AIBU to think that it's really not that hard to learn the difference between bored and board?? Hmm

lose and loose.

It's not that fucking difficult.

Honeydragon · 23/02/2012 13:08

My Local fb has a sales page - I have to step 3 smart paces away from the lap top and slam my hand in a drawer to stop my self typing when some one types expect instead of accept. Grammar and punctuation don't normally wind me up but that does for some reason.

Oh, and whilst we're talking about FB For Sale pages - if I see 'I have xxx for sell' one more time I will eat my own head.

flibbertywidget · 23/02/2012 13:15

sarahstratton - lose and loose - make me go purple with rage

effect/affect - GRRRRRR

sleepychunky · 23/02/2012 13:17

I have just received an email from a very well-known and highly regarded grantmaking body (I work in charity fundraising) asking me to "except our apologies" for the wrong link they had sent in an earlier message. I wonder if they fund literacy projects....????

I will put my hand up and admit to struggling with practise and practice. If anyone has a pet way of remembering, I would love to knowit.

SarahStratton · 23/02/2012 13:34
  • know it.
peeriebear · 23/02/2012 13:36

Rest bite instead of respite!!

TuftyFinch · 23/02/2012 13:38

Sarah you go to C the doctor. Doctor's practice. Practice is a noun. Practise is a verb. Tennis practise. Like license and licence.

Lueji · 23/02/2012 13:39

Your being unreasonable.

Wink
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/02/2012 13:40

its "tennis practiCE" isn't it?

TuftyFinch · 23/02/2012 13:41

Sorry that was an example of me being wrong.
I am going to practise my tennis. (verb)
I am going to tennis practice. (noun)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/02/2012 13:42

yes, i thought it was a deliberate mistake there WinkGrin

TuftyFinch · 23/02/2012 13:43

X post fanjo. As soon as I sent it I was 'oh bollocks'.

maddening · 23/02/2012 13:45

"what music can you here" was emblazoned on the wall of the local surestart centre

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/02/2012 13:47

you'd better go and lend a dictionary from someone Wink

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/02/2012 13:47

yes "borrow" and "lend" confusion gets to me!

whiskyplease · 23/02/2012 13:56

Nearly everyone on radio and TV now uses "wandering" and "wondering" as if they are interchangeable. Drives me nuts.

KatMumsnet · 23/02/2012 13:58

Hi, we've moved this into Pedants' Corner now.

Housemum · 23/02/2012 14:03

TuftyFinch · 23/02/2012 14:13

I am not a pedant though.
I teach adults who have never been to school. Homophones are tricky when you have low levels of literacy. But your/ you're in adults with high functional literacy skills annoys me. Quite a lot.

Hullygully · 23/02/2012 14:15

A lot of the teachers at my dc's school say "haitch" for "aitch." The dear dc correct them, how they must enjoy it.
