I've said it before, but i think party bags suck, and will NOT be sending any home at dd1's party in 2 weeks time. I feel quite liberated by my decision.

would anyone like to join me in my humble protest against the party bag phenomenom?

I hate party bags and didnt have them for the first time at youngest sons party recently. Other years i had given them out (because i thought i should) and this year i felt SO much better.

It was a joint party and decision, we wrapped a piece of cake in a napkin for each child to take home, with one of the ballons.

foxtrot · 23/02/2007 13:20

Plastic party gags stuffed with plastic tat and haribos = waste of time & money, usually all gets chucked when we get home if the stuff hasn't already fallen to bits in the car.
GOING HOME PRESENTS in any other shape or form are FAB, especially like your red noses noonar . Cake and balloon is fine plus
little prizes won during the party, or something they've made or decorated, or a book, or little gift themed to the party.
Signals end of party and sends them off twice as happy.

I like the idea of party bags but hate them if they're full of horrible tat. So, for my DD's 3rd birthday I bought some cheap material and ran them up myself on the machine - each bag cost about 20p ro make. Girls will get flowery bags and boys stripey bags. My DD loves bags and hopefully the other kids will too. The contents are going to be:

  • A slice of birthday cake wrapped in a napkin (home made)
  • A noisy blow-out thing (don't know what they're called)(18 for 99p at 99p shop)
  • A roller pen that makes fancy patterns (10 for 99p from 99p shop)
  • A chocolate chick (c.10 for £2 from Lidl)

So each party bag shouldn't cost more than £1. If you shop around you CAN find decent, reasonably priced things and make really nice party bags. They don't have to be tacky.

We gave out footballs at my ds's 4th party the other day (Baker Ross - 12 for £13.95 I think). Parents happy: no tat. Kids happy: have something they'll actually play with beyond the car ride home.

handlemecarefully · 27/02/2007 14:12

My dd loves party bags - not in a grasping kind of way, but in a thrilled and excited way.

I'll be doing them...

magicmummy · 27/02/2007 14:26

Love party bags.
Tescos have just been selling off all their £1 range for 10p each, so have bought
15 x girls bead/necklace making sets for £1.50 and
15 x boys space invader type games for £1.50 - Bargain

foxtrot · 27/02/2007 14:29

gemmasmummy - please nooooooo noisy blowout thingys!! I'm guessing you have never driven home with 3 children blowing them at the same time. AAAGGGHHHH.

foxtrot · 27/02/2007 14:30

Oops, meant t say the rest of your bag sounds lovely

PandaG · 27/02/2007 14:34

DD is having a joint craft party with a friend. Each child will be decorating a photo frame during the party, and painting a glass jar to make a tealight holder, snd icing a biscuit. These will go home as the contents of the party bag, along with a slice of cake, and a photo of the party guests in the photo frame Photo frames 3 for £1.29 at Ikea, the rest cost pence to do

Housemum · 27/02/2007 14:48

I can't join in the no-party-bags bit as even at 3 they all know and expect them. But like the others, it's a no-tat bag - this year I'm giving a plastic cup (re-usable) with some bits & pieces in. Haven't decided what yet, but will be something that can be used eg notepad/pencils so it has a finite life! Am sick of plastic pop-up toys and finger monsters (sorry!). Last year I had 5 girls and found some personalised bracelets on eBay which were about 50p each - original as they had the names on, and I put a home-made cookie in each bag with the child's name on too.

But my friend and I have started the one-present-only-in-pass-the-parcel revolution - anyone care to join?

angmarie · 02/03/2007 21:49

the last party bags I did just had sweets, a box of raisins and a piece of cake none of the plastic crap , because I know with my two all they are interested in is the sweets and cake the other bits get either put in the bin or in a drawer somewhere and forgotton about.

amidaiwish · 02/03/2007 22:47
