...said by me to DS this evening.

DP overheard and says, "No, it isn't? It's nearly two weeks away"

Me:"Errrm Hmm Well it's not 'this' Saturday is it?"

DP: "No, because this Saturday is 'next Saturday' Christmas Day is on 'the' next Saturday"

Me: "Fine, I'll start a thread..."

Grin

Please, I know I'm right, aren't I?

And I know I am, I'm only really posting this so I can get some back up and show him the thread

Next week Saturday? Hmm orrrrrrrrr...Christmas Day is on the 25th! Grin sorry.

tethersjinglebellend · 13/12/2010 22:49

Christ on a bike, what is it about pedants' corner which does this to me? I never mix up your/you're. NEVER.

Apart from here and now.

The shame.

Hassledge · 13/12/2010 22:49

Tethers - it was you! I was going to post "Witty festive namechange wasn't me, it was X" but couldn't remember who X was, because I have the retentive memory of a hamster. So I've trawled through Advanced Search and it was you! Thank you - it will be my Festive Name Change forever now. I feel like you've given me a present.

FunnysInTheGarden · 13/12/2010 22:52

ooooh tethers how embarrassing...................Anyhoo we are in the right, so it matters not!

senua · 13/12/2010 22:56

We used to have the discussion about whether it is 'this Saturday' or 'next Saturday'.
We now all refer to it as 'thisnext Saturday' to avoid arguments!

ShrinkingViolet · 13/12/2010 22:59

this Saturday is the 18th, next Saturday is the 25th, but I would probably specify "not this Saturday, the next one".

Next week starts on Monday 20th (putting next Saturday into that week).

Personally I'd never say Saturday week, but woudl take that to mean the 25th ratehr than the 18th.

DH says next Saturday would be the next one coming along until Thursday, when you would need to clarify which Saturday was meant. Obviously he is WRONG and I need to consult a solicitor immediately Wink.

melpomene · 13/12/2010 23:11

I agree with Clary and Shrinking Violet's dh.

TurkeyMartini · 13/12/2010 23:12

Those of you poorsouls who think 'next Saturday' means the next one to arrive: so if it was a Thursday, and someone said 'come round next Saturday evening' would you turn up on their doorstep the same weekend because it was the next Saturday to arrive? Is that not a bit excessively literal?

TurkeyMartini · 13/12/2010 23:15

Gah, space lost between strikeouts. WHY does everyone fuck up twice as much when composing posts on pedant threads? Is it because we are typing through the red mist of righteous pedant fury?

UnpureAsTheDrivenSHOW · 13/12/2010 23:16

I take next to mean the Saturday following this Saturday. In this context, this Saturday is the 18th and the next Saturday after that is the 25th.

So Christmas is next Saturday.

senua · 13/12/2010 23:21

SV Next week does not start on Monday 20th.
The week starts on a Sunday.

bisybackson · 13/12/2010 23:23

I love Pedants' Corner. Where else - I mean where else could you possibly find this arguement?

OP - I know what you mean but it is too early in the week for it to be unambiguous. You will confuse people.

Shodan · 13/12/2010 23:30

Dh and I are agreed.

It's next Saturday. Not this Saturday.

If someone said to you 'Do you fancy coming out for a drink on Saturday?' you'd assume it was this Saturday coming, yes? So if they then said 'Oh no, that's no good, how about next Saturday?' then you wouldn't assume it was still the same day, would you?

Anyway DH says he's Always Right so it must be true.

(And am I the only one to find that the word Saturday is starting to look really strange now?)

MorganaLeFay · 13/12/2010 23:38

[idiot]

VivaLeBeaver · 13/12/2010 23:42

Xmas is a week on Saturday. This Saturday/next Saturday are the same thing - just different ways of saying the Saturday that is coming next.

Clary · 14/12/2010 00:45

Yeah, nexters, if you say "next Saturday" on a Thursday, surely you don't mean the day after tomorrow???

ChristmasTrulyReigns · 14/12/2010 01:24
SantarissaCripslock · 14/12/2010 01:45

I think if you say next Saturday on a Thursday or Friday then it's the week and a bit later Saturday, but if it's Sunday-Wednesday then it's the very next one.

So there.

Xmas Grin
lowrib · 14/12/2010 02:49

Next Saturday happens this weekend. Next Christmas is a week on Saturday. (Do you see what I did there? Grin)

"'Do you fancy coming out for a drink on Saturday?' you'd assume it was this Saturday coming, yes? So if they then said 'Oh no, that's no good, how about next Saturday?'"

I think this example is contextual. When you say next Saturday you're comparing it to the Saturday you just spoke about.

Actually I think I agree with SantarissaCripslock.

kickassangel · 14/12/2010 03:09

i'm with op on this one.
NEXT christmas, would be christmas 2011.

i would say NEXT summer to mean summer 2011 as we aren't yet in that year. i'd say this summer to mean summer 2010 as we are in the current year.

if you want to specify the next one coming, you have to say that, otherwise, it would mean the xxday in NEXT week. so, next monday is the 20th dec., this saturday is sat 11th dec, Next sat is the one in the week following.

if you mean sat 11th, you don't need to prefix it with 'this' - that is understood, therefore the 'next' differentiates between this one & the next one after.

if you were waiting for a bus, and could see one in the distance, you might think 'i won't get this one, it's full, i'll wait for the next one'. the confusion is because we contract down phrases & sentences, if you write them out in full, you'll see what should be said.

FunnysInTheGarden · 14/12/2010 12:55

The week runs from Sunday to Saturday and so no matter when in the week you refer to 'this Saturday', it is always the one in the week you're in. So if you say 'this Saturday' on a Friday, that means tomorrow. If you say 'next Saturday' on a Friday that means a week on Saturday.

And I am always right..........

BorisTheBold · 14/12/2010 13:00

Agree with op on this.

TheNextMrsClaus · 14/12/2010 13:06

Clary, Melpomene, Violet's dh - I'm with you!! I've had many a punch-up with dh on this very subject. But then dh uses the term "this day week" to mean in a week's time, so he's hardly an authority on such things.

"Next Saturday" is far too ambiguous so early in the week. When we get to Thursday/Friday you can talk about Christmas being "Next Saturday", but not before!

Mid-week it might be acceptable to say "NEXT Saturday" with lots of emphasis to make it clear that you don't mean THIS one.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 14/12/2010 13:21

This Saturday can't be the 11th that would be 'last Saturday' ie the Saturday of last week.

I am with you and your DH is wrong.
I have always taken this and next in this context to be a shortened version in a way of this week/next week rather than the next one to arrive.

So this [weeks] Saturday is the 18th.
Next [weeks] Saturday is the 25th.

Rindercella · 14/12/2010 16:32
Xmas Blush

I stand corrected.

DD1 today asked me today when Christmas was. My reply? "It's not this Saturday, it's next Saturday.

However, I think to avoid any confusion, saying Saturday week is best.
