Okay, this is shirley's party advice part 6. Shirley ducked out a while ago and you'll notice us chatting about all kinds of stuff whilst we wait for party planners to barge in.

So, don't lurk, jump in and chat. We'll give you any advice on parties from costumes to cakes....

Dh is insisting that we do DD's party in our tiny house this year! She only wants 2 friends so it might be possible if I scale things down. Would it ruin it though?

NonsenseTalker · 19/08/2013 10:35

I'm not entirely sure what I will use on the sweet table, was thinking some cylinder vases, some glass bowls, some lidded jars etc but for the tables I wasn't sure if I wanted to do a centrepiece on each? Would a bowl of sweets be too much? I usually do balloons but I'd rather step away from that but don't think I could stretch to flowers after all of the sweets and jars.........

Jet I understand you wanting the siblings to not feel left out, but it could get expensive! Perhaps you could buy those 'my first library' book sets and split them up if they work out cheaper? Although I suppose, books would never go to waste so it's not really like you could have too many. Helpful aren't I? Wink

NonsenseTalker · 19/08/2013 10:41

No Blathers definitely not. Makes treasure hunts better IMO. It's just bad for you that you need to reign yourself in Wink

Ha - I agree with DW but I totally chicken out and feel bad if a child comes along and gets nothing! I even stated on my invites that siblings were welcome but I needed to know numbers. STILL, someone brought an older sibling along who wanted to join in and hadn't told me! It was easy for me because I did too much, so there was plenty to go around but if it was outsourced then I definitely wouldn't pay for extras!

NonsenseTalker · 19/08/2013 10:44

I was thinking something like this although mine will look nothing like that when the time comes! lol

Blathers: a party at home is fine! My gruffalo party was at home and that was ten kids crammed in and me the size of a whale pregnant.

And dd1's first birthday was at home with toddlers bombing around and jumping into a paddling pool of balls. 2 friends at home, easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Nonsense centrepiece for each table ideas coming up...oh and those pompoms, you make them and its piss easy! I did it with a three year old once. Hold on centrepieces...

Someone who knows my party obsession sent me a link to this this morning. Apologies but it's the Daily Mail.

It's good but I could do way better than that for £70k!

Tinkerisdead · 19/08/2013 13:40

Lol at at 70k!!! Imagine the parties we could do on 70k.

Nonsense: those pompoms make good flowers like dahlias if you had them on the ceiling you could make them fir the tables. It sounds lame but i made some once and i kept them for myself as they looked like big blousy peonies, really pretty. how to make them here

candy topiary trees uses less sweets per surface area so same effect cheaper than bowls of sweets

lollies work well in vases or pots and you can buy big ones like these on ebay

OP posts:
Tinkerisdead · 19/08/2013 13:45

Alternatively dont have sweetie centrepieces have spiced based ones, or alternate them...

candle wreaths from dried apple slices

Or even use christmassy type pou pourri in storm lanterns or similar to scent the air with spices. Make your own with fir cones/cinnamon sticks/star anise in vases using vanilla, cinnamon, ginger scented oils?

OP posts:
Tinkerisdead · 19/08/2013 13:47

Dried apple?!!! I mean orange, but you could do apple!

OP posts:
NonsenseTalker · 19/08/2013 14:31

I really like the spicy pot pourri idea. I could never make something like the apple/orange decoration.

I was going to try for lolly trees on the sweet buffet. But I like the lollies in vases/buckets and I don't want lolly overload. I might do some sweet trees but what puts me off is sticking the sweets to the tree. That just seems like a waste to me.

I'm going to have a try of the pom poms and see how they turn out and go from there. Tbh, if I am spending lots on sweets, I want everything as cheap as possible so they could definitely work as the centrepieces if I can make them right!

Tinkerisdead · 19/08/2013 14:40

When i made some i made them on a pipe cleaner rather than wire and then pushed the pipe cleaner stem into a drinking straw, then the heads were bendable/positionable to get a better effect.

I need some ideas for a 5 year old boys bithday party. There will be about ten 4 year olds ( mostly boys) and 5 cousins all slightly older. The venue is the local church hall with good indoor and outdoor spaces. It will be summer time. He would like to have a clown - hence the theme. I know some people are scared of clowns (his granmother for one!) so I want to down play that a little and focus more on the circus/fete type idea. I am thinking more Enid Blyton rather that Disney!

So, my questions are:

  1. Does anyone know of a wedsite to buy tableware that would suit? Printables are fine too.

  2. I would like to have 30 minutes at the beginning ( before the clown arrives) where they can choose activities to do. What sort of things would work? I should be able to get 3 or 4 helpers for this.

  3. What type of cake/ food would be fun?

Thank you ladies. All ideas would be gratefully received.

I've seen Blathers has answered tour other thread but we'll happily give you some more help and ideas here. I saw from your other thread title that you're leaning more towards circus than fete.

Give me a min whilst i make a pack-up and i'll come bavk and bombard you with ideas.

Aah thanks everyone - I feel a bit better now! It will mostly be younger siblings so will do the mini books idea!
I'm doing a sugarcraft course tomorrow for my birthday - SO looking forward to it!!
Nonsense I'm sure it will look as good as that on the day!

Circus party: i just typed loads out and lost it all when i try to link so i'll give ideas then link after.

Rather than a clown can you get a circus skills workshop to come normally they dress as clowns and demo the equipment. I went to one recently with my almost 5yr old. If you dont want to outsource it you could recreate it easily because a lot of the stuff was readily available like tin can stilts, diablo, poi, hulahoops, juggling balls or clubs, playe spinning, recreate a tightrope with a gym bench upturned if the hall has one?

For decorations, depending on how high the ceiling is you can create a big top tented effect using red/yellow or white crepe paper and a hula hoop. Balloons rather than dotted about, buy a canister if helium and balloons and fill them all and have a huuuuge mass like a balloon seller. You can recreate stations or stalls either doing circus skills games or old fashioned games like quoits, hook a duck in a paddling pool, lucky dip in sawdust, balls into a bucket, tin can alley and coconut shy.

Food, you can do this on two stalls sweet and savoury and actually could be doing yourself a big favour because instead if forcing them all to sit down you could let them come to the stall and carry on playing. (You wont lose the big cake blow moment as you can gather everyone around, maybe for a prize giving of best circus performer etc) anyway savoury food, hot dogs and burgers are ideal, if the hall has a kitchen you could possibly do oven chips and make cardboard portions of fries. Sweet, pick and mix, candy floss(you can buy it in tubs or bags cheaply) toffee apples and popcorn.

If you do the games like the tin can alley etc either do a leaderboard and a final prize giving or spot prizes like lollies etc for winners but you'll need to rope in some helpers for each "stall"
