Am sure Trills will know, she is just teasing you.

When she does tell us, I will file that info for future ref.

TrillianAstra · 16/09/2010 17:37

I have never wiped a computer. Vinny might know, she is a computer person. But Vinny only likes Macs. Or DiB?

right - if you delete a file even from the recycle bin the information isnt removed from the harddrive. it is just made less accessible. However it is very very hard to access it. so if you did remove it the new owner shouldnt have been able to retrieve it easily and if she did it leaves questions about why.

In order to completely rmove stuff you need an overwritter because even reformating doesnt remove all of the digital information. Police specialists can retrieve information from reformated harddrive. The overwritter is like a shredder that you can put on to run but doesnt remove the stuff you do want (i think) but clears the rubbish. There are several free ones. One reported to be used by the FIB is supposed to be good.

However the only failsafe way of clearing a harddrive is a giant electromagnet of doom.

OuchPassVodka · 16/09/2010 18:12

my timing is irrelevant again.

good to see you on thread shiney. and hope you get computer sorted soon.

bellavita · 16/09/2010 18:14

Oh dear... he said it isn't as simple as telling someone over the phone how to do it - he would need your machine to wipe everything.

He said it depends where your files have been stored and it isn't as simple as just deleting your browsing history.

Do you have a hardrive and a disk? He said the easy way is to reformat it.

BelfastBloke · 16/09/2010 18:15

Ahaha-ha-ha-ha!

Ho-ho-ho!

Shineon, Ouch is technically correct, by the way, but for your purposes reformatting the operating system (Windows) will be good enough.

Electromagnet would only really be necessary to prevent illegal stuff being retrieved by experts.

bellavita · 16/09/2010 18:16

It removes enough of it so that joe bloggs cannot see it Ouch.

OuchPassVodka · 16/09/2010 18:28

Electromagnetic wiping of harddrives is fun.

Yes, Ouch I know, but the bog standard joe bloggs probably won't be able to find it.

bellavita · 16/09/2010 18:36

No, you don't need to mention anything.

bellavita · 16/09/2010 18:37

When I told DH it was you that needed to know - he said you just couldn't make this stuff up... Grin and rolled his eyes!

TrillianAstra · 16/09/2010 18:41

Thing is, if you deleted from recycle bin then another normal person wouldn't have come across it by accident.

You definitely cleared cookies and got rid of browsing history and everything? Maybe she just got pop-ups saying 'xxx-rated' and thought it was your fault.

bellavita · 16/09/2010 18:43

DH said even if she had of cleared cookies, it would all still have been there under files. All the porn is held in files.

Do you like this? I like it. I think it is very me.

BelfastBloke · 16/09/2010 18:45

Not sure that's true trillian. I think it still can remain in the cache.

If I bought a laptop I would check the cache. I bet Shineon didn't erase the cache or the cookies, just the bin.
