when you carry out a very routine action and it fails ?

You miss the coat peg you were aiming to hang the coat on ,the salt cellar drops through your fingers ,the lid of the toothpaste tube doesn't screw on straight .

It really irritates me when this happens and I feel a descriptive verb would ease the pain .

Clumsy? Maladroit?

Sistanotcista · 02/05/2022 17:35

Totally agree, Peridito. I’m not aware of a succinct verb that would do the trick, but I agree with you that there is a need for this!

BlueRaincoat1 · 02/05/2022 17:35

Hmm, kind of like a brain fart but physical 😂. There should be a word, not sure if there is...

OopNorfDahnSarf · 02/05/2022 17:38

Misalignment

OstrichFeathers · 02/05/2022 17:51

Oh, you should ask Susie Dent in twitter!

peridito · 02/05/2022 19:47

And it's even worse when it happens twice in succession..

The Germans probably have a compound word for it.

The Germans probably have a compound word for it.

Ha. Came here to say EXACTLY this.

ldontWanna · 02/05/2022 19:53

Blunder?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 02/05/2022 19:53

Butter fingers?

FIZZYTEDDY · 02/05/2022 19:54

I have a gas hob and the little metal plates on the rings are loose (they're supposed to be) and when they fall off when I clean said hob - which is majority of the time, it instills a completely unjustified anger in me 😂😂😂😂

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 02/05/2022 19:59

Terry Pratchett coined the word embuggerance to describe his Alzheimer’s disease - might it be the right word for these small annoyances too?

peridito · 02/05/2022 21:37

SDTG yes I like that ,it will do for me !

OP posts:
butterpuffed · 02/05/2022 23:14

Faux pas ?

AfterSchoolWorry · 02/05/2022 23:19

embuggerance

What a brilliant word!

So perfectly descriptive!

Stichintime · 02/05/2022 23:22

Minor fuckup, mis alignment, mini mishap?

Kite22 · 02/05/2022 23:22

*embuggerance *is an excellent word!

Kite22 · 02/05/2022 23:25

I want a word for when things are aimed at adults rather than dc, but aren't ...ahem "adult content"

so if you are talking about TV programmes or books or films or whatever that aren't really 'family entertainment' and are aimed at adults - maybe an investigative programme such as Panorama, or a thriller, - rather than the adult content you might find in an Ann Summers shop or a porn channel.

TottersBlankly · 02/05/2022 23:43

‘For a mature audience’? No. ‘For a discerning audience’? No. I’m sure there is a word.

Both maladroit and faux pas mean dropping the salt socially, not physically, surely? My first thought was clumsy - but that focusses on the person rather than the non-compliant objects.

Dilbertian · 03/05/2022 00:16

Cackhanded.

But that implies clumsy, whereas maybe it wasn't you being clumsy or awkward or whatever that caused the mismatch between your actions and their target.

In that case, let's call it cockhanded
I mean, if you had cocks for hands they would probably fuck up basic every day tasks

Maflingo · 03/05/2022 01:42

We refer to having “dickfingers” in our house!!

peridito · 03/05/2022 09:07

TottersBlankly is spot on saying but that focuses on the person rather than the non-compliant objects.

The annoyance comes from the fact that you are carrying out a small ,straightforward ( almost automatic ) action that you have performed a million times and out of the blue it goes wrong .

Of course it probably does arise from flaw in how the action is being carried out ,but it's impercitable to the person in question .

OP posts:
TalesOfDrunkennessAndCruelty · 03/05/2022 10:20

In that case, are you talking about the innate hostility of inanimate objects?

peridito · 03/05/2022 16:07

Interesting thought Tales ,but it's more the act ,the failing of an insignificant and normally successful movement .
