Famous Five themed party for geeky adults :)

After some reminiscing among friends this weekend, I've suggested a Famous Five themed party, as I have both the 70s and 90s series on DVD [ebay addict emoticon]. Probably about 10-15 adults, but my 4 and 2 year olds will be there too.

I'm thinking a tent in the garden and lashings of ginger beer (obviously) but would love any other ideas too!

You have to have the treasure inside a fake lining in the pantomime horses head .... or i will sulk and run off with Dick

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 19:29

:o

I was wondering about a treasure hunt but annoyingly our house is too tiny and messy

I am trying to think about some pen and paper type games that we can adjust to be all Blytony.

I once spent a whole afternoon with DSD (about 10 at the time) coming up with themed versions of 'consequences' - I'm sure there's an opportunity there...

What with all the holidays ... how old would they have been by the last book? 22ish??

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 19:41

I'm now wondering if I could find the sheet music to the theme tune and have a singalong...

I may be overplanning this Blush

You could have great fun making up pretend bits and people have to guess which are the real lines from the books, and which are made up. My dad used to do this when reading them to us and we could never tell.

One of my favourite lines in one of the Secret Seven books is "Absolutely not!" said Father. "I'm not waiting for ANY signal from the castle. I'm going up there RIGHT NOW and what's more I'm taking Matt the shepherd and the gardener with me". Poor old gardener is never worthy of a name.

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 21:00

I remember Matt the Shepherd!

The secret seven had badges didn't they - could make some ourselves.

They did... but I seem to recall they were badges with the letters "SS" on, which might throw people off your theme a bit...

fuzzpig · 01/04/2012 21:33

Indeed! Famous Five never had badges :(

You will be needing this book - and possibly this one too

fuzzpig · 02/04/2012 13:27

Ooh thanks I'll see if I can borrow them.

Right. Have requested the ginger beer book, it looks great! Also got one of those jigsaw mystery games.

That alcoholic ginger beer is just the ticket.
Scones? And ices. Always with the ices.

fuzzpig · 02/04/2012 21:06

Yes! Ices! I never really knew what that mean though, is it like choc ices?

OP posts:
SuePurblybilt · 02/04/2012 21:18

No, in old fashioned cookbooks usually when they say ices they mean water ices, or sorbets I spose. But I think in FF it meant ice cream.
It was usually between two wafers and cut from a block back then though, I think. So kind of like a choc ice. That'd be easy.

JeanBodel · 02/04/2012 21:19

You also need this link from Lucy Mangan to get you in the mood.

SuePurblybilt · 02/04/2012 21:35

Grin at Lucy Mangan. Love her.

fuzzpig · 02/04/2012 21:43

Fab article.

ISWYM about the ices, that makes more sense and is still quite doable thanks!

I mentioned the party at work today (in the context of children's authors) and one colleague thought it sounded great :o she was even singing the theme tune!

Julian, Dick and Anne, George and Timmy the do-oh-og

LaGrenouille · 04/04/2012 18:48

Have been looking for this thread, didn't realise this section existed! How about a Kirrin Island cake!

LaGrenouille · 04/04/2012 19:03

here

fuzzpig · 04/04/2012 19:11

OMG! That is a great idea.

OP posts:
LaGrenouille · 04/04/2012 19:15

Yayyy! Do take some pictures, to show us all. We love adventures.

Another thing I thought of was asking one of the guests to dress as a beardy fisherman sort, you know, a bit like the old Cpt Birdseye.

Maybe one of the clever cake ladies on here could give you some pointers on how to do the cake.

peeriebear · 04/04/2012 19:25

I ADORED the FF. I used to hole myself up on the sofa with all the cushions and a stack of books on rainy days and just work through them. My favourite by far was Smuggler's Top. 'Block' the inscrutable butler who was pretending to be deaf!
My boss at work will ask me to help with some ostensibly manly job and say "Peeriebear is as good as a boy any day!" :o
I always wondered what 'a ham' was as we only had sliced or those strange christmas tins...

fuzzpig · 04/04/2012 19:43

I don't think I could choose a favourite! I'd feel like I was betraying the other 20.

Unfortunately for some reason the DVD I have of the 1990s series has every episode except Smugglers Top :( haven't figured out why.
