Waiting for resit results on ACA

DS retook an exam today - if he fails it, he loses his job.

The results should be in already (from 5am) but we haven't heard anything from him. No news is definitely not good. He has genuinely worked so hard to pass this exam, I feel so bad for him.

I just want to run upstairs and ask him - get it over and done with.

He's going to have to go into work tomorrow knowing he'll get sacked - it's going to be tough.

How many times has he failed?

Weekendwatch · 26/10/2025 09:08

He retook on a Sunday?

WeeFinbar · 26/10/2025 09:29

I’m guessing this is the certificate stage of the exams?

What level of firm is he training with? The Big 4 can be ruthless in this.

If he is unfortunately shown the door, it would be worth taking a step back and considering why he has failed twice, as the professional and advanced stages will not get easier.

if it is a case of struggling with work / study balance (rather than raw ability) then a step down to a smaller firm may give him more headspace to get qualified.

Good luck!

GreenSweeties · 26/10/2025 09:34

Good luck to him. I remember my lovely neighbour's daughter being in a similar position (she passed). However it was quite telling that when my DD was deciding between job offers. Neighbour's DD said avoid her big 4 firm - workload mental and brutal approach to exams. What's his plan B?

JacknDiane · 26/10/2025 09:43

Hope he passes @saxyfone. How many resits is he allowed and is this his first exam?

It takes weeks to get marked

saxyfone · 26/10/2025 11:16

He passed! Sorry typo @Weekendwatch he took the exam yesterday. Certificate level at one of the Big 4, allowed one resit.
The circumstances around the first exam were challenging - loads of things went wrong that were beyond his control - he'd been scoring 80s in the mocks.

DD was at a big 4 and a few of her starting friends failed and were sacked. It’s a really hard exam and it’s brutal. I hope he’s passed it and he’s okay.

Cross post! Well done to him! DD said it was way harder than A levels or degree but she’s on an unbelievable salary now after a job move and is only 27 so worth the pain!

Plan B is to get through his first year and reassess where he goes next year - he likes his team and isn't afraid of hard work but he finds exams stressful, doing the exam remotely didn't help - so he'll do all of them in person from now on.

Congrats to your dd! I think it'll be worth it - the job suits him, he likes his team and his manager - the first few months are hard in any job.

Many Congratulations indeed. He's done well. No ACA paper is easy. Ds1 has his final 3 to do.

JacknDiane · 26/10/2025 13:01

Well done to him.

saxyfone · 26/10/2025 13:23

Hmm. He’s just told me he got 88%. He’s not happy, annoyed about the original exam shit show. He was really doubting himself and now he’s just pissed off with the whole show.

I’m confused

he has passed
he won’t be sacked

and his response is to be “pissed off”?

Why?

Navigatinglife100 · 26/10/2025 14:04

He needs to learn from.this experinence and not be #####d off.

Its a tough industry. Im an FCA and have the grey hairs to prove it. But its also a very rewarding one.

A fail needs to be analysed. If his fault, learn from it as the exams only get tougher, if it wasnt then understand if he did all he could in the circumastance - putting in a timely appeal, raising with an invigilator/electronic process - then just park it as one of lifes unfair experiences.

Working for the Big 4 comes with extreme pressures of all.types but, certainly in my time, also came with better remuneration and options after qualifying.

Good luck to him for the future exams. One fail doesnt define him - especially as thats all done and dusted now.

I think he's coming down from the adrenaline. It's been hard for him to fail - he's put himself under enormous pressure. He's starting to smile again. It's been emotional.

Yes and I imagine he may have felt very humiliated at work too

Yes there was a lot of grads asking what he got - and always by those who did incredibly well. It’s not the impression he wanted to make but he’ll bounce back.

herigoagain · 30/10/2025 10:07

How many papers have to be sat for ACA if you start with a degree (no exemptions though). A relative has just started studying.

saxyfone · 30/10/2025 11:19

It’s changed this year, used be 15 exams - 5 at each level but now I think it’s 6,6 and with 2 exams and a case study at advanced level.
