DP turns 40 in a month and I am struggling for inspiration re his present.

What's the best thing you have bought for your other half?

And if they have had their 40th's what did you get him?

For dp's 40th this year I got him a beekeeping course.
Not everyone's ideal present of course but he thinks its fantastic!!

sundew · 14/08/2010 22:56

Best presents for my dh were an ipod and a digital radio - not massively exciting though!

Thomcat · 14/08/2010 23:00

Beekeeping is a nice idea. Not right for my DP but lovely present.
I-pods and all that sort of stuff he has already.

A Mazda MX5. A touch extravagant, I do admit.

Wow Zandy! Don't think I can stretch to one of those! Bet he was a happy chappy!

Yeah I considered something like that Mandy, v good pressie, but it's not really him tbh.

Best pressie ever got dh was a days experience at Knockhill racing circuit (about 10 years ago now, but he would love to do it again).

He was there for the full day and got to drive round the circuit in 2 or 3 different types of cars - including a single seater formula 2 car (I think).

He got a shot on the skidpan and got to drive on the offroad rally bit too, then got to brick himself as a passenger when the expert drove on the offroad rally bit.

I went and watched and he was like a big kid with a permanent grin all day.

Think it was about £250 10 years ago - extravagant (pre - ds) but worth it at the time - could never afford now!

Lindax · 14/08/2010 23:09

x-posted on the driving - went for a wee look at the Knockhill site in the middle of typing!

Lindax · 14/08/2010 23:11

what is he into?

is there other experiences he might like?

Thomcat · 14/08/2010 23:15

He likes his food, I considere Fat Duck but tasting menu is £500!

He's v into his house music, was / is a DJ.

Big into photography and has a great camera and lenses already though.

He's a bit into magic and does a few tricks.

Can't think of anything else really.

How about something like this - ZoomScape - you might be able to find something similar in your area. One day £134 or they have weekend packages too.

Wags · 14/08/2010 23:39

Some kind of photography course? DH did one in London recently, 2 day thing, really enjoyed it.

Thomcat · 14/08/2010 23:43

Thanks Lindax and Wags. Will look into that. Thank you x

I had one of those soft out of focus photos done (sis dragged me along to get a better deal) near the time and presented it as I couldn't think of anything else
Was so chuffed he had tears in his eyes.
Not sure your dh would be so impressed if he's a photographer though Hmm

Also did the Brands Hatch thing which dh loved.

How about a magicians course?

Wags · 14/08/2010 23:49

This is where DH went. He did the basic 2 day course. He already had some knowledge of photography and found that some ground was covered again, but he learnt loads. Looking through there are different levels and also personal tuition.

Thomcat · 14/08/2010 23:55

Thing is he's a pretty good photographer already, but self taught. Not sure what he'd get out of a course. Will research a few though and see what I find.

Not sure he would be up for a magicians course, but then again........ hmmmmmmmm food for thought.

Thanks ladies x

When DP was 40 I took him to New York for 4 days.(This is before DS was born)

When I was 40 (and DS was 1 year old) DP took us to a cottage in North Yorkshire for a long weekend.

Both breaks were fab.

How about a long weekend away somewhere?

Wags · 14/08/2010 23:58

Just looked on your profile.... guessing he took most of your photos. Yeah, might be a waste of money a course!!

Thomcat · 15/08/2010 00:06

I'd love to take him to New York, in fact that's where we were going for his 40th. But my boss keeps not paying me and it is a bit risky to do something that big with my job so uncertain. Would be top of my list though. Maybe I could do an iou, but not quite the same is it.

Can't remember my profile pics but think they must be way old, he's thrown a lot of money at amazing lenses recently-ish and has done quite a lot of stuff where people have paid him to take pics, inc 2 weddings. He's actually v good. Has an eye for this sort of thing but also puts in massive thought / energy into it all.

I just had a birthday and my main gift from him was a night in hotel in London with dinner and drinks etc so can't really do that sort of thing back for him.

Gosh this is hard isn't it!

It's so nice that you're taking the time to inspire / help me, really appreciate it. Sorry we're such a difficult couple to help! Smile

Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons? Friends have been for a weekend for 40ths and said it was amazing. Guessing £££ though.

marriednotdead · 15/08/2010 00:06

Just to add, it simply has to be an experience rather than a material thing (IMHO).
I realise that as I get older I remember what I did more than what I got, and get greater pleasure from it IYSWIM.
Not sure what happens when my memory starts to go Grin

Thomcat · 15/08/2010 00:09

Marriednotdead, yeah I agree. At 40 you kind of have everything you need, it's more about creating a memory really from now on.

Wags - ohhhhhh, am going to have a proper look at that website now. That looks FAB. Am liking that.

Wags · 15/08/2010 00:10

Shitty, shit shit Shock. Just looked at prices, my friends must be richer than I thought.

Eaglebird · 15/08/2010 00:11

Could you ask him to write a 'wish list' of things he'd like?

Then you could pick 1 or 2 things from the list, within your budget, safe in the knowledge that he'd love the gifts.

I always ask DP to write a Christmas list. Each year I'm astounded by how boring it is, but he's always over the moon with his gifts because they're exactly what he wants.
(I know, not very exciting!)

Thomcat · 15/08/2010 00:12

£460 is the cheapest room for 1 night and then there'd be dinner! How lovely would that be though. He loves Raymond as well.
