To think so many posts have poor English?

What's happened to people posting properly? Poor language, missing words, bad punctuation

OP posts:

I think many people just don't care at all how they come across, it's nothing to do with dyslexia etc. They simply don't mind if others think they're thick as shit. They don't bother proofreading before posting, as if their opinion is so important it must be rushed on to the page. On a thread earlier today the OP had used "was you" instead of "were you" in the title. Someone pointed this out and suggested the OP changed it so as not to make people cringe but the OP didn't care in the slightest. That's what I just don't get, I would be ashamed if my grammar led people to think I was stupid and uneducated.

Sorry, but cringing over the bad grammar of other people when you especially knew what they meant.. get a grip.
This is MN where people come to rant or get advice. It is not a place where you are being marked on your spelling and use of language.
Correcting someone when they are reaching out is just ass hole behaviour.
If I rang the Samaritans and was corrected on my grammar, I would be causing merry hell.

Sentence fragments ...

Isn't there a pedants' corner somewhere?

'change' not 'changed'; comma needed between cringe and but.

That's what I just don't get, I would be ashamed if my grammar led people to think I was stupid and uneducated.

'get' is a weak verb, suggests laziness and lack of awareness of more meaningful verbs.

You're not coming across as clever as you seem to think you are.

TeaKitten · 09/02/2024 22:19

GetWhatYouWant · 09/02/2024 22:17

Are you being ironic here or don't you realise you've used 'no' twice when it should be 'know'?

It’s not ironic, I’ve already made it clear I'm
not bothered or responsible for other peoples reading skills. Not afraid of grammar police, go for it 🤷‍♀️

Is it really so hard to understand?
My foster daughter only had education till year 9 due to no fault of hers.
I didn't have a good education and undiagnosed dyslexia till adulthood

I had a mum who was a gramma and punctuation obsessive but not everyone had that privilege

The post I referred to was someone asking if anyone had appeared on Top of the Pops, completely trivial and hardly the same as reaching out for help and of course doesn't compare in the slightest to someone contacting the Samaritans. I'm sure if someone put a thread up where they were clearly having a mental health crisis no one would be correcting their grammar. I think you've overreached somewhat.

Oh, I don't know. As a noun 'get' has its uses, especially in the north.

ShowOfHands · 09/02/2024 22:24

I've always been a bit of a pedant and rolled my eyes somewhat at some mistakes on some occasions.

I have a ds who is dyslexic and his inability to spell has resulted in severely low self esteem. I've witnessed him smack himself on the hand and call himself stupid with tears in his eyes. He dreads writing, despite having a lovely way with words and a fabulous vocabulary. Try and write it down and it all falls apart.

I am thoroughly ashamed that I ever judged a single person on their spag. I got into education a few years ago now and working with students from all manner of backgrounds, I try my damndest every day to make sure nobody makes a child feel like my ds does.

I wholeheartedly support the notion that as long as people can make themselves understood, the intention and interaction are enough.

I will never, ever stop regretting how I used to think on occasion.

True pedantry is a love of language, not blind criticism without self awareness.

It does not matter though. Correcting people is just shitty behaviour. You knew what they meant.... you are just being a pedant. And probably the only contribution to their thread was berating their spelling or grammar.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/02/2024 22:26

You can have impeccable spelling and grammar (though many self-proclaimed pedants do not) and nevertheless come across as startlingly ignorant. One way in which you can do this is to display a total lack of understanding of your own educational (or other) privilege, and of the reasons why others may not have very good written English. It just makes you sound like a snide twat tbh. I am a teacher, can write accurately in 4 languages and have nearly 30 years' first-hand experience of the fact that poor spelling and grammar often do not indicate that someone is 'thick' or that they don't care about how they come across. Hth.

As a noun it is extremely useful. 'Obnoxious' or 'rude' or 'insensitive' ge would be quite useful on this thread.

OMGitsnotgood · 09/02/2024 22:28

Oops hit post too quickly *get

However someone using 'get' as a verb when slagging off other people's use of language made me laugh.

Thank you for your informative comments with which I agree. Unlike many people on this board I am happy to be corrected. I am actually clever as can be shown by my many academic and professional qualifications. One aspect of that comes from learning from one's mistakes which I am glad to do.

It makes the poster look really stupid. Being able to use your own language is a basic, and if you can't do that as an English speaking adult, people are rightly going to think you're a bit thick.

"Bare" / "bear"seems to pose a particular difficulty for some people. "Bare with me" literally means get naked with me. Literate people are laughing at you if you write that.

The word "cue" also seems to be one that some posters find difficult to comprehend. We need a big meme of Manuel from Faulty Towers to use on repeat.

But it doesn't matter so long as you can be understood apparently. Ignoring the fact that this makes no sense, because the correct use of language is how evolved humans are able to understand each other.

Yours Sincerely, a multi-published bestselling author and copywriter (and former teacher, but that doesn't count because my specialism was science). 😘

I'd suggest over-use of adverbs and inability to define articles are the main things you should work on before criticising others' SPAG. See also: The difference between fact and opinion. There are several other ways this could have been edited.

Why are you assuming it's their own language? UK has a large immigrant population for one, and people from all over the world use mumsnet.

Echobelly · 09/02/2024 22:37

If people are posting on phones you can get a lot of autocorrect errors and people don't always have the time to proofread so you get wrong words, missing words etc. Most of the errors in anything I post are because I thought I've typed one word but autocorrect has put in another and I didn't notice it until later.

I'm an editor by trade but TBH I don't tend to proofread posts, life is too short. But it does mean it's extra embarrassing to me when I get a wrong 'hear/here' 'there/their', 'too/to' 'it's/its' etc because of autocorrect.

Also this.

In my experience, adults who get their knickers in a twist over SPAG are insecure and not terribly bright and clinging to the one thing they think they're good at in life (but usually aren't, because humans are fallible).

Just unclench. As we say in Irish, listen with three ears, speak with one.
