It's CLIQUE not CLICK!

"all the mum's at the school gate are really clicky and never talk to meeee..." Argh. Just...no. It is ALWAYS in a whiny post too. Bothers me far beyond any rational response. I get ANGRY about this. I need to get a grip don't I? or someone lovely could reassure me that it isn't just me? What gets to you?

The apostrophe in "mum's" bothers me more.

MrsD14 · 08/04/2016 22:39

and yes, I do realise that there's a misplaced apostrophe. There always is...

I hate the way many Americans pronounce the word "nuclear". It's new-clear not new-cue-lar.

Czerny88 · 09/04/2016 17:44

And it's "lose", not "loose", unless you mean the opposite of "tight".

Topseyt · 09/04/2016 17:47

All of the above, plus would of, could of etc.

DaphneWhitethigh · 09/04/2016 17:50

It's "cue" not "que". Or sometimes it should be "queue". But it's never "que" unless you are Spanish or quoting Fawlty Towers.

SenecaFalls · 09/04/2016 17:56

It's new-clear not new-cue-lar.

If you are going to lecture Americans, you should at least use the proper American pronunciation. It's new-cle-ar (with the final "r" pronounced, of course), not new-clear.

jimpam · 09/04/2016 17:56

Oooh I am glad to see this, I always thought it was clique but keep seeing "click" & thought I was wrong. Is it pronounced like click or cleek? I use the latter, I hope that is right Confused

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 09/04/2016 17:59

It is also being not been: They are been really mean to me..

Just No!!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/04/2016 18:00

It's pronounced cleek but you may find that when you say it like that the majority of people look at you like YOU'RE wrong. This is how language changes happen, I suppose. Mispronunciations gradually become the accepted form of the word.

Groovee · 09/04/2016 18:02

Whenever I hear click it makes me think of people going to dances and meeting someone they click with.

jimpam · 09/04/2016 18:06

Glad I am saying it correctly Curly. My pet hate is "should/would of" instead of "should/would have".

Abraid2 · 09/04/2016 18:09

And it is reins, rather than reigns, as in tightness of.

Drawers, not draws.

CorkyBark · 09/04/2016 18:10

I've finally found my spiritual home on Mumsnet!

LumelaMme · 09/04/2016 18:36

Free reign.
NOOOOOO!

RomComPhooey · 09/04/2016 18:39

I saw "per say" earlier today on a thread. Made my pedant tic twitch.

Czerny88 · 09/04/2016 19:07

To all intents and purposes. Not "intense" or "incense" or "pretence" or something else that sounds vaguely similar. Do people not read these days??!

JosiePye · 09/04/2016 19:09

I hate it when people say they aren't "phased" by something. It's fazed, not phased.

JosiePye · 09/04/2016 19:11

Ooh and saying "I just text x, y,z" instead of " I just texted...."

Footle · 09/04/2016 19:33

I raise you the pretend crossing out as in OP above.

DaphneWhitethigh · 09/04/2016 19:46

But that's not an error Footle. It may be an effect you do not find amusing, but it is the effect the OP intended.

eternalopt · 09/04/2016 19:50

The fact that the word "literally" is used incorrectly so often that the incorrect version now appears in the Oxford English Dictionary as it's colloquial definition. AngryAngryAngry

Gwenhwyfar · 09/04/2016 19:53

Click for clique is part of the dialect here in Cardiff. I'm from north Wales so it was something I had to learn when I arrived. It's not standard, but not a mistake either.
