Old fashioned 5 year old birthday party

My DH is turning 50, and as I keep telling him he's a big kid, I'm doing a 5 year old theme birthday party for him.
What traditional party games do you think would work well for adults?
i.e. pass the parcel, any ideas for prizes etc.
Any suggestions would be great
Thanks

marbles

How embarressing!

Are you going to invite his 50 year old friends and give them a hat & spinning top?!

rainbowinthesky · 10/01/2010 11:01

Blimey, I hope your dh is okay with it. I have to say I would find it totally humiliating.

Disenchanted3 · 10/01/2010 11:03

Its awful, he will feel like a twat.

Great idea for a real 5 year old, really cute idea, but not for a 50 year old grown man!

Disenchanted3 · 10/01/2010 11:04

And if you would have mentioned in the title that this '5 year old party' is for a 50 year old you would have 50 other posts on here by now telling you what an awful idea it is!

ruddynorah · 10/01/2010 11:06

is this what he wants?

MistleSnail · 10/01/2010 11:10

Miserable bunch - the lot of you .

I think it could work really well as long as there's an adult twist i.e. booze involved in some of the games, funny prizes etc. Vodka jelly etc. I can just imagine some 50 yr olds i know going for it - silly hat, a few party poppers and cheese on a stick....

MistleSnail · 10/01/2010 11:10

Musical statues after spinning round a broom could be fun.

rainbowinthesky · 10/01/2010 11:11

Oh god, if my dh would enjoy this I'd be looking at the divorce courts tbh. shudder

Disenchanted3 · 10/01/2010 11:14

Oh come on it would be awful.

OK one or two might see the funny side but I imagine the majority would be mortified!!

MrsKitty · 10/01/2010 11:15

Presumably the 5 yo 'theme' will only extend to decor/silly games/perhaps food, rather than being an exact replica of a 5yo party - i.e. there'll be booze/good food/prizes will be more 'adult' than kids stuff? I think it's a great idea if that's the case (assuming your DH/friends/family have a similar sense of humour and will be willing to join in the fun?)

Games - pass the parcel good...perhaps musical chairs/statues?

Prizes - miniatures of spirits / posh mini chocolates / similar stuff to what you might find in posh xmas crackers

Food - could do jelly & ice-cream (perhaps the jelly could be done in individual moulds or have fruit/vodka in to make more 'grown up'

Sandwiches with nice fillings but no crusts/small triangles

Garishly coloured fairy-cakes or similar

lots of sweeties in jars (have seen this at weddings and find the adults gravitate there far more than kids do!)

Decor - lots of balloons/banners/paper tablecloths etc

MrsKitty · 10/01/2010 11:18

Mistlesnail x-post - looks like we're thinking along the same lines... (i.e. as long as there's vodka in the jelly it's all good!

QOD · 10/01/2010 11:18

I think it's a great idea! Do the proper kids party food but instead of jelly have jello shots, pass the parcel with ann summers type stuff (I had this at one of my parties LOL)
Balloons and banners and party bags - i went to a 40th last summer and got a hessian bag with some socks, a pen and some sweets OMG it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo exciting!

MrsKitty · 10/01/2010 11:19

Oh and obviously kids-style invitations

MistleSnail · 10/01/2010 11:21

Gotta have one of these

mistlesnail - that's a posh hedgehog! Shouldn't it be a potato wrapped in tinfoil, and only cheese and tinned pineapple cubes will do.

rainbowinthesky · 10/01/2010 11:27

I have a vision of a group of 50 year olds sitting in a circle dressed as children and playing party games. Shudder again.

MistleSnail · 10/01/2010 11:29

I had such a pretty party frock with Hollie Hobby on the front.....

ruddynorah · 10/01/2010 11:29

i just can not imagine a bunch of 50 yr olds sitting round playing pass the parcel! even with adult gifts. the novelty of it will wear off after the first minute surely?

TrillianAstra · 10/01/2010 11:30

This is better than a real 5yo party as you can have cheese and pineapple on sticks and sausages on sticks without worrying that someone will have their eye out!

How many people are you expecting? A full reception-class worth?

hobbgoblin10 · 10/01/2010 11:30

OLD FASHIONED PArty - great

old f ashioned 5yr old party - dire and almost fetishistic

MistleSnail · 10/01/2010 11:31

Trillian - you know the rule - as many friends as the age plus two....

ruddynorah · 10/01/2010 11:32

i think you could get away with traditional kids party food but that's about it.

juicychops · 10/01/2010 12:31

do a fancy dressed theme? kids tv characters or something?
