Do little girls still wear party dresses?

dd2 has been invited to her first ever birthday party. She's 3.9

It's been 10 years since dd1 was at a small person's party and I noticed then that often parents sent their little girls in jeans or 'normal' dresses.

So... if I send her in her party dress, will she be the odd one out and will all the other parents shun me for being horrendously old fashioned?

Mine certainly do! They absolutely love dresses and their 'special' dress and shoes in particular.

It seems to be common around this part of the country for girls to wear party dresses, because every party we've been to, people have been dressed up.

A lot of folks around here are from Glasgow and to me they seem to enjoy dressing up to go out.

I quite like it!

MamaG · 04/03/2008 12:27

Sadly Squonk, they tend to wear something "trendy" rather than a pretty dress

Sad but true.

this sort of thing

MamaG · 04/03/2008 12:28

maybe we're not posh in Cumbria

katz · 04/03/2008 12:29

here it depends on the party, disney princess dresses are often the order of the day! if it a games and te aparty then DD1 will wear her party dress if its a softplay party then i will try and coax her into some pretty trousers top combo.

The parties we have been to recently are a good mix on trend/fashion as well as some beautiful dresses, I dont think either are a problem!

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 12:30

Oh, this is not a posh place! It just seems that people enjoy dressing up for special occassions and going out. Never seen so many women traipsing around in high heels - well, outside Paris and Madrid - as I have in town centre Glasgow, and as this area has many from taht area, it's a trend that seems to have followed.

Even in DD1's nursery, many of the girls are dressed very femininely - dresses, hair up in different style, tights, girly shoes, etc.

TheFallenMadonna · 04/03/2008 12:30

At dd's party most of the girls were in party frocks (including dd).

DD has a pair of red sequnnied shoes for parties

fryalot · 04/03/2008 12:31

It doesn't say what sort of a party it is. Just "DD2 is invited to my birthday party"

It's at the little girl's house, will that make a difference to party dressiness?

Mine does she is 4. She will only wear dresses, long may it continue. Loads of the girls turned up at her party dressed as teenage Bratz. I turned up my perfectly made up nose, flicked my shiny hair and lightly rat-ta-tatted my perfectly manicured nails. I am just to good for this shabby world is what a thought and so are my beautiful dds.

I always wear party dresses too.

What is life for if it ain't for lookin perdy. eh.

MamaG · 04/03/2008 12:33

Does she have a party dress?

think at that age, a party dress will be fine

fryalot · 04/03/2008 12:34

well, MamaG... she had a party dress that her cousin passed on to her, but she was never invited to a bloody party! Now she has grown out of it.

But, purely coincidentally, we are off shopping this afternoon....

party dresses are derigeur round our way. espicially cute in winter with thermal vests showing underneath.

expatinscotland · 04/03/2008 12:36

DD1 even has her party dress already for her 5th birthday.

My mother loves all party dresses and found a beautiful one going cheap that she just couldn't resist.

DD1 can't wait to wear it to her own party!

We'll put curlers in her hair, and then glitter spray, and glitter gloss on her face.

It's a joy to have wee girls.

Today, the girls are wearing matching dresses and twirling about.

BroccoliSpears · 04/03/2008 12:36

What's the difference between a dress and a party dress?

fryalot · 04/03/2008 12:37

When I was pg with ds I did kind of want another girl so they could wear matching dresses.

Of course, I was glad when ds turned up, but...

Right, I have convinced myself. I don't care if I appear old fashioned. She is having a party dress.

A normal dress is just a normal dress.

But a party dress is special! Something you wouldn't wear every day.

fryalot · 04/03/2008 12:38

something like this would be a party dress

and this would be a dress

OP posts:
fryalot · 04/03/2008 12:39

this is perhaps a teensy bit over the top, but how cute would dd2 look in it anyway

McDreamy · 04/03/2008 12:40

We have a selection of party dresses. It is essential that MiniMcDreamy wears a party dress to any party she is invited to. Tis the done thing!

OneHandedTypist · 04/03/2008 12:40

lots of pariies at indoor play centres/other venues where party dress would get destroyed.
DD has lots og party dresses she never gets 2 wear.

MamaG · 04/03/2008 12:41

Most parties around here are at peoples' homes or village halls.

I love to see wee boys wearing party kilts to the parties!

Spaceman · 04/03/2008 12:45

DH and me took dd (3.9) to our local shopping centre in full sleeping beauty regalia and sequinned shoes on Saturday afternoon. She always wants to be dressed up to the nines as that's the type of kid she is. So I would let her go to a party as dressed up as she likes and you could guarantee it would be as a princess or her poshest frock.

I say if your daughter likes dressing up all posh, then put her in the fanciest dress you can find! Clothes these days are so cheap and pretty that it's a shame not to take advantage. Otherwise you may meet one of those nightmare parents like me who looks at the dress down children and think 'well you think mum could have made an effort for them'.

McDreamy · 04/03/2008 12:46

Just showed DD your link Squonk. She said she loved it and could I buy it!!!
