and would you be prepared to show me photos / share tips?

I found a couple of photos online but am hoping a MNer will be able to provide first hand experience.

I once did an Ice World of Hoth cake for a mate at university
just a square cake with lumps of another square cake piled on to make it lumpy, covered in instant royal icing then populated with appropriate figures...

Furball · 08/04/2008 15:50

someone - am so sorry can't remember who, but someone else might??? did a fantastic R2 d2 cake!

stealthsquiggle · 08/04/2008 15:57

Ice World of Hoth might be a bit obscure for 6yos?

I was thinking stormtrooper helmet or death star, but R2D2 is a brilliant idea.

i made this

CrackerOfNuts · 08/04/2008 15:59

There are a few here

CrackerOfNuts · 08/04/2008 15:59

You need to scroll down, and there are quite a few differnt pics.

MrsBadger · 08/04/2008 15:59

death star is dead easy but a bit dull - round grey cake with a hollow...

you can hire Darth Vader mask tins

stealthsquiggle · 08/04/2008 16:07

How about this for a standard to aspire to?

Really, Mrs B (tin hire) - where?

Southeastastra that is gorgeous but I think for 6yos I have to go for something really obvious

southeastastra · 08/04/2008 16:09

lol didn't really make it, but it's fab isn't it

Troutpout · 08/04/2008 16:15

ooh sorenlorensen made a fabby r2d2 cake for her ds's party
I think it's still on her profile

MrsBadger · 08/04/2008 16:15

cake decorating shops - try yellow pages for one near you

or only 10 dollars
also r2d2

Hassled · 08/04/2008 16:26

I did a lightsaber cake - and cheated. I bought lots of swiss rolls, found a very long plate/dish thing, glued the swiss rolls together with jam, covered one quarter (the handle of the light saber) with black icing (and I used some of those strawberry shoelace sweets for stripes/buttons etc on the handle), and covered the rest with red icing. Then I bought some of that edible glitter to make it more "glowing", IYSWIM.

There was a satisfactory amount of oohing and aahing, but it made all the kids completely hyper - e-number heaven .

stealthsquiggle · 08/04/2008 16:28

OK, thanks ladies - it is not for my DS (his b'day not until November and the theme is "secret agents", god help me) but for his friend - so I think I will offer him / his mother a choice of Darth Vader (if I can find one to hire), stormtrooper helmet or R2D2. I did see a Darth Maul one in a picture but it was not very attractive!

stealthsquiggle · 08/04/2008 16:29

or a light sabre - nice cheat, hassled

recipient's father was accidently let in on the decision - I think I am going to be making R2D2

OP posts:
ingles2 · 08/04/2008 20:47

I've made lightsabre cakes as well, really easy too.
We've got these books they're rubbish really but the pics make my ds's wet themselves with laughter.
I did make the Death Star pinata though and it was quite good.

MaureenMLove · 08/04/2008 21:05

Oooh! R2D2! Will you make one with a mould or freefall it! Can't wait to see how it turns out. My DB is a major Star Wars fan and he is 40 next year (I think) so I'll be taking notes!

Furball · 08/04/2008 21:06

the r2d2 that the mnetter made was shaped out of different cakes and lying flat iyswim.
she then iced it with different coloured icing.

stealthsquiggle · 08/04/2008 21:08

Mo I am aiming for something vaguely approximately like this

MaureenMLove · 08/04/2008 21:09

Actually, I don't think that link of yours Stealth, is too difficult. I reckon if you used gelatin icing for the leg bits, rolled quite thick, that'd be quite easy. (she says, knowing she's got a year to talk herself out of it!)

stealthsquiggle · 08/04/2008 21:10

Troutpout was right - it was sorenlorensen and it is still on her profile, but having done a standing-up monster I am confident I can get R2D2 to stand up (that is about the only bit I am confident of, mindyou!)

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 08/04/2008 21:10

x-posts! Yes, I think that's quite straight forward.

stealthsquiggle · 08/04/2008 21:11

getting sections to stick without slipping on the vertical surface is the only main bit which worries me

OP posts:
Furball · 08/04/2008 21:12

have a look at these notes when you click on them tell you how they made it

MaureenMLove · 08/04/2008 21:18

You mean on the two side bits? Can you make them the day before and leave them lying down for 24 hrs. That'll give the glue time to really set.

How do you make silver icing them?
