My friend uses the wrong words...

My very good, kind and lovely friend uses the word "pacific" rather than the correct term "specific". My fellow pedants, what do I do? I have turned a blind eye (or deaf ear) to it thus far, but it drives me crazy. Another lovely friend responded to my ds saying "How do you do?" (he is 18 mths - very cute!) by saying "Very well thank you and how are you?"!

Am I going straight to hell for being so judgemental?

vipers nest or vipers' nest?

hecate · 14/02/2008 13:41

Is that you, Lapin?????

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 13:45

Do you mean me, or Lavender Mist?

hecate · 14/02/2008 13:48

I meant you. Are you?

Or do we have a whole bunch of grammar..er...I want to say fetishists....

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 13:52

No! I am all bear and no rabbit.

I've paraded my sad pedantry all the way up this thread (or is it down?) - just look.

brimfull · 14/02/2008 13:56

dh can't say salary

he substitutes with celery

brimfull · 14/02/2008 13:56

or it may be the other way around

PrettyCandles · 14/02/2008 13:56

I rather like the idea of being a grammar fetishist...

hecate · 14/02/2008 14:01

Oh dear GOD I've just noticed where I am!! I've stumbled into the Pedants own den [horror]

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 14:15

Should we ask MNHQ to change it to Grammar Fetishists' Corner?

hecate · 14/02/2008 14:18

I rather think you have to, don't you?

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 14:20

Hmm, not sure. Suddenly all this picking over words and apostrophes seems a little sordid.

midnightexpress · 14/02/2008 14:24

...but I'm sure you could stop it if you wanted to Iorek?

hecate · 14/02/2008 14:27

you made me laugh!

The thought that from now on every time you all pick over something you're going to feel slightly dirty is oddly satisfying.

Lapin is going to KILL me for sullying pedants' corner....

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 14:30

I do feel dirty.

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 14:30

Not in a saucy way, you understand, just a bit grubby.

hecate · 14/02/2008 14:32

like you've just had a pot noodle, you mean??

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 14:35

A little, yes. Or crabsticks.

hecate · 14/02/2008 14:37

oooooooh, crabsticks. they're a little dirty too, aren't they? I could just go for some crabsticks, now you've mentioned them. Or a fried egg sandwich.

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 14:43

They are very dirty.

I often wonder about the dark art that is the creation of the crab stick, and the mysterious surimi that stands in for the crab.

Jackstini · 14/02/2008 14:50

Now I have to go and fry some eggs Hecate!!
dh has one that annoys me:
He says 'otherwords' instead of 'otherwise' If I have to correct him once more through gritted teeth......

TillyScoutsmum · 14/02/2008 14:53

Dp often tells me to stop being so pedantic (and pronounces it pee'dantic). I obviously correct him and consequently prove his point. He also uses it completely out of context which really irritates me

StealthPolarBear · 14/02/2008 14:56

I've noticed loads of people use "draw" instead of "drawer"

TheFallenMadonna · 14/02/2008 14:58

The letters pages of Private Eye have a bit of a debate going as to whether it should be Pedants' Corner, or Pedants Corner?

Has there been a similar debate here?

IorekByrnison · 14/02/2008 14:59

Do you mean that they spell it "draw" or pronounce it "draw"?
