My DS (23) is buying his first house with his girlfriend. They currently live in a flat together. I want to buy them some moving in presents. I'd like to focus on the boring stuff that you really hate spending your hard earned cash on - as I want useful and they'd find it quite funny. We're going to give them some cash as well so they can choose some big ticket items as we know they'd prefer to choose that sort of thing for themselves. What did you really need when you moved into your first house but hadn't thought to get for yourself?

pyrex kitchen jug
kitchen scissors
pizza cutter
kitchen plastic tubs - storage
mixing bowl
oven gloves
kitchen tongs

Toilet brush

vase - buy flowers as well?

mats - to put mugs on etc

Burntt · 02/05/2025 08:45

Phone chargers 😂

CalypsoCuthbertson · 02/05/2025 08:46

Laundry/washing basket
clothes horse
draining board
vacuum cleaner
iron
ironing board
mop and bucket
extension lead (for cutting the grass)
cheese grater
kitchen knives (Kitchen Devils are really sharp)
potato masher

I’d try to suss out what style/colours they (or maybe more the girlfriend!) likes though… it can be really exciting setting up your first home and having your first chance to decide exactly how you want a house to look!

Washing line - if they have a garden or clothes airer (maybe a heated one) if they don't!

Rebootnecessary · 02/05/2025 08:51

Oh - and pegs!

cadburygorilla · 02/05/2025 08:52

I wish someone had given me good quality pans when I got my own home a few years ago!

GreenSkyes · 02/05/2025 08:54

If they already live together they'll have a lot of stuff already.

I'd say a rotary washing line and pegs, if they've gone from a flat to house, it's unlikely they've ever had one.

LobeliaBaggins · 02/05/2025 08:55

Air Fryer? a good wok or set of knives?

Mindymomo · 02/05/2025 08:59

What I did for my DS and gf was to get them a canvas print of a photo themselves, they wanted to buy everything else themselves so we gave them money

BunnyRuddington · 03/05/2025 07:38

I agree that they’ll have a lot of the things they’ll need as they already live together.

How about a planter for the garden, a washing line and some naice pegs that will last? Will they need any gardening tools like a strimmer or lawnmower?

Peclet · 03/05/2025 07:42

Good pans and knives
a lovely throw:blanket for the sofa
a decent vacuum cleaner
a steam mop

WonderingWanda · 03/05/2025 07:48

If they are getting a garden then garden furniture - even if just a couple of deckchairs or a lawnmower or maybe a BBQ. Curtains. Saucepans. Towels. Bed linen. Serving plates / dishes. Serving spoons. Karcher window vac. A diy guide and some basic tools.

lodhkalp · 03/05/2025 09:20

When we moved into our first home my mum bought us a paper shredder, we still have it 15+ years later, it’s great 😂

Sounds like a slightly left field gift but very useful Smile

mumonthehill · 03/05/2025 09:44

Ds 24 about to buy his first home and we have got some garden furniture for them. Also a set of drills etc for the DIY they need to do! I am going to get them a beautiful chopping board made from local wood and then a John Lewis voucher so they can buy what they want.

Coffeeishot · 03/05/2025 09:47

I gave my Dd and Son in law an ikea voucher dd loves the marketplace so she bought all their nick nacks .

LovelySG · 03/05/2025 09:47

A really good/ nice set of cutlery
A really good/ nice set of white china
A really good/ nice set of pans
A Le Creuset casserole

FinallyMovingHouse · 03/05/2025 09:48

My best present would be a big voucher from John Lewis or Currys or such.

Hephebe · 03/05/2025 09:49

One of those Brabantia waterproof peg bags that you can leave out on the line, life-changing.

Foldable laundry baskets from JL (actually they night be Brabantia too).

Multi-use stick blender with processor attachment? Bosch Ergomixx type.

Set of matching hot water bottles (admittedly not v. seasonal right now). Standing fan instead, before it gets dead hot and the shops sell out?!

Screamingabdabz · 03/05/2025 09:49

Pizza oven
Posh candle like Diptique
Good cutlery that’ll last a lifetime (like Robert Welch)
Silver photo frame
Bottle of Champagne with nice champagne glasses

CousinBob · 04/05/2025 03:03

Doormat

McSpoot · 04/05/2025 03:10

If they aren’t built in, I often give:
Smoke detector
Carbon monoxide detector
Kitchen fire extinguisher

DreamTheMoors · 04/05/2025 03:12

Either a table or floor lamp.
I still have the one my mum gave me for my housewarming 40+ years ago.

RoaRiRi · 04/05/2025 04:53

A tool box filled with good quality DIY kit

sashh · 04/05/2025 05:23

In my first place my grandmother got me sat, vinegar, herbs, spices - she said they don't cost much on their own but when you buy them together it can cost.

Do they have a first aid kit? They might be doing DIY so it could be useful.

Agree with tools and toolbox but that can be expensive.

A professional cleaner for before they move.
