Stop putting ‘I’ as the object in a sentence

ProfessorPeppy · 16/06/2024 17:45

Everyone does this. Everyone. It’s so simple: if you’re the subject of the sentence, you’re ‘me’.

DH and I bought a chihuahua- correct

DCs and I took chihuahua for a walk - correct

The chihuahua barked at DH and I - WRONG

Please send the chihuahua back to DH and I - WRONG WRONG WRONG!

If in doubt, take out DH to hear how wrong it sounds:

Please send the chihuahua back to I.

The chihuahua barked at I.

Thank you 😥

@Pocketfullofdogtreats

Correct ✅

Because you'd never say me went to the beach. Therefore you shouldn't say [someone else] and me went to the beach.

There's all sorts of fancy rules, but by and large, if you remove everyone else from the sentence and work out whether you'd say me or I, that's your answer.

My very important boss who is very very high up in the company, always sends emails saying things like "could you copy in Jack and I to your response". Makes me inwardly eeek!!!!

Thank you. Your boss thinks it sounds posher 😁. I'm very disappointed he doesn't say 'Could yourself copy in Jack and myself'.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/06/2024 18:47

I once gave my very important boss a lecture about possessives and why that plural didn't need an apostrophe when he asked me why I hadn't typed one.

Georgesbar24 · 16/06/2024 18:47

You’re just showing off that you can spell chihuahua.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 16/06/2024 18:35

I get confused with this too. So, a photo with My Dad and Me is correct - great. But what about My Dad and Me went to the beach - not correct!

The pronouns change according to the grammatical function they are performing in relation to the verb Shock

That's never been that easy to explain to those who don't get it intuitively. It's got a lot harder since most people started to associate "pronouns" with something to do with toilets.

Jokes aside, I barely went to school. I'm ok, I ended up going to university, getting a first, later a doctorate, but I don't know the bones, the fundamentals of grammar. So whenever one of you posts in "pedants' corner" I take a look. I've found your explanation helpful - this is the one I would've got wrong "The chihuahua barked at DH and I". Thanks!

The chihuahua is the subject of the sentence and you and your DH are the objects.
I is the subject and me is an object is my understanding
I totally agree, the grammar I was taught at schools was nothing short of useless, so I am trying to understand as I go along.

Easier way to solve the issue (and avoid people criticising or correcting you, not necessarily correctly);

We have a Chihuahua, he's six months old now.

The Chihuahua annoying little git wouldn't stop yapping at us this morning.

The kids reckon we should trade him in for a cat.

This would complicate the grammar massively. The correct pronoun for a cat is "Your Majesty" at all times.

No, I is confused

Me, myself & I are all confused.

'My Dad & me' may be correct, but it doesn't sound right. Grew up in the late 70s early 80s. We weren't taught properly.

Autocarrot did it for me Grin I learnt Spanish from el buho Duo so ‘chihuahua’ was a struggle.

Yeah, I expect ‘I’ and ‘me’ will soon be replaced with ‘eye/mi’, so as not to offend those who don’t identify as themselves.

DH always says, ‘just between you and I’ which makes me snap ME ME MEEEEEE but now I’m having second thoughts…?

Nah. He just didn't watch 70s' Kids' TV.

Haha he most certainly did, in the Alice and Crow days, as opposed to the Cosmo and Dibs years of my youth Grin I’ll remind him of this next time.

I think the UB40 versh is the best.

Just take the other person out in your mind and think if you'd say me or I.

Then do that, but include the other person & put them first.

Easy!

MadameMassiveSalad · 16/06/2024 19:14

I hate it when people add "myself" instead of me. It makes them sound stupid. Sorry. Not sorry.

Lolainthegym · 16/06/2024 19:18

This really bothers me, too!

I’ve noticed Prince William makes this mistake in speeches, which annoys me even more for some reason!

True, we wasn't.

The use of Me all the time only works if you're Cookie Monster

2Orangesandlemons · 16/06/2024 19:33

THANK YOU- this is a pet peeve of mine, along with using 'too' incorrectly.

He doesn't always. I have heard him get it right and I have heard Catherine get it wrong but she got it right in the statement she put out on Friday!

Easy!

I can't remember at what age I learnt it but a friend clearly remembers being told to separate the two or more people involved, think how you say it for each one, and then put them together again.

Applepencilplant · 16/06/2024 19:54

I like this post alot. I hope I don't loose the ability to write proper sentences.

NoseNothing · 16/06/2024 20:06

Completely with you, OP. One of my absolute pet peeves. Sounds ridiculous when spoken and looks hideous when written down.

I remember the use of, for example, “John and I went to the beach” being drilled into us as absolutely sacrosanct but I don’t remember being taught when it was wrong to use “John and I”. Primary education in the 90s, secondary in the 00s.

It’s an extremely common mistake. I work with some very intelligent people who do it constantly. I’ve also had plenty of people try and correct me when I’ve used “John and me” correctly. In fact, I actually posted on this board about it once (as a reply to another post, with a different username) and had some (so called) pedants tell me I was wrong! Plenty who agreed with me though!
