I've said it before, but i think party bags suck, and will NOT be sending any home at dd1's party in 2 weeks time. I feel quite liberated by my decision.

would anyone like to join me in my humble protest against the party bag phenomenom?

And if you went to a dinner dance (I know, I know but I'm tired) and waiting at your table there was a small tissue paper parcel tied with curly silver ribbon and inside you found a chocolate heart wrapped in shiny silver paper and a raspberry pink nailpolish (or black depending on mood) would you grit your teeth and say 'load of crap' or would you think 'golly, I feel a little bit warm aand excited'??

pesme · 22/02/2007 22:18

i will be making litte dolls out of wooden pegs and the children will eat dust and be thankful.

pointydog · 22/02/2007 22:19

open up to the child within

noonar · 22/02/2007 22:21

yeah, but if you're entertaining on that scale, then it's reasonable to get into the realms of party favous, but for a small child's birthday, i think it's alot of expense. i also dont like the way children have come to expect a gift when they leave. now what i mean?

a chocolate heart, plastic bangle and tissue paper is a lot of expense?

Children expect several things at a party because those things are so damn exciting. Like games, a cake, a song, a party tea. And a party bag, yeah.

Why is the party bag the thing the adults want to leave out the party mix?

noonar · 22/02/2007 22:24

wooden peg dolls...now there's a thought.

lots of adult parties give guests a gift. Even if it's just a party popper and a hat with streamers.

Crackers even.

I remember my mum coming back from a dinner dance (yes) and she had save dme the after eight chocolate and I was so excited.

noonar · 22/02/2007 22:33

but surely we dont need party bags to make us feel good at the end of a party. if you like them, thats great, but my dd who's going to be 5 has never had one that didnt contain a nasty plastic toy and loads of cheap sweets. maybe thats why i hate them . i know lots of others who feel pressured to do them.

I'm with pointydog all the way on this one....

pointydog · 22/02/2007 22:34

but what does your dd think of them?

pointydog · 22/02/2007 22:35

and loads of people agree with you, noonar - expect them to pop up with war cries at any minute

noonar · 22/02/2007 22:39

she likes them. but she also wants to have 25 to her party. i 'm not doing 25 quality gifts, on principle. and i wont do 25 cheap ones on principle either. thats why we're doing the red noses- they come in a box with a stickers and a choc, so she'll have something to give out. and it's all for a good cause.

i'm sorry, but i do think that an extra £20-40 on party bags is a pressure for alot of people.

ps i agree that totally depriving dd of the giving to her guests ritual, would be mean. but i'm not doing that . am off to bed.

pointydog · 22/02/2007 22:43

oh, you're giving red noses? well that's just like a party bag. Kids'll love it

mateychops · 22/02/2007 22:44

noonar, I agree with your sentiment and your actions of this year. I bet a lot of parents will walk away from your kid's party thinking 'why didn't we think of this'. But don't dismiss the important of tat in the role of a party. It's like a goodie bag at the oscars.

(shuffles party dress back into the corner with cod, stands on chair to launch plastic man with parachute on back, slips on cake covered in princess tissue, falls and ends up spending afternoon and evening in local A&E)

noonar · 22/02/2007 22:46

phew, pointy.will sleep easy now taht i dont feel quite so mean!

mateychops · 22/02/2007 22:49

Night night, noonar, and hope you're not feeling too sick after all that cake..

CountessDaveula · 22/02/2007 22:51

I didn't do them for dd's last party
I found some plastic things full of pens that were originally £8 in woolies and were reduced to 99p and they all got one of those!

pointydog · 22/02/2007 22:52

sweet party dreams

suzycreamcheese · 22/02/2007 23:10

pointydog..can see this is close to your heart...
