Any good suggestions about where I can get small fun things for 6 year old's party bags?

Ds1 will be six next week and I haven't started to organise his party properly (it's on the 13th), Does anyone have any good places to go for party bag type stuff? I wanted to get a little book and a toy, but I can't find anything under a £1 for either and as there are about 25 kids coming to the party, the cost is getting silly. Can anyone help or suggest anything? Thanks.

The Book People for cheap books.

Hawkins Bazaar for fun cheap toys.

I've just bought the Party pack 1 from the Glow company for DD's party (20 kids) next weekend. But it does include a load of bracelets, so probably better for a mixed party. If all boys, there's other stuff on the website.

Ah the Book People - I was trying to remember that, I knew I'd seen it on here before, thanks Hunker. Will look at party pack too, there are quite a few girls coming, ds1 seem popular with the laydeees .

Try Amazon marketplace - you can get great deals for buying in bulk.
When my ds2 was 6 last year, he had a trampoline party and we didn't do party bags as such - just a slice of cake and a copy of Mr Bounce (natch!)
Cost about 75p a book if I remember correctly.

Pann · 05/01/2007 12:17

Wilbur! My dd is 7 on 13th, and we are having a party here at Pann Heights, so also need to check this stuff out.

LIZS · 05/01/2007 12:24

For dd's I got a load of Lego Clickit bracelets and Lego key fobs similar to this vastly reduced . Or how about stickers, pens, eraser .

Pann · 05/01/2007 12:31

and, my lovely next door neighbour is doing 'fire pui' in the back garden at dusk (around 4.30pm) - this is swinging two lengths of chain, with coals burning in parafin at the end of them. VERY dramatic in the dark.....

I can lease him out!!

JackieNo · 05/01/2007 12:32

Sounds fab, Pann.

Pann · 05/01/2007 12:35

the kids will be far away enough!
And we are off to see "Flushed Away" prior to party...busy day!!

Pann · 05/01/2007 12:38

Wilbur, is yours at home?? Does anyone have new/good home party games to suggest, please, for 9 girls? Treasure Hunt around the house is one............"lets see who is best at roofing" is another...

THe one good thing about birthdays at this time of the year (ds's is on teh 14th) is that you can get cheap stuff in the sales - woolies usually doa 3 for 2 on hotwheels cars, so they end up quite cheap, and Claire's do cheap bracelets etc for the girls. Last year I bought some bracelets and hair clips and tied them together with pretty ribbon for the girls. The boys got cars.

Wilbur · 05/01/2007 13:31

Hotwheels, that's a good idea, the boys all love those. I have just checked out The Book People and they are selling pack of 27 Roald Dahl Talking Books for £19 so about 70p each. Fab - have bought a pack and can use any left over for dd's b'day in May.

Pann - we do usually do parties at home and I prefer that but we are living away from our house at the mo due to building work, so I have hired a church hall for the first time. They have kids chairs and tables and I have some bunting so hopefully it will look nice. Anyway, what about a dressing up fashion game for your girls? 3 teams of three and they have to put together 3 outfits from stuff you give them (your old things, some charity shop raids, pieces of fabric etc), then they have to parade them down the catwalk - although you have to tell them not to fight over stuff!

I reckon a CD, small toy or bracelet, some stickers and some '6' cookies should be fine, yes?

I just get stacks of books from The Book People - check out their 'collections' section in children's fiction. The books usually work out less than £1 each. I wrap them up and give one to each child with a ballon (gets rid of the bloody things!!) and a piece of the birthday cake. I know as a parent, I would be quite happy for one of my dcs to receive that rather than a bag of plastic tat which gets lost in the car on the way home or a load more sweets when they are already suffering from a sugar rush.

JackieNo · 05/01/2007 13:34

Yes - am doing books from the Book People for DS's party this weekend (2 parties in 2 weekends - we must be mad).

Wilbur · 05/01/2007 13:36

Agree re sweets, I don't put them in as god knows they've had plenty of sugar already. We do the b'day cake as pudding for the tea so don't send a slice home which is why I do the cookies instead - ds1 like helping make them so they're sort of a tradition now.

The larger Tesco stores do party bag contents ie 6 whistles for 50p etc

mamalocco · 05/01/2007 13:48

Like the cookie idea (can I borrow it for ds's party next month??). The CDs are a good idea, but I think they come in one tin - they are not individually wrapped. I bought some, but they are currently in a box under sleeping dd2's cot so can't check right now! Might be an idea to get some plastic CD envelope things.

JackieNo · 05/01/2007 13:53

That cookie idea has just reminded me that we went to a party where the party bags included a cookie iced with the relevant child's name. Now that was very impressive.

Wilbur · 05/01/2007 14:03

Blimey - individual cookies, respect! The number cookie thing is from Nigella, so I can't claim ownership. Yes, mamalocco, the cds come together in a zipped bag, but I'm not worried that they won't be wrapped, they can just go in the bags.

Do you have a £1 shop? Or, my faithful .. eBay!

nikkie · 05/01/2007 20:20

Cds may come in cardboard sleeve?

Book people are having a sale atm so are even cheaper than normal

fizzbuzz · 05/01/2007 21:26

Hawkins Bazaar is your shop. V cheap and cheerful..

Skribble · 05/01/2007 22:51

Tesco is good for multipule packs of things as is the Pound Land for stationery things like pens, little note books, erasers etc.
