Haitch

I seem to hear this more and more. There's no such word as haitch. The eighth letter of the alphabet is called 'aitch'. It's not a question of region or opinion, it's just wrong. Aitch is in dictionaries. Haitch isn't.

Some people in Edinburgh and other bits of Scotland pronounce "J" ("jay") to rhyme with "eye".

J to rhyme with eye is so funny Grin
I'm saying it aloud and I sound like someone from eastenders or Australian. Accents are brilliant!

Jye Very common in Scotland

squoosh · 31/05/2017 17:33

j-eye and poe-ee-um (for poem) are the Scottish pronunciations that make me laugh.

squoosh · 31/05/2017 17:34

I've never picked up on any differences in the way 'fair' is pronounced.

Maudlinmaud · 31/05/2017 17:41

I have to say the Scottish accents are beyond me. I do try to practice them but I'm afraid they have defeated me. I had to recite lochinvar once and made a bloody mess of it.

Am I the only pedant for whom even the sight of "Haitch" makes me shudder? Grin

bigmack · 31/05/2017 18:07

Should haitch start with a capital letter?

Radishal · 31/05/2017 18:19

Oh no! Don't mess with me any more!
