Can't bear the bare

quisensoucie · 13/02/2024 06:38

As I age, my tolerance for mny things diminishes. My reserve tolereance tank, in relation to knowing the difference between bare and bear, is empty!
So many people cannot 'bare this/that/him, etc'
Even accounting for varying educational attainment, surely context aids comprehension so the correct spelling is used??

'Bare' when it should be 'bear' irritates me so much! I suppose people could blame autocorrect, but really? It's so bad now that my brain wants to write 'bare' as well! Gah.

Yep I hate it. 'Bare' with me.. no thanks!! My spelling isn't great but bare when it should be bear doesn't even make sense.

You're allowed to moan about things like this in this lovely little section of Mumsnet.

It took me years to learn bear with me. I am reasonably educated, but don't find spelling the easiest. In my head why would an animal be involved in patience? But asking a naked person to wait made more sense to me...
Autocorrect was no help, nor spelling. These days it might be picked up as a commonly confused word....but now I get it right.
So please 'bare' with those who get it wrong....

My boss gets it wrong on a daily basis. Think it would be a kindness to point it out or will they take offence?

And when is it offense?

The new one on here is, "No" as in, "I don't no".

Yes this is Pedants' Corner. I've never yet seen a thread where the OP doesn't themselves make an error when pointing out someone else's.

The point is, as already said, people make mistakes. People don't always understand the rules of language or grammar (or don't care). People don't all have the same educational attainment.

Plenty of mistakes irritate me mildly but for all of the above reasons, I move on quickly without giving it much thought.

I'm much less tolerant of mistakes make by those who should know better - editors, journalists, official publications (or my own area, academia).

It is only offense in the USA
but offensive if used in and English context!

Edited

I can't bear the " We was sitting", for example. Or, " One of them people, over there". I have to click off the thread...

OP, it was always inculcated in me NEVER to start a sentence with 'And' or 'But'.
I actually think there is some very fine writing where 'And' and 'But' can start a sentence, but I always notice it.

Were one a nudist, it could be correct to say that 'my friends were bare with me'.

Regarding the very first message on this thread, it is incorrect to use two consecutive question marks. Would you write two consecutive commas, or colons, or full stops?

I can't bear the " We was sitting"

”I was sat” is worse imo.

Two full stops...a short ellipsis?😁

This approach is annoying.

It's not incorrect. There's more than one way to be 'correct'. As you well know, having two or more ? or ! is a way of adding further emphasis in writing. It's long been in use.

I never know which of the bare/bear to use in this context, so rarely use it in a (written) sentence. I guarantee that even after reading this thread that I won’t remember the correct word, I just have a mental block with it.

Is there a ditty or similar as a way of remembering?

@Oneearringlost
I have noticed a huge increase in we was; rather than we were.
Another annoyance; I borrowed him money! You loaned him money.
