Word of the Day - let's add 100 words to our vocabulary

MariaWaria · 31/12/2017 20:29

This thread follows on from my recent thread on AIBU saying that I wanted to add 100 words to my vocabulary. The response was incredible; so much encouragement given, and ideas shared.
And AdaColeman suggested I start a Word of the Day thread, so here we are.

The way this will work is that I will post the Word of the Day (each day Smile) and state its meaning as I understand it which will no doubt have been gleaned from Google, books, wherever.

The aim is not to teach or preach or offer words that ordinary folk, like me, are not likely to use in general conversation. They will be words that we may already have heard of but have not felt assured enough to use in conversation.

Perhaps we can aim to use the Word of the Day three times in our conversation in the next 24 hours and report on how that went.

Let’s see how this thread develops. My aim is to continue for 100 days by which time I (and hopefully you too) will have an extra 100 words in your vocabulary.

The first Word of the Day is INIMITABLE meaning incapable of being copied, in a class of its own.

Looking forward to tomorrow Smile

Ontopofthesunset · 01/01/2018 21:13

I used to refer to my schoolfriend's mother as "the inimitable Evelyn". She was quite something.

MariaWaria · 01/01/2018 21:14

A great start to our new thread.

Word of the Day No.2 is PUGNACIOUS - ready for a fight; inclined to be affronted and throw the first punch; belligerent.

@LaContessaDiPlump what a lovely quotation. T.S. Eliot has an inimitable style.

By the way ‘inimitable’ is Red’s word of the day in an episode of Orange is The New Black.

MrsPestilence · 01/01/2018 21:23

A certain pugnacious president on your mind Maria?

New York Times
Relentlessly pugnacious, energised by a fight, unwilling to let any slight go unanswered, Mr. Trump has made himself America’s apostle of anger, its deacon of divisiveness.

Eppia · 01/01/2018 21:29

If you like Lord of the Rings, this extract contains the word ‘inimitable’:

“[Hobbits] possessed from the first the art of disappearing swiftly and silently, when large folk whom they do not wish to meet come blundering by; and this art they have developed until to Men it may seem magical. But Hobbits have never, in fact, studied magic of any kind, and their elusiveness is due solely to a professional skill that heredity and practice, and a close friendship with the earth, have rendered inimitable by bigger and clumsier races.”

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/01/2018 21:33

My parents hosted a new year's family get together in their own inimitable fashion, then my pugnacious sister reverted to her teenage attitude.

Both words used in my description of my day. I like this thread; I love words! I shall use these words in my lessons, the kids will love it they won't, they hate it when I use new words because I teach maths not English

MumGoneMild · 01/01/2018 21:36

Love pugnacious
Will worm it into a rant next time my kids fight

chocolateworshipper · 01/01/2018 21:41

I don't know if we're allowed to suggest a word of the day, but one of my favourite words that I rarely hear is lackadaisical - which means carelessly lazy or lacking enthusiasm and determination.

meltingsugar · 01/01/2018 21:49

LOVE this thread. Placemarking.

Hello Maria (and all the inimitable 'Wordies' on this thread Smile. Wordies are a collection of people wanting to improve their use of words - I just made that up!

First day back at work after 10 days off - I hope my boss won't be in pugnacious mood on my first day back. I'd rather he was in ebullient mood.

MariaWaria · 01/01/2018 22:17

This is a very good start to the new year. Thank you all for bringing this thread to life.

Brilliant thread, and unique. I would even go as far as to say that it's inimitable!

Did I spell it right...?

Whyhellodaffodil · 01/01/2018 22:23

Love this thread, and love words - will definitely be following. I’m also someone who learns words by reading, and only realise I’ve never heard the word outloud before when I use it and get it wrong!

Lovelilies · 01/01/2018 22:25

My 12 year old is incredibly pugnacious, I'm not sure whether it's the Asperger's or hormones Confused

Whyhellodaffodil · 01/01/2018 22:29

The word pugnacious always makes me think of Winston Churchill

hangingkebab · 01/01/2018 22:35

Oh I like this thread! I'm only commenting so that I don't forget about it...nobody get pugnacious, 'kay?

Verilyfrankinscensed · 01/01/2018 23:28

Brilliant thread. Can I join in please. I used inimitable twice today. Dc telling jokes in his inimitable way, and the inimitable success of DH's lunch. Pugnacious is a great word, just hope I'm not applying it to the children tomorrow.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/01/2018 23:50

another pugnacious aspie who is not sleeping or keeping quiet in his own inimatable style...

along the lines of shouting I am being quiet....

LaContessaDiPlump · 02/01/2018 03:31

DS2 is a pugnacious little sod (as is DCat) Grin

MariaWaria · 02/01/2018 07:15

I'm finding that pugnacious trips off he tongue more easily than inimitable and seems easier to apply to those around me. Maybe that's saying something about the company I keep Shock

Place marking and I think this is a great idea.

IrisAtwood · 02/01/2018 07:36

I shall now imagine pugnacious people with the face of a pug!

Word of the Day - let's add 100 words to our vocabulary
LaContessaDiPlump · 02/01/2018 07:42

Pugnacious is similar to bellicose - meaning 'demonstrating aggression and willingness to fight'.

FaithEverPresent · 02/01/2018 07:45

Ooh I love this idea! I think ‘pugnacious’ will be rolling round my head all day. Autocorrect also suggested ‘pugnacity’ - ‘Pugnacity, or a natural disposition to be aggressive or belligerent’. I suppose one could say the US President has an element of pugnacity about him.
