They start them to feel superior about how clever they are, compared to the poor sod who doesn't know the difference.
Think about it for a minute, you're one of the people who writes "could of" (for example) You're not writing "could of" to wind clever people on MN up, are you? You're doing it because, for whatever reason, you think it's correct.
And then you open the nth Groundhog Day thread on MN saying "Hee haw, hee haw, if I see one more "could of" I'll simply explode, thicko illiterates, do schools teach the plebs nothing these days?"
That OP is then followed by the inevitable 7,000 people who think they are genuinely being original by hee-hawing about "Chester Drawers".
It's just tiring and unpleasant, really.
But if anyone is genuinely interested in language, and its nuances, and why "less" is OK in Tesco, then do come and join us in PC. Just don't imagine you'll get any supporters from regulars over there when you start to take the piss out of people who may not be as "clever" as you are.
