What did you buy the men in your life last birthday/Christmas?

My DH is really difficult to buy presents for, and has his birthday before Christmas so have to think twice in a short space of time. Rather than tell you anything about my DH (it probably won't help!) I thought I might generate more ideas by asking what successful presents you have bought DH/DP/even your Dad. I am looking particularly for something a little bit different. He has had cycle computer/heart rate monitor for running/wine bottle warmer &chiller/fancy cork screw/magnetic beer bottle holder/Oxfam unwrapped stuff in recent years. He's not "up" for experience voucher type gifts. Any tried and tested ideas appreciated, and am sure it will help more than me with gift ideas for difficult men-folk!

I think you are married to my DH as I have excatly the same problems.

Last year he went to a wine tasting day which he really enjoyed

FLIER · 08/10/2007 09:47

i got dh an mp3 player and an fm transmitter so he can use it in the car, think its the best pressie he's got in a long time

lilolilREALLYISFEMALE · 08/10/2007 09:52

Wine tasting sounds good, Tommy. My DH mainly just drives to work and back, very few long journeys, so sat nav/in car entertainment stuff won't get much use. But MP3 player might be an option anyway for holidays etc, flier!
Keep em coming, am sure Tommy and I aren't the only ones who will benefit from this!

We don't do presents.

I know we are odd but we don't see why we should buy each other a present just because it's a birthday or christmas.

On the other hand if there is something that either of us want then we will buy it.

To us a card is more important, but only for birthdays and christmas. NOT valetines day.

This probaly doesn't help much through.

lilolilREALLYISFEMALE · 08/10/2007 10:49

Actually, we don't go mad either Lizzie and I think your approach is a really sensible one. It's the same money at the end of the day so no point in buying for the sake of it. But nice to have a few little bits and pieces to open and looking for something different to the usual jumper/books/CDs/DVDs.

Apart from the usual cd's,dvd's, books etc I've given my chap a voucher for a floatation tank session (which he loved), I've also done a years magazine subscription.

For father's day I bought my dad tickets for a whiskey tasting; he doesn't really have male friends, I'm pregnant and mum doesn't like whiskey so I bought DP a ticket to go with him. They had a great time, arrived to meet mum and me afterwards half-plastered, laugh about it whenever they see each other and DP yesterday was saying how much easier their relationship is now - they've always got on well but not really 'known' each other IYSWIM.

We don?t do adult presents. We do silly stockings full of quirky odd things to make us smile with a "no single item worth more than a fiver" rule.
If we want something, we either just get it or save and then get it, don?t bother waiting from Christmas. See Christmas as a time to give pressies to children somehow - very dull!

lilolilREALLYISFEMALE · 08/10/2007 11:53

some great ideas, thanks! LemonTart - examples please, need stocking less than a fiver ideas too!

I just bought my dh a train set, as he's always said his only regrets about not having sons is that he can't play with trains.

Actually dds are enjoying playing with it too.

ejt1764 · 08/10/2007 11:56

My dh is a big kid, and loved this helicopter ...

casbie · 08/10/2007 12:04

his fav pressies so far have been:

2 x £5 remote control car in a tube
magazine subscription for fishkeeper's something or other
computer games like warcraft, diablo etc

would like to get a fishing trip organised for his next birthday, so we can all go too (and he can share his deep knowledge and obscure facts!!).

casbie · 08/10/2007 12:05

this year it's going to be red dwarf series on DVD!

tasja · 08/10/2007 12:09

I got DH a spanner and socket set type thing that he like. A few years back I just bought him a BBQ one day, just to give to him because I love him. He was so excited about it, never seen him so excited about another present. It is always a headache for me aswell. Hope you find something.

BroccoliSpears · 08/10/2007 12:11

The most successful present I ever bought my DP is this razor. It's really chunky and expensive feeling - heavy. He has nice shaving cream too (and a proper squirel hair brush, none of that Gilette gel stuff) and he says it really makes shaving quite a pleasure.

He used to get fed up spending so much money on "AMAZING FOUR BLADES BEST EVER" when they just cost the earth, clog really easily and wear out in a couple of shaves. And then they discontinue the blades so you have to buy a new razor and even more expensive blades.

With this one I bought him it's really cheap to buy blades for, they can't clog and he says they're far less harsh on his face.

Umm... I do not work for the razor selling company .

I usually buy something off his Amazon wishlist which has DVDs on it and books. I usually go for the box set of DVDs that I will like as well! Ha ha!

I think this year I'll do that and also get him some vouchers for a massage as he has wanted a back massage for ages (no clever remarks please!).

Gobbledispook · 08/10/2007 12:15

The year before last I got him a PS2 (but since then he got himself an XBOx 360 so I obviously didn't get the right thing!)

LucyJones · 08/10/2007 12:18

digital photo key fob looks good

ChippyMinton · 08/10/2007 12:21

DH buys stuff and gives it to me to wrap. I usually get hin a fleece or jumper or something. We tend to do big birthday presents (Laz-e-boy recliner last year, gas BBQ this year) and nothing much at xmas.

pammo · 15/10/2007 22:04

I got DH this

eidsvold · 15/10/2007 22:07

a penknife and a torch ( he had just joined the SES) and that is what he wanted along with a hydration pack.
