...said by me to DS this evening.

DP overheard and says, "No, it isn't? It's nearly two weeks away"

Me:"Errrm Hmm Well it's not 'this' Saturday is it?"

DP: "No, because this Saturday is 'next Saturday' Christmas Day is on 'the' next Saturday"

Me: "Fine, I'll start a thread..."

Grin

Please, I know I'm right, aren't I?

And I know I am, I'm only really posting this so I can get some back up and show him the thread

Woah - the week can not run from Sunday to Saturday FunnysInTheGarden because Sunday is part of the weekEND. Grin Therefore the week begins on a Monday.

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 14/12/2010 19:14

I'm with the OP, but obviously those of us who are correct will need to clarify our language usage going forward. Xmas Wink

kickassangel · 14/12/2010 20:28

when i said the 11th, i meant the 18th - sorry, got caught up in all the 2011s.

viva - a full week (not just week days ) runs from sun to sat. that is cos the week starts on sunday, to commemorate the lord's rising from the dead, on a sunday, so it comes first to be the most important.

of course, if you're jewish, it starts at a totally different time & day altogether. i have no idea about other religions (or even different 'types' of christianity) & how they count days, weeks etc. but i know that they all vary.

i do know that octoberfest is in september though.

hocuspontas · 14/12/2010 20:42

Agree with Val. Next Saturday is Christmas Day. It does prove though how specific you have to be sometimes!

Next Saturday is the Saturday of next week.

This Saturday is the Saturday of this week.

Last Saturday is the Saturday of last week.

If you are on the Saturday, then you are talking about days in relation to the one you're on - so Next Saturday is the next one you come to, and last Saturday was the last one you had - obviously This Saturday will be today.

there's nothing wrong with calling Christmas NExt Saturday if it makes seem more exciting and interesting, and This Saturday is tomorrow.

your DH is wrong.

nickeldonkeycarrymary · 17/12/2010 12:57

oh, and Sunday is the first day of the week.

That's IMMOVABLE.

bisybackson · 17/12/2010 16:49

But nickel - how can Sunday be the first day of the week? I mean 'on the seventh day God rested' and all that. It can't be the seventh day and the first day or we'd all be ridiculously confused.

And we'd all have to start hating Sundays which just doesn't seem right somehow.

PS I'm not especially religious or anything - I just had a solid CofE education.

nickeldonkeycarrymary · 18/12/2010 13:08

because it is.

The seventh day actually refers to Saturday - Jews celebrate the sabbath (7th day) from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday - therefore comfirming that Saturday is the Sabbath.
and that makes it the last day of the week.
So Sunday, when we go to church, is actually the 1st day of the week.
(only made day of rest arbitrarily)

bisybackson · 18/12/2010 14:03

Oh! Xmas Grin

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 18/12/2010 14:05

So now it's Saturday, is Christmas still on next Saturday?

Or just on Saturday?

Valpollicella · 18/12/2010 14:06

Next Saturday!

OP posts:
nickeldonkeycarrymary · 18/12/2010 14:09

(tomorrow it will be "this saturday")

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 18/12/2010 14:23

Or "on Saturday" presumably. Xmas Grin
