How much are we spending on children aged 20+

Just this really. I've a 20 year old who receives nothing from his dad and so I've always overcompensated. I do have a younger child at home and would really like to ensure they have more now. As a guid, what are we spending on adult children?

About £300 each. They are aged 25 and 28. Both single

mumonthehill · 30/11/2025 14:13

A gift or cash of £100 then stocking bits so chocolate, nice smellies, a bottle of drink etc. they know this is what we do now.

reversingdumptruckwithnotyreson · 30/11/2025 14:19

I ask DD what she wants, pick what I can afford from that and then also some little bits as treats and package everything really nicely.

But usually I’d say maybe about £100 or less. Sales start right after so I’ve always found it a bit wasteful for the sake of a couple days.

Twistingkelp95 · 30/11/2025 14:20

Mine are getting Christmas jumpers and pjs and a few bits of make up and things like knee high black 40 denier socks plus a paperback and chocolate in their stockings. Amounts to about €175 each.

And they are happy with that as we paid for them to go travelling long haul this summer.

Next summer they are signed up to paid internships so last summer was a bit of a special trip for both of them and probably the last time we will fund them travelling.

I have spent more on 20yo DS this year because he needed a new lap top for his uni work so that was £500 plus he needs some new trainers and a hoody, he’s on a student budget so I am happy to spend this. When he’s no longer a student it will be about £200.

Alexadidzammomarryjackie · 30/11/2025 15:18

DD is 20. I've spent about £400 so far: 2 lots of gig tickets, a book, a dvd box set, jumper and a couple of little bits. I'm also getting her some trainers then she's done. She hasn't asked for any of it and has no idea what she's getting, but it's things I know she'll love/use and I like spoiling her.

DelphiniumBlue · 30/11/2025 15:29

Mine are 24-32. I'll probably spend more on the youngest as he isn't working, whereas as the older ones earn more than me and can afford to buy themselves whatever they want. So it will be about £200 on youngest, new headphones clothes and stocking fillers, and about £150 on the other 2. But it depends on who wants what - mine are not very materialistic- and some years it's a lot less . But there have been years when one of them got something like a Playstation, and others when it's been a few books and tshirts.

Sounds stupid but I don’t know why Christmas jumpers are popular? Surely they’re just worn on one day of the year?

I should have been more explicit. The ones I’ve ordered are definitely jumpers that you can wear the rest of the winter. They are fairisle pattern. Don’t have ho ho ho emblazed on them or anything! I just called them that bc they are Christmas presents ifyswim.

KingscoteStaff · 30/11/2025 15:50

DD 22 Garmin watch (£200ish?) + Stocking (£50ish)
DS 24 Ski boots (£220ish) + Stocking (£50ish)

kittywittyandpretty · 30/11/2025 15:52

About £250 each and I always top it up with a cash deposit into their bank account
I think that feels fair and about right
Some years they need more than others, I’ve got one who will be moving into her first house next year so she’ll need white goods etc
This is her last year of getting cosmetic gift sets I would imagine

Allseeingallknowing · 30/11/2025 15:57

£60 each on adult children.

Lightuptheroom · 30/11/2025 16:02

My ds is 23, around £150 as he lives elsewhere and has to do his own Christmas due to work schedules . Step son age 30 lives with us and gets £50

gogomomo2 · 30/11/2025 16:04

Mine are mid 20’s and independent, dd2 earns 4x what I earn (I did her taxes and saved her quite a bit!) I spend around £75-100 but it varies a bit. They have others who buy from them and are inheriting alas, they prefer I spend money visiting them than consumerism

Noshadelamp · 30/11/2025 16:05

I spend about £100-150 on toiletries gift set (boots star gift), for my DS scent from Next as he likes big bottles and uses them like body sprays, a couple of books, item of clothing, some food item like set of hot sauces,
Bit more for DD as she's not working full time so the toiletries set, perfume of her choice, book, oracle deck, handbag she wants from tkmax a scarf, hair treatment.
Then we put £150 on their banks.

Every year we say we're going to buy less so they can have more money in the bank but I know they don't ever buy stuff for themselves, they tend to use the money on going out or flight plus I like buying for them.

I'm also making my DD a tote bag and matching makeup bag.
Making my DS and DH some gingerbread and putting in handmade drawstring bags.

ohtowinthelottery · 30/11/2025 16:10

Usually around £200 - £250 mark. But he's bought a house this year and is single so doesn't have much spare cash, so we might buy him a shed (which will obviously cost more, but which he needs for storage).

Oh thanks and they sound lovely.

I remember a few years back my stepdaughter announced she'd like a PS5. All £500 odd of it.😁 We got her it on credit. That was definitely a one off because she never usually wants anything as dear as that.

My dcs are the same ages and I'm probably spending similar? I'm stopping stockings this year. Ds1 has a gf her birthday is near Christmas so I gave her money now and I'll buy her a gift.

ShaunaOfTheDead · 01/12/2025 10:24

About £100-150 each. Clothes, book, edibles and cash usually.

Volumeindrive · 03/12/2025 21:37

They are working now, so no big cheques anymore. We take them out for dinner to a special restaurant and we do a Secret Santa.

dontmalbeconme · 03/12/2025 22:10

About £500 each. We're fortunate enough to easily afford it.

Ahsheeit · 03/12/2025 22:15

£75 each, including stocking bits.

pinkspeakers · 03/12/2025 22:32

Not sure, we dont have a budget as such. But thinking about the gifts I've got in mind I guess it will be about £200-250, which is no different from when they were younger. They are still early 20s at the moment, single and fairly broke. I imagine I will reduce it as they get older, better off, and as they have partners/children that need presents too.

Icequeen01 · 03/12/2025 22:53

DS is 26 and he asked for a new computer chair. It’s more expensive than we would normally buy but he’s so difficult to buy for we were just pleased for a suggestion. I’ve also got him a few other bits so we have probably spent around £400. It was his birthday yesterday and he had a new keyboard for his computer and a couple of other bits. It’s an expensive month for us!
