Famous Five themed party for geeky adults :)

After some reminiscing among friends this weekend, I've suggested a Famous Five themed party, as I have both the 70s and 90s series on DVD [ebay addict emoticon]. Probably about 10-15 adults, but my 4 and 2 year olds will be there too.

I'm thinking a tent in the garden and lashings of ginger beer (obviously) but would love any other ideas too!

ROFL at sinister bearded people! That is awesome!

We do actually have some woody areas near our house so perhaps a hike is in order! With my binoculars of course. Unfortunately we don't have a private garden so a campfire is out of the question.

I'm going to search for FF games as we all love board/card games, but most of those I've seen don't seem that suitable for groups.

Servants, obviously (motherly, kind, constantly bringing in sumptuous repasts, and strangely unresentful of their exploited status).

A token black / gypsy / foreign child to commit the odd burglary and be patronised.

I think we may need to make it a fancy dress party.

Maybe some kind of forfeit every time somebody on the show says "gosh"

You will need a large, shaggy dog (or a large, shaggy dog suit)

PastGrace · 01/04/2012 16:07

I would make it fancy dress, but assign characters.

If you have a multiple of 4 coming then I would make everyone Julian/Dick/George/Anne (and George has to bring a cuddly dog) otherwise I would include minor characters (Quentin/Fanny etc).

All must wear rubber soled shoes and there should be plum cake as well as ginger beer. And ice cream - I remember one book where they all good terribly over-excited about ice cream.

YY to a secret passage/treasure map. When I was small we got snowed in at home and I became CONVINCED that the fireplace in my dad's study was actually covering a secret passage into a nearby house...Blush

A round, friendly ruddy faced farmer's wife with a churn of fresh milk, a basket of eggs and homemade bread and cheese.

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 16:15

I spent hours pressing all the wooden panels and fireplace stones at home. Never did find a secret passage :(

But OMG I just found this - I had it as a child. I may get some others in the series as I still remember the answer. It was the Guv'nor :o

Ideally 2 tents (one for boys one for girls) in the garden and a big silver mug for drinking tap spring water from. Be cool for the kids to play in.

Prize for who has most authentic pocket contents from a list of

string
mint humbugs
matches
chalk
compass
safety pin
torch

Some 'scientific papers' to hunt for, and a chalkboard with Uncle Q's figures on Grin
You could have huge fun with this one.

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 16:23

Aaaah I love MN I could never have thought of all this myself! :o

I think I could probably write an amazing quiz. FF was a huge obsession and although I don't have my old copies (they were ruined in my parents' attic :() I can easily access some in the library. Maybe have some kind of prize for it (nice torch maybe?!)

It has to be fancy dress. And giving people a person to be is an excellent idea. A couple of 'circus folk' might be good, if you run out of charecters.

Make some gold bullion to stack up in a corner dungeon. Wrap bricks in gold paper? That was their first adventure

I'd suggest adult cocktails like 'lashings of ginger beer' (with Jack Daniels or Whisky?) and 'refreshing lemonade' (with vodka/gin?)

Your food could be picnic style retro - sandwhiches and cream scones on old china plates etc. Fun!! I'd draw the line at anchovey paste or any paste though. Bleurgh

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 16:35

Ahem, they were ingots, if you don't mind.

Oooo yes! Awww. My dd is reading them all at the moment, it's lovely. Nostalgia abounds.

notnowImreading · 01/04/2012 16:42

You need plum cake, ginger cake, macaroons, a whole ham, tins of sardines, tinned milk (urgh) and a big pile of rugs to lie down on, preferably laid over heather. Everyone should wear jeans and a jersey. You should provide a few lengths of good stout rope.

vogonmothership · 01/04/2012 16:57

A mysterious large rusty key and some pillowcases sewn together and stuffed with straw, corned beef and tinned sardines. Sandwiches must be wrapped in greaseproof. Hard boiled eggs.

vogonmothership · 01/04/2012 16:58

don't stuff the corned beef and sardines in the pillowcase tho

SoupDragon · 01/04/2012 17:00

Oh keys.... didn't they press an Important Key into a convenient bar of soap to take an impression of it?

SoupDragon · 01/04/2012 17:01

On a slightly random note, the FF books appear to be available on Kindle now (to at least the first one is)

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 19:09

I just saw that Soup - while I was flicking through the Kindle Easter sale page. I have started recollecting EB mysteries/adventures as I liked lots of the series, but only when I see them in a charity shop really.

I had an idea - I will probably do the arranging via FB or email but I think I will send out invites too - in code :o

I am probably not going to do this party for a couple of months but gosh I am jolly excited :o

(see what I did there?)
