The new word for big is massive, apparently. Is it just me or has its over-usage began to rankle anyone else?

I realise I'm turning into a massive stuck record ;) but the word very has been replaced by super, and I missed a memo.
Also why has everyone started saying "be like" instead of "says"?

Kidnapped · 25/04/2016 14:42

I have noticed super a lot recently.

Everything is super-fun, people are super-nice, and that fella running the marathon was super-quick.

AppleSetsSail · 25/04/2016 14:43

Yes to all.

Is there an old lady shaking her fist emoticon?

StealthPolarBear · 25/04/2016 14:43

AppleSetsSail · 25/04/2016 14:43

Massively elitist.

Oh I am super sorry

Kidnapped · 25/04/2016 14:53

I see a lot on here:

"My friend bought a dog. Flash forward 2 weeks and... "

or

"My husband took up skydiving. Fast forward a year and... "

Rather than just saying "2 weeks later...." or "A year later...."

StealthPolarBear · 25/04/2016 14:55

Oh yes fast forward. I've noticed that. Those long ops usually start "so..."

ApocalypseSlough · 25/04/2016 14:56

That was indeed brilliant, Stealth. Today you win the internet.

StealthPolarBear · 25/04/2016 15:02

What a massive honour. I'd like to thank my rock.

StealthPolarBear · 25/04/2016 15:03

" my rock" is probably a decade out of datem

AppleSetsSail · 25/04/2016 15:08

What is this 'rock', anyway?

Yes, it is like they think they are writing a screenplay.

StealthPolarBear · 25/04/2016 15:59

Which some of them are

KoalaDownUnder · 25/04/2016 16:02

I'm so glad somebody else noticed 'massively'.

It is used for EVERYTHING on mumsnet.

Just that, really. Grin

absolutelynotfabulous · 25/04/2016 16:09

On the point of "massive" does it have another meaning in a medical context?

My father died of a heart attack, suddenly. When asked, my mother would say "oh, he had a MASSIVE heart attack. Why massive? Why not just....a heart attack, or a fatal heart attack?

Anyone else come across this?

It could be a Welsh thing..

AppleSetsSail · 25/04/2016 16:24

I think 'massive heart attack' is one of the few proper uses of the word. Sorry absolutely

I have found that people who abuse 'massive' tend to be the ones who think 'literally' is meant to be used for emphasis.

He was probably "rushed" into hospital as well, absolutely, rather than just taken.

AppleSetsSail · 25/04/2016 18:02

Next up: is anyone interested in reclaiming the word 'organic'?

OP posts:
SuburbanRhonda · 25/04/2016 19:40

Or the use of the phrase "Next up", when "Next" will do Grin

StealthPolarBear · 25/04/2016 21:44

Or "right here" being used in a completely poitless way. Jillian Michaels is bad for this "one minute push ups right here"
Oh ok. I was going to go and do them in the kitchen.
