Scrabulous dictionaries - written by the illiterate

I'm a massive Scrabulous fan (when it works!)

Unfortunately both of the dictionaries are bizarre. For example, I tried the word 'via' - not allowed. However, today, in the space of three moves I was allowed to include the word 'fuck', later extended to 'fucker' and then added the word 'mother' on the front assuming that this was not possible. But yes, indeed it is (and is quite valuable in terms of points).

You can also have 'spiv', 'eh', 'homey' and even 'homeys'.

But can you have 'felch'?

No of course not.

Gah!

(yes, I know I need to get out more)

know exactly what you mean!

LadyOfWaffle · 06/11/2007 20:20

Maybe it's american?

TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsBoecoe · 06/11/2007 20:22

Someone i was playing with was allowed twat, and yet i wasn't allowed quim!

WendyWeber · 06/11/2007 20:32

Boco, is that you?

You can have quim, if you use the right dictionary (sowpods maybe)

There was a jolly interesting word on hangman the other day:

PHILANTROPHIC

is this growing people in water?

WendyWeber · 06/11/2007 20:35

Anyway the worst thing about Scrabulous is the way it insists on giving you a tray full of vowels - as someone I was playing (before I gave up in disgust) pointed out, the only word you can get with AIEEOOU is an onomatopoeic one which is prob not in either dictionary

TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsBoecoe · 06/11/2007 20:38

Maybe i was on the wrong dictionary, because it said no to quim. And ipod. Is ipod a brand or a thing?

Tutter · 06/11/2007 20:39

it let me have ZOOEY the other day

i only tried it for a laugh

Tutter · 06/11/2007 20:40

i would say ipod is not yet acceptable, as hoover would be for example

Tutter · 06/11/2007 20:40

i have used QUIM

Tutter · 06/11/2007 20:41

and MINGE

you need sowpods

WendyWeber · 06/11/2007 20:42

(Why are you in disguise, dearheart?)

Califrau posted somewhere an image of a game she was playing which included not only quim but a host of other rude words too

TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsBoecoe · 06/11/2007 20:49

Out of the context of this thread, 'i have used QUIM' looks like quite a shocking revelation.

I'm not terribly good at disguises. Someone from real life , a family member, spotted me and read posts, and i knew she knew who i was, but didn't realise she reads what i write.

Tutter · 06/11/2007 20:50

pmsl boco

WendyWeber · 06/11/2007 20:50

Oh no! I'm sorry I used your name then, shall I get that post deleted?

TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsBoecoe · 06/11/2007 20:51

Oh no it's fine, really, i'm just kidding myself that dressed up as Prince no one will realise it's me.

Tutter · 06/11/2007 20:51

oops, me too

doh

MrsJohnCusack · 06/11/2007 21:11

yes you can have quim
and I have had via
but the TWL dictionary is shite

MrsJohnCusack · 06/11/2007 21:29

it let me have ebaying

which is a nonsense really

mindalina · 06/11/2007 21:31

There are two types of Scrabulous game aren't there? One where all words are checked against a dictionary and one where all words are allowed unless you or your opponent challenge it. I should imagine that's why you can have ebaying, which is clearly not a word.

I used quim while playing with tutter just the other day
in my defence, she had used a whole RAFT of appallingly smutty words in the previous game

twere very amusing though

TheArtistFormerlyKnownAsBoecoe · 06/11/2007 21:54

snigger at 'I used quim while playing with tutter just the other day'.

mintydixcharrington · 06/11/2007 22:00
Grin
MrsJohnCusack · 06/11/2007 22:21

nope
ebaying was in SOWPODS

cali we have the Chambers dictionary. they do a 'special' scrabble one I think but the normal Chambers one is more or less the same and usually cheaper

minty probably thinks I don't know any words as I was so unutterably crap in my game against her. such dreary letters

whomovedmychocolate · 06/11/2007 22:56

You can look up the words by hitting 'practice mode' then 'dictionary help' then 'look up words' CalifraundingFathers but it's not available for download AFAIK.

I didn't understand the challenge game type for ages and so lost lots of games to a guy from the philippines who was making up random letters into 'words' and I didn't know they were just being accepted because I didn't challenge them .

What irks me though (and this is probably just me), is that I appear to get the same set of tiles again and again. I've got a frighteningly good memory for images and a couple of times I've looked at my letters and thought - 'I had that exact letter set in another game I'm on six moves ago' but of course at that point the system fails and I'm kicked out, unable to prove it.

However I remain deeply suspicious.

Especially as my SiL has beaten me three times and appears to have nabbed every letter worth over two points on the board at times .
