Every time I read on here that someone brought something online or from a shop...Aargh! I feel the strong urge to scream. Anyone else similarly affected?

OP posts:

Can I add cause in place of because. The fact they are two different words seems to be becoming lost.

Oh and the person who will inevitably turn up and say that language evolves can piss off before they start. Words have meaning.

'I could care less' is my particular bugbear tonight. Halloween Angry

Drives me bonkers, too. I just don’t understand it - how can you confuse ‘to bring’ with ‘to buy’?!

They aren't confusing "to bring" and "to buy", though, are they? They are confusing "brought" and "bought".

How? Because they sound similar, maybe? There is only one letter differentiating them. Probably the people who make this mistake don't even think about the infinitives. If they did, they'd probably have half a chance of not making the mistake.

Isn't 'cause an alternative spelling of 'cos? We were taught that 'cos was an acceptable shortening of because at primary school in the 70s.

I'm with you, any night, any day. WHY don't they look at the words? WHY don't they think about the logic of 'I couldn't care less'?

First time posting here, hope it's ok😁 am I the only one noticing the constant bear instead of bare? Also I too get annoyed with should/could of instead of have

Bear with me is correct. Bare with me is completely wrong. It's like they're saying 'get naked with me.'

Yes I know, it's the bear faced cheek instead of bare faced I keep seeing. sorry wrong way round in my post🤣

Devilsmommy · 16/11/2023 21:57

No it wasn't the wrong way round😆

Another I cannot wrap my brain around is; OPs friend has asked for a loan of £50, OP asks; should I borrow her this? you would be loaning her it!!!

Isn't it " lending it to her"?

Nicesalad · 16/11/2023 22:29

I also don't know why people have started saying "surgeries" instead of operations.

TenderDandelions · 16/11/2023 22:43

I've come across the "brought" thing a fair bit. London and South East. Another seemingly Kentish favourite is was instead of were.

"We was going in to town on Saturday" for example.

Tessisme · 16/11/2023 23:06

I have only ever seen bought/brought on Mumsnet. It does really annoy me.

But it's the loose thing that drives me mad. 'I thought I was going to loose a tooth.' For the first time ever, about a week ago, I saw it the other way round - 'lose' used Instead of 'loose', as in 'there is a lose brick in my garden wall.'

Givejimmybluntachance · 16/11/2023 23:11

It'll just be a phone typo. Nobody thinks they brought a house. Come on.

I know someone who had no idea they were two different words.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 16/11/2023 23:20

It drives me mad too, and the opposite, on a radio interview recently someone said he was bought up.
No.

CatchHimDerry · 16/11/2023 23:42

@Amybelle88 nahhh, “Chester draws” 😂 is that real?

Like PP, “should of” and “brought” are the main ones that I see and drive me batty, also “your” and “you’re” etc, I’ve even seen a “yore” recently

OhamIreally · 16/11/2023 23:55

I've sought you out to vent regarding "rein" "reign" and more astonishingly "rain".

I know I'm a twat. I can't help it.
