when I was a kid hardly anyone had birthday parties, not like today

foxinsocks · 05/03/2007 18:23

I didn't have parties and can remember not having them from about 7 onwards

poor you Califrau - didn't realise it could be so entrenched in your memory that you'd remember it in so much detail

from 7 or 8. but I've got pictures of my fourth birthday party (just family, at home). bad mother alert: mine are 4 and 2 and they've never had a "proper" birthday party. ds wants one for his 5th birthday, and I have to say, I'm dreading it>

I was three and can remember my brother's 7th (but only because my other brother pushed all the smarties through the cake!). Can remember (v. Vaguely my 5th...)

poor you califrau

I never realised it could affect people so badly. I used to drag my puking two out all the time (refluxers) - never even thought for a minute that other people would be so freaked by it.

foxinsocks · 05/03/2007 18:29

I don't mean that as a criticism. ANy phobia is awful, v debilitating.

Tamum · 05/03/2007 18:31

I can remember my 4th, which was the first one I had. And we had party bags, even though I am v. old, so ner.

I remember the twins next door to me having their 8th birthday party. It was all very lavish and beautifully organised, loads of games, wonderful food. Their mother was very strict but absolutely adored them - they were IVF babies and very very wanted, so they always really pushed the boat out for things like clothes and parties. It may well have been the most impressive children's party I had been to at tht point.

The only snag was that about ten minutes after the guests finished arriving the twins both got sent to bed (can't remember what for) and the rest of us had to just get on with the party, all the games, prizes, the food, the bloody birthday cake, all with the birthday girls howling sobs coming through the ceiling

It was awful!

Gobbledigook · 05/03/2007 18:35

I'm not sure I can remember one but I know I had at least one - we certainly didn't have them every year though. I remember my 18th - does that count?!

I really can't remember, it can't have been that awful or we would all have seen it - probably a bit of overexcited bickering or something! She was very strict. I was petrified of her

cod It's a bit like My Naughty Little Sister isn't it, where she and Bad Harry have eaten all the trifle and have to miss the party.

wurlywurly · 05/03/2007 18:40

i never had parties cos my birthday was in the summer holidays

Iota · 05/03/2007 18:41

GDG - yes my 21st was a blast

Greensleeves · 05/03/2007 18:42

cod, it was terrible, I have never forgotten it, so I can't imagine they have! We were all distraught but the parents just smiled grimly and got on with it
