Hi,

Its my daughters Christening coming up and i was going to buy a big cake from Costco's but my friend is taking me next week and Costco's said their cakes have a shelf life of 3days.......The Christening is on the 26th of this month....im not able to go there a few days before.

Does anyone know anywhere that does a cake big enough for 50-60 people?? Looking for plain icing sponge cake.

On a budget as i have her birthday a few weeks after and have a party then as well.

is there no way you can get there the week of the "do"? They are very good value, even if I don't like them! (too sweet!)

FlyingLowattheMo · 06/04/2009 16:48

M&S do plain white celebration cakes, maybe you could buy some of them and some tiers?
You could either decorate them yourself or get someone to do it for you.

FlyingLowattheMo · 06/04/2009 16:50

or here is an example of what you could get

Not very christeny I suppose, but it would serve 64 people

FlyingLowattheMo · 06/04/2009 16:51

here are th eplain white ones

FioFio - Im in town tomorrow looking for a dress for the pickle, i think i will pop in any bakers along the way. Thanks

ilove - My friend has 2 kids and works p/t, it was nice she offered to take me there, i would feel cheeky asking her to take me a second time. My dad is having dd but we are taking her ds's with us. Just a shame you have to be a member

FlyingLowattheMo - I have been looking at the second one. Its on my list

I dont mean to sound cheap but that was such a good deal at Costco's and we already have the decorations for the cake. Was hoping to find something similar.

Thanks guys, im out tomorrow so will have a good look around

agree that costco cakes are excellent value and tasty too. You could always drop a hint to your friend if you don't want to ask her outright

ilove · 06/04/2009 18:10

You can get a second card for a friend I believe...you have to pay for it but I don't think it is much. Then you can go on your own?

brainache · 06/04/2009 20:27

F - We'll see what happens next week

i - No i cant see them doing that. They have probably given it to one of their parents anyway.

Hmmmmm is icing hard to do?

Might try to bake one myself
Only want a basic sponge cake......
Though saying that i dont have any bits to make a cake with so would have to buy a tin etc.....hmm ok maybe not....would probably work out more money buying the bits and ingredients rofl rofl

I talked myself out of that one quite quickly eh rofl rofl

Oh well

How about making huge pyramids of cup cakes? They're easy and can look really pretty if you decorate them... I did it once for a friend's birthday and it worked really well.

brainache · 06/04/2009 21:02

Ooooooo Cup cakes..........i can make them rofl

Can you get silver dye for icing? how can i make them Christening looking though?

OP posts:
Biccy · 06/04/2009 21:10

How about silver cup cake cases? Mix white with very pastel pink icing... and I'm just trying to think what you could decorate with...

Biccy · 06/04/2009 21:21

And I think these or something similar would look lovely? But didn't you say you'd already bought some decorations?

brainache · 06/04/2009 22:11

Yeah we have, its just little flowers etc. The shop was closed where we were going to get the center piece from. Everything happens for a reason......

Mr is not to impressed though, he thinks it will look silly and childish i think i will have a test run (but not with 50 lol) and see how it turns out

Oh.. don't you just hate it when you think you're getting somewhere and someone takes the wind out of your sails?! Before you go to all that effort maybe you could show him these or this. And look what I found to display them on!
I think it would be easier as a novice cake decorator (which I'm assuming you are!) to make cup cakes look really good, than it would be to bake and decorate a large cake - I think my attempts at pretty cupcakes would look far more pro (and therefore less childish) than if I attempted to ice a large cake. Not that I'm precious about this idea or anything!

Well, I'm off to convince DP we need to christen DD, 'cos I really fancy a go at this now!

Good luck. xx

brainache · 07/04/2009 17:32

Hi Biccy - ok well that idea is completly out with a capital O Now have Mr and my mum completly against it 'Not for a Christening, No way!'

Oh just looked at the sites and they do look lovely. Quite like the square parcel type ones also lol No chance of me being able to make them though hehehehehe

Back to the drawing board as they say

How did it go with DP? When are you having yours then.....lol Just dont do it next to a birthday - way to expencive

Biccy · 07/04/2009 20:22

Ah well, there's no accounting for taste!

Looks like ASDA do a plain iced fruit cake that is quite cheap (£13.50 for 22.5cm diameter cake).

Biccy · 07/04/2009 20:24

I know you wanted a sponge, but thought I'd post this a cheaper than the M&S cakes.

brainache · 08/04/2009 01:57

Oh thanks for that...I think i will pop over there and have a look

I didnt go out today - the weather was so nice we had a chill day Cant wait to go Christening shopping later this week

Hi
Why not buy some little cakes to give to guests to take away? www.buycake.co.uk do boxes of 16 at about £20-£30 (I think - they were a gift).
The site is run by two mums and the cupcakes are amazing..
Phew...first post over!
