The volume of advertised jobs for Graduates is apparentely at a historical low which is obviously worrying for students and their parents.

Just interested in sharing experience and perhaps offering assistance to those going through the job hunting process.

Has your young person secured a job? If so what subject did they do and how did they find the role?

I have a dc who secured an internship this summer, he is studying STEM and found the job directly from the company site. He is hoping to get a return job offer however he hasn't loved the job so will be looking for other opportunities. He may take a year out and improve his language skills as it might add to his CV.

I started work in the graduate job in my degree subject three years after I graduated, 25+ years ago. A lot of my friends have never worked in something that relates to their degree. One of my friends out of ten of us, perhaps, went straight into a graduate scheme job. Another was travelling and working for many years after her degree. It's not purely a modern phenomenon or uniquely tough to walk into the job you want after graduating now.

And also we all moved to different parts of the country to look for/get work.

In the early 1990s I remember my dad couldn't get a decent job locally and had to work 300 miles away and only come back at the weekend. He also had two big career changes after being made redundant in the 1980s. My mum started as a bank clerk, worked in marketing, ran a shop and did secretarial and admin work during her working life. People have often had to undergo career change when there were no jobs, be prepared to move area or country. My grandfather left school amid a great economic depression in the early 1930s and cycled from Stoke on Trent to Manchester and went door to door looking for work as he did not want to be a potter or miner which were the only opportunities (if that) at home.

I was the first person in my family to go to university. In my experience the only people that fell straight into fantastic career jobs were connected and privileged.

It is tough out there . Dd’2’s friend is working in hospital admin job in a private hospital which requires GCSE Maths and English. DD2’s friend has a first class degree in a STEM subject
She is just happy to have a job and is grateful for the experience she is gaining .Getting a place on a graduate scheme is extremely difficult, Graduates looking for work have to be flexible and be prepared to work their way up

Barclays has just announced 5000 job losses due to AI.

It has but just to counter this, for the sake of encouraging people it is not all doom for our grads, overall employment is holding up well and a survey of grad employers I saw suggested a slight increase in recruitment this year.

@Wewinnowyour ds is doing well to get to video interview stage. It’s a numbers game unfortunately. Has he tried applying to some smaller or local companies? Also, any job is a useful way to demonstrate soft skills like reliability, working as part of a team etc. It sounds like he is trying hard so good luck.
