Pedants' corner

Why am I still seeing ‘could of’ and other really annoying stuff?

Seymour5 · 26/10/2022 18:02

People have pointed out here on MN so often that surely everyone must be aware by now, that ‘could of’ makes no sense. It is ‘could have’ or ‘could’ve’. ‘Bare with me’ , is another, but I’m sure they don’t mean get naked! We will of course ‘bear with’ you.

‘My friend and I’ going somewhere is always more pleasant to read (or hear) than ‘me and my friend’ or the even worse ‘myself and my friend’.

I’m aware I’m pedantic, I know its all been said before, but I can’t stop an involuntary wince when I suddenly spot one or more of the above. And I don’t think I’m alone. Am i?

Because no one cares about your judgy twattery. This is an informal discussion space, not an English exam.

Rhondaa · 26/10/2022 18:26

'Children are at school for around 14 years, which is plenty long enough for these things to be drummed into almost all of them.'

'Plenty long enough' doesn't sound quite right, perhaps a spag pedant could advise?

Third. It is extremely nasty to put people off posting on here because something bothers YOU. You're one poster. It really does NOT matter if it bothers YOU. I'd much rather have dozens of posters posting with errors, than too afraid of getting 'told off' for incorrect SPAG.

Forth: phones. Mine's a little bastard. It miscorrects my posts all the time. I've run out of shits to give.

It gets my goat too. I I can only conclude that it is because people are stupid.

Of course it is could have, or would have. There is no real excuse for it. After all, you surely say "I HAVE done something", not "I OF done something", or you should anyway. It is just the same, only with the words could, would or should inserted.

"Bare with me" is just ridiculous, although makes me laugh as I think of the person standing there stripping themselves naked. 🤣

Or have learning difficulties or mobility issues making typing difficult or struggled to access help at school and didn’t learn properly or have English as a second language or any other of the millions of reasons other than ‘thick’.

I hate the misuse of the word 'ignorant'.

Ledwood85 · 26/10/2022 18:32

MacDonald's rather than McDonald's.

One of the worlds most recognizable brands, each of us have had decades of exposure to adverts, signage, packaging. The name has been etched into our brains.

Even autocorrect will adjust to the correct spelling, given how pervasive it is.

Your/you're - their/there/they're - could have/could of - I understand how it happens, but MacDonald's - I don't get it.

Thatboymum · 26/10/2022 18:32

I find people who correct other people far more irritating to be quite honest

DiscoveryofASingularWitch · 26/10/2022 18:33

I don't care, I churn out professional writing all day at work. I'd judge someone who worked for me who wrote badly because they're being paid to write well.

But this isn't work, it is not even real life, just made up life on the internet.

I don't proofread what I write here and wouldn't dream of being a judgemental arse on here.

This is why I hate these cunty threads.

There was a woman in my local FB group a few years ago in the most awful abusive marriage.

When I suggested she turned to MN, she said no way as she'd seen so many threads like this and she didn't feel up to having her grammar and spelling picked apart.

Sadder still was that so many people agreed with her and yet I live in one of the poorest and most deprived boroughs in London, where so many women could do with the help and advice given here.

Bare with me" is just ridiculous, although makes me laugh as I think of the person standing there stripping themselves naked. 🤣

I had a colleague put this in an email to me. I replied with "you might want to get your kit off over it, but count me out".

All I got back was "Eh? I don't understand".

YoureOnlyAWinceAway · 26/10/2022 18:41

YANBU

I've used MN FOR 14+ years and I blame Penis Beaker, correct grammar seemed to decline since then, same as the over aggression on AIBU.

Sparklingbrook · 26/10/2022 18:41

I not too fussed. On a fast moving chat thread then as long as I know what is meant it’s fine even with incorrect grammar or spelling.
People pointing out mistakes are tiresome.

There are places where it all matters a lot (job applications, written exams etc) but an internet Chat thread isn’t one. IMO.

JudithHarper · 26/10/2022 18:45

I am sick of seeing 'rediculous'.

You’re right of course. I get that there is autocorrect, and fat fingers like mine make typos. I probably worded my post badly too, but surely we’re all allowed to share a little irritation occasionally?

Riapia · 26/10/2022 18:53

OP Anybody can post on MN.
Whatever their class.

Port1aCastis · 26/10/2022 18:55

I agree with Worra because a few years ago I asked for advice from this site re: a violent husband, consequently I was picked apart by the grammar police because my OP had errors. If posters knew what I was going through at that time they hopefully would have been more helpful.

Oysterbabe · 26/10/2022 18:56

Wow the judgy cunts are out in force tonight.
Can you imagine that there might be people who are dyslexic, speak English as a second language, had a chaotic childhood with poor education or who just get it wrong for various other reasons? They are allowed to post on mumsnet and I'd rather read their threads than a version of this one posted time and time again.

worraliberty · 26/10/2022 18:59

Not when you're publicly making some people feel like shit. There's really no need for it.

It's like the internet equivalent of pointing and laughing at people who just aren't very good at something.

Terrible response, clearly she should have bowed down to your superiority instead 🙂

Sparklingbrook · 26/10/2022 19:00

This is like being back at school. OP needs to write ‘See Me’ whenever a SPAG crime is committed.
