Saying haitch.

I almost never hear anyone saying aitch anymore. It's so infuriating! There is no such word as haitch. Am I alone in feeling so irritated? 😕

No I feel your pain.

EmbarrassingMama · 12/09/2021 19:48

Agreed.

thatonesmine · 12/09/2021 19:50

I hate it too, and actually had someone correct me once when I was spelling my name over the phone. I said aitch and she said "you mean haitch?"

QueenFreesia2021 · 12/09/2021 19:52

Agree!! I am in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 And most people see aitch. But DD1 said haitch 🙄 WTAF?!

Is it school or YouTube that’s got her saying it

Swifey40 · 12/09/2021 19:53

It's sooooo common and makes my teeth itch!! My ds teacher for year 3 made them say haitch and I complained!!!

MrsGface · 12/09/2021 19:55

Haitch is the standard pronunciation in Hiberno English. It’s not incorrect, it’s just different.

Chunkymenrock · 12/09/2021 19:55

I'm so glad I'm not alone. I even had to turn Radio 4 off this week because no one could say aitch and I could take it no longer.

I hate it but accept it.

However, I had to ring HMRC about inheitance tax the other day and the recorded voice kept saying I-Haitch-T. It must have taken so much more effort.

ListeriaWane · 12/09/2021 20:00

There is no such word as haitch

There’s also so such word as “aitch”. Or “eff”, or “double-you”, or “zed”, for that matter.

DrWankincense · 12/09/2021 20:02

It is haitch! Hhhhhhhh? What is aitch? It's like a posh itch!
(But I'm Scottish and pronounce everything wrong)

Garriet · 12/09/2021 20:05

You are not alone!

Honks · 12/09/2021 20:07

Agree agree agree
It’s aitch!!!

GemmaRuby · 12/09/2021 20:09

I hate it.

Dilbertian · 12/09/2021 20:09

Of course aitch is a word! It's the name of the letter between gee and eye.

I was always taught that haitch was wrong I think that might have been North London middle class snobbery.

I think haitching has increased because h is the only letter that does not have its sound in its name, so teachers are using haitch to include the sound.

WaitinginVain · 12/09/2021 20:10

It grates on my nerves and seems to be everywhere.

DC say it all the time and heard their teachers do the same in home learning.

ParishSpinster · 12/09/2021 20:17

Always thought it was haitch.

I had a maths teacher who said "hitch" for h. Which wasn't actually that uncommon. But I'm in Scotland. We do things properly differently to England here.

It is NOT haitch! Knock the 'h' off the beginning when you say it! Grin

Keeps me awake at night, I haven’t thought of anything else for years.

It was particularly tough dealing with Line of Duty and all the hype surrounding it. I coped and feel stronger for it.

I have a friend with 3 degrees and a Masters who's doing a PHD at the moment. All 3 of her degrees are firsts and one is in linguistics. She says "haitch".

I was brought up to believe haitch was ungodly and I absolutely hate it but I do think it's one of those we need to accept is now a thing.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 12/09/2021 20:26

Can't get worked up about this one.

Saying the h in aitch is traditional in some Afro Caribbean communities and has probably rubbed off on others. There are also people who say the h in other non-H words. I feel it's a bit racist to object to it.

Haitch and aitch was a Catholic/Prod signifier when I was growing up (and obviously spoken of with horror that one might use a signifier for The Other Lot.

So these days I treat it with decent respect for regional/cultural difference rather than coming over all swoony about it as my grandmother would have done.
