Every time I read on here that someone brought something online or from a shop...Aargh! I feel the strong urge to scream. Anyone else similarly affected?

Same! I cannot STAND it! This atrocity is seen regularly in reviews online. Especially on Amazon

HerMammy · 10/11/2023 05:25

Another I cannot wrap my brain around is; OPs friend has asked for a loan of £50, OP asks; should I borrow her this? you would be loaning her it!!!

tankee · 10/11/2023 06:17

Brought instead of bought is my absolute biggest pet peeve. It's killing me on the Christmas threads atm!

TheChippendenSpook · 10/11/2023 06:30

I am very similarly affected!

While I am quite the pedant, I do think this may be a dialectic variation around the country.

TeenagersAngst · 10/11/2023 06:40

Oops, typo! Dialect not dialectic!

PersephonePomegranate23 · 10/11/2023 06:42

Wow, bringing a house somewhere would be some sort of fear!

Ugh, with you on loan, and similarly, 'itched' as a verb (as my infant school aged child seems to have picked up at school).

My pet peeve right now, is, anyways. So obviously influenced by American conversational style narrators in books and TV dialogue.

Arggghh.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 10/11/2023 06:43

Feat! Damn autocorrect!

TheLastPictureShow · 10/11/2023 06:49

Drives me bonkers, too. I just don’t understand it - how can you confuse ‘to bring’ with ‘to buy’?!

HappyMavis · 10/11/2023 06:51

Did they bye it or not though?!

decionsdecisions62 · 10/11/2023 07:57

What ? People actually say brought instead of bought? I haven't seen that.

bathroomcupnoard · 10/11/2023 08:14

Big static caravan on the back of a low loader and it works a treat.

That's a dialect thing, definitely. I couldn't get my head around it when I lived in Scotland.

Have and of really gets to me.

HerMammy · 10/11/2023 10:01

@idontlikealdi
I am Scottish and I've only ever seen it on MN, definitely not heard it here.

I'm Irish and never see it here either, but it gets mentioned on here. Maybe it's a rhotic/non-rhotic thing? Not sure if they sound similar in a non-rhotic accent.

ManchesterLu · 10/11/2023 10:52

If I'm in a bad mood, I'll reply 'Where are you bringing it from?'

I can hold my tongue most of the time, but if I'm in a bad mood, people being thick as two short planks REALLY grates on me.

For one thing I would say lending not loaning, where I live (and in the Oxford English dictionary) loan is a noun.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/11/2023 13:02

All be it.

Gets coat...

upinaballoon · 12/11/2023 12:17

There's a lot of gifting and loaning where I would give and lend.

'Purposefully' might be a perfectly acceptable alternative to 'purposely' or 'deliberately', according to the dictionary and every other person in the world, but it annoys me.

DRS1970 · 12/11/2023 12:20

Pacific instead of specific, and spear instead of sphere are my pet hates.

rainbowsparkle28 · 15/11/2023 18:22

Oh my goodness yes! Same with could of / should of...it is SHOULD HAVE! 😂😤

RunAwayFromWinter · 15/11/2023 23:17

Yes I know - could of and should of - aargh! While writing this post I just discovered that my phone autocorrects these and won't even let me type them

Listed for sale - Chester draws.

Its chest of drawers you fucking numbskull.

Devilsmommy · 15/11/2023 23:24

First time posting here, hope it's ok😁 am I the only one noticing the constant bear instead of bare? Also I too get annoyed with should/could of instead of have

OchonAgusOchonOh · 15/11/2023 23:26

Recommend me something.

Drives me mad. It's recommend something to me although I could recommend you to someone if you stopped misusing the word recommend.
