People do still read. Trouble is, they read stuff full of errors on the internet, and those errors sink in.

KnickerlessParsons · 10/03/2025 22:51

My manager said today something along the lines of "so and so has changed tact and now he's going to do xyz instead"

It's tack not tact 😡

This.

Has anyone else noticed a new one - people writing “yea” instead of “yeah”? I reckon this is one of those internet errors. It’s driving me mad though - when I see “yea” the sound in my head is “yay” not “yeah”.

Don’t even get me started on “I text him yesterday” with “text” as a past form instead of “texted”. I can’t bear it…

Don't you mean "it's not just I"?

Don't you mean "it's not just I"?

Or even ‘it’s not just myself’?

Wallah!

ShillyShallySherbet · 11/03/2025 05:56

To be fair to people, I think step foot does make sense in the context it’s being used. Also could of and could’ve sound exactly the same when spoken so I get it. It still grates on me though!
