Surprise 40th for dh....some ideas/advice needed

DH is 40 in November. We live in Cyprus and so a big party here is not going to happen as I think it would be too much to ask everyone to come over here (esp in Nov). He's not really into a hall 7 disco kind of party but would prefer to have his frinds together for a dinner party.

My idea is to arrange a weekend away for us and his friends in a large house somewhere in the UK. As his birthday is November and we are def coming home for a couple of weeks in July I thought I might arrange it for then. We would have better weather and it would be a huge surprise for him. Also DD starts school in Nov so it would be difficult for us to get home for a weekend in Nov apart from half term.

Do you think this is a good idea? And do you know anywhere that might be a good place to go?

I've just come back from a friend's 50th here - it was phenomenal. The Lodge at Loch Goil . You have to book it outright, and it's not cheap, but it was truly, truly wonderful. Beautiful house, incredible setting, fab' food and great service.

Looks fantastic - how many does it sleep. It is expensive and while i think people would pay it I notice they require a 50% deposit up front which might be a problem as I think DH would notice!! I am planning to invite about 20 people for 2 nights!!

English County cottages have a few that might be large enoguh depending on sleeping arrangements and they are usually quite nice.

Sleeps 18 I think. There was just 8 of us. (Price is per person, btw, minimum booking of 8.) Really was fab.
