Word of the Day - let's add 100 words to our vocabulary

MariaWaria · 31/12/2017 20:29

This thread follows on from my recent thread on AIBU saying that I wanted to add 100 words to my vocabulary. The response was incredible; so much encouragement given, and ideas shared.
And AdaColeman suggested I start a Word of the Day thread, so here we are.

The way this will work is that I will post the Word of the Day (each day Smile) and state its meaning as I understand it which will no doubt have been gleaned from Google, books, wherever.

The aim is not to teach or preach or offer words that ordinary folk, like me, are not likely to use in general conversation. They will be words that we may already have heard of but have not felt assured enough to use in conversation.

Perhaps we can aim to use the Word of the Day three times in our conversation in the next 24 hours and report on how that went.

Let’s see how this thread develops. My aim is to continue for 100 days by which time I (and hopefully you too) will have an extra 100 words in your vocabulary.

The first Word of the Day is INIMITABLE meaning incapable of being copied, in a class of its own.

I have no idea what's going on, I'm completely oblivious even though I've just read the thread.

I could post that on most threads, but I think it fits here best Grin

listsandbudgets · 17/01/2018 14:05

I wish I was oblivious to the petulant behaviour of certain members of my family

MariaWaria · 17/01/2018 21:32

Word of the Day No. 18 is FEIGN - to pretend; to put on a show of.

She tried to feign innocence, yet everyone knew she had eaten the cup cake.

Just found this thread and love it. It has kept me amused whilst I am feigning interest in the football.

Look forward to checking in for tomorrows word Smile

misstiggiwinkle · 17/01/2018 22:19

Love this thread!

AdaColeman · 17/01/2018 23:50

Do join in then misstiggiwinkle ! Smile

Verilyfrankinscensed · 18/01/2018 06:33

I didn't need to feign oblivion to my children's riotous behaviour, I was indeed oblivious, and the disorder was left to others to quell.

listsandbudgets · 18/01/2018 12:35

I am currently having to deal with the landlord of a neighbouring property over an issue that is impacting ours. Their petulant behaviour and the bunkum they keep feeding me is leaving me feeling rather pugnacious. I have reached the stage whereby I am forced to feign politeness.

(this is actually true)

listsandbudgets · 18/01/2018 12:45

Indeed, I am very inclined to send the following email

Dear next door landlord

Please stop feeding me bunkum and feigning ignorance. You are perfectly well aware that this matter is a statutory nuisance under the environmental act 1990 despite your seemingly petualent attitude towards said act. Perhaps a more punctilious study of the relevant sections would clarify your view on the matter?

Perhaps we can resolve this matter without resorting to further pugnacious behaviour on your part. Your current behaviour may even be said to be akin to turpitude.

I do look forward to hearing from you. I am sure there are a myriad of ways in which the problem could be fixed. Perhaps employing someone with an empirical knowledge of the matter at hand (i.e. an electrician) may assist you in preventing me commencing further action.

Best regards

Oh I am enjoying this thread - its really helping me release some angst

AdaColeman · 18/01/2018 13:13

Gosh listsandbudgets that seems to be a dreadful situation for you. You will need to quell your irritation and feign a calm manner in order to deal with the landlord. How dare he claim to be oblivious to the problem!
You need Brew and Cake !

Well, unfortunately all the lovely posters from this thread must be feeling laconic. I wish they were feeling skittish instead, I could do with a bit of frivolity today!

StripySocksAndDocs · 20/01/2018 19:46

😂

iklboo · 20/01/2018 21:01

I have a nasty tummy bug
It really is quite chronic
I'd love to feign some skittishness
But I'm just feeling laconic

Word of the Day No. 22 is LUGUBRIOUS - looking or sounding sad and dismal Sad

:en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/lugubrious

OP posts:
iklboo · 21/01/2018 20:20

Morrissey songs always sounds lugubrious.

Verilyfrankinscensed · 22/01/2018 07:58

Oh I thought laconic meant almost the opposite, drawn out and lazy.

Lugubrious is a lovely word. So mournful sounding.

steppemum · 22/01/2018 08:23

Oh just found this thread.
I know most of the words, but rarely use them, so that is a challenge I will take up!

I also thought laconic meant long drawn out speech Shock

steppemum · 22/01/2018 09:17

Oh just seen limerance used on another thread, and I had to look up the meaning!
great word

KikiMadeMeDoIt · 22/01/2018 11:40

I wonder why so many of us had the wrong definition of laconic. I will get my retribution on whoever is promulgating this misinformation.
