i may kill myself if i have to endure another soft play party.
ehat can i do for ds 5th birthday? we had a traditional party at home last yr for 8 friends, but cant face that again and ANYWAY will be too many children. was thinking hire a hall, smallish one close to us for £4.00 per hour, but what then? try to entertain ourselves or get a man in! any sucessess out there?

Pirate party? My son says this is sure fire winner.

Littlefish · 12/01/2009 16:28

When is it?

Would the weather be good enough to take them to a nearby wood/park and do den building. In my experience, almost all 5 yr old boys like building dens.

Take the following things with you:

Garden canes
Old sheets/blankets
String
Masking tape
Scissors
Hammers
Clothes pegs

Give them a couple of rules e.g. it must be big enough for 2 people to sit in, it must have a door which can be opened etc.

If the park allows, you could take a disposable barbeque and cook sausages to go in rolls. If not, take sausages and baked beans in a flask.

I wouldn't trust my 5 year old with a hammer

sammybeth · 12/01/2009 16:29

Hire a bouncy castle to go in the hall, my dd had this for her 5th party, went down well with all the kids and you dont need to do any games. Also cheaper than hiring an entertainer.

dizzydixies · 12/01/2009 16:29

pirate party
science party at local science centre?
monsters and aliens theme
cowboy theme - thats great fun!

sports party - there is a bloke near to us who comes round and does sports with them for a price per head - knackers them out too

local theatre - ours does workshops for parties

Littlefish · 12/01/2009 16:30

I let my 3 yr olds at nursery use them! (under supervision)

Ds went to a magician party at a village hall the other week (i.e. a man in) it was a roaring success.

Bouncy castle in a village hall in another favourite with a break for musical statues and/or pass the parcel. Also set out a table with colouring sheets and pens etc.

Traditional party with games - ds was at another one like this that went down well. The party food was homemade pizza and chips cooked on the hall cooker!

My ds will be 6 this year and we are thinking about a go-kart party.

A bowling party?

Pony party? (dd has been at this and thought it was fab, trotting round a field on ponies with instructors)

I have the same problem, so will be watching this with interest.
I am currently looking at farms/ animal parks with indoor facilities, though they are 12-15 pounds per child and we want about 15! Having said that entertainers seem to cost 150-200 pounds each as well plus hall hire and food so the farm is probably cheaper and less work!

MadameCastafiore · 12/01/2009 16:39

Climbing party - one where they are strapped to a line and climb a proper climbing wall with instructors.

DS will be 5 next year and we are planning on doing this for him - he is a maniac though.

DD went to one when she was 6 and she loved it.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 12/01/2009 16:40

People seem to be shying away from bouncy castles at the moment as there have been lawsuits from parents whose children were injured

LyraSilvertongue · 12/01/2009 16:43

For the last few years we've hired a hall and an entertainer, which has always been a success.
DS1 last year took five friends to see a film then we went for a pizza afterwards, taking cake, decorations etc with us.

LyraSilvertongue · 12/01/2009 16:44

Entertainer was about £70 for an hour.

Do you have a budget?

This is a pic from my son's 5th birthday party, they had an absolute ball!

And they were kept out the house for 1 1/2 hours!

Fimbo · 12/01/2009 16:47

I think our local zoo used to come out with mini beasts for parties

IdrisTheDragon · 12/01/2009 16:48

For DS's 5th birthday (and his 4th and 3rd) we hired a hall and a bouncy castle. Had a craft table and played some games.

mustrunmore · 12/01/2009 16:49

Ds1 was 5 in November and we took a gamble on the weather... bouncy castle after school £65, hot dogs and chips all round, and popcorn. Glowstick things when it got dark £2, and a few fireworks to finish off £15.

Fimbo · 12/01/2009 16:49

Farm party? If you have a farm near you they normally do parties where they have someone to take the kids round to meet the animals, stroke them etc, maybe have tractor ride to feed the cows, then birthday lunch/tea in the barn.
