Ds is due home at the end of the month after his year abroad in Australia. It has cost so much money. He’s used all his savings. We’ve given him a fair bit, he’s still not had enough money to travel round some of Australia as he’s planned. So he’s only seen Brisbane, where he is, not even any beaches there and he’s been to Sydney. He’s got his usual summer job starting 30th June until mid sept. Then one more final year of uni. He’s hearing of all his mates finishing up, I think part of him wishes he was finishing. I don’t think Australia was quite how he expected.

That’s interesting. I think DD was jealous of people venturing further than her, but actually she had the most amazing year in Austria and explored so much of the country and surrounding ones. Overall it’s probably cost less than a year in Bristol as well.

I have seen that way of helping with their deposit mentioned on other threads @Oblomov24 .

Well, 24 hours in and we are starting to adjust. It does feel a bit weird, I'm not great at transitions and can't help feeling a bit sad that DS's happy uni days are over, he seems ok though. I remember feeling a bit deflated when I left mine, I went home for the summer but had a job to go to away from home in the September. The house feels very cluttered as DS's stuff is everywhere while we get it all cleaned and sorted, done about 6 loads of laundry. This is a small house so it does feel a bit crowded when we're all here.

OublietteBravo · 02/06/2025 10:40

DD has gone off to her interview. Fingers crossed it goes well!

ealingwestmum · 02/06/2025 10:44

Absolutely @OublietteBravo, hope she enjoys it too 🤞

craggyrat · 02/06/2025 11:13

Good luck to your DD @OublietteBravo

Shimy · 02/06/2025 11:51

@OublietteBravo Good luck to DD.

@Oblomov24 I've read about people doing that before and it seems like a good shout. In my circle of friends, they haven't charged rent to their adult dc but the dc have standing orders in place to transfer a large portion of their salary monthly and that seems to be working too.

crazycrofter · 02/06/2025 12:13

Good luck to your Dd @OublietteBravo !

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/06/2025 14:17

Hello everyone, not a chance I'm able to catch up with everyone's news after so long but hoping that everyone is well.

Good luck to your DD with her interview @OublietteBravo

DS has finished his degree today, final exam sat this morning. It feels a bit unreal to be honest. Not sure when he plans to come home, probably after the graduation ball in a couple of weeks I think. He doesn't have a job lined up but has been applying along with approx.. 2 billion other law grads.

Good luck to all the DCs who have finished / are finishing soon with their job hunting. To all the DCs with another year to go, it'll be over in the blink of an eye!

DS2 taking his exams this week for his predicted grades and so the cycle begins again!

mummyinbeds · 02/06/2025 14:58

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn nice to 'see' you. How has your DS found the final year of law? Is he applying for city law jobs?
I think it's going to be a shock to my DS's system going back to English law, although at least he might understand what's being said.

OublietteBravo · 02/06/2025 15:24

I’m just popping in to say thank you for all the good luck wishes for DD. They obviously worked - she got the job!!!

She been pretty efficient as she only got home on Saturday evening. Sounds like they want her to start asap - she should get the contract tomorrow. £30k starting salary, which seems OK for an entry-level PA role.

crazycrofter · 02/06/2025 15:43

That's fantastic @OublietteBravo - well done to your dd!

mummyinbeds · 02/06/2025 15:49

Brilliant news @OublietteBravo . Well done to DD 😁

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/06/2025 16:12

@OublietteBravo that's fabulous news, well done to your DD!

@mummyinbeds He found it OK, handed in his dissertation a couple of weeks back and has sat two exams since, he needs all three to do very well to get a 2:1 so I'm praying to all the gods that he gets 'nice' examiners!! 😬
He has been applying for London jobs but not had any luck so far. I think he's a bit disillusioned with the whole process but now that he has finished with uni he can start the full time hunt for a job.

Did your DS enjoy his French year? I hope his final year back in Notts is a really good one and he settles back in easily.

Shimy · 02/06/2025 16:33

Yay! well done to @OublietteBravo 's DD. That's great news and she heard so quickly, love that.

Congratulations to @JustHereWithMyPopcorn who's just graduated. Wishing him all the best with his job search.

crazycrofter · 02/06/2025 17:20

Good to hear from you again @JustHereWithMyPopcorn ! Good luck to ds with the job hunt!

craggyrat · 02/06/2025 17:34

Fantastic news for your DD @OublietteBravo

mummyinbeds · 02/06/2025 19:14

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn good luck to him with the job search. I never became a lawyer with my law degree. Even a million years ago training contracts were stupidly competitive. But I have always worked with some connection to law. I can't see my DS becoming a lawyer either.
DS has loved (is still loving) France. The organisation of the uni has been challenging - he's still waiting for his exam results but the date to register for resits has been and gone for example. Hopefully he'll have passed enough credits to satisfy Nottingham. His final year seems rather intense with two extra French modules compared to year 2 and still three full year law modules. No dissertation though.

NCTDN · 02/06/2025 20:31

Fantastic news @OublietteBravo

EwwSprouts · 02/06/2025 20:54

Super outcome @OublietteBravo

25newernames · 02/06/2025 20:58

Well done to mini @OublietteBravo!!

findint a graduate job seems very difficult. Of all of DS’s friends who are coming back this summer, not one has found a graduate job so far.

Even if things had gone to plan DS would have had another two years left, with resitting the year it would have been three years left. Despite him having had an awful time and being in a bad state when he left uni, we are all convinced that where he is now is the right thing for him. He is thriving work wise and hoping they will pay for him to do his degree alongside when he has finished his initial training.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/06/2025 21:36

@mummyinbeds when does he get back from France? So nice to hear that he has enjoyed it and fingers crossed that he gets the credits he needs. His third year sounds intense but at least no dissertation, it took DS months to do his and had to basically redraft it three times. DS has talked about trying to get a job outside law just to get into work but ultimately he does still want one a solicitor.

@25newernames that’s depressing about the jobs, I hope they all find something soon. I’m so glad to hear that your DS is doing so well now, what a turn around. Well done to him!

crazycrofter · 02/06/2025 22:03

That’s brilliant @25newernames , so glad it’s worked out well for him!

Oblomov24 · 03/06/2025 20:17

Well done dd @OublietteBravo!

Aslockton · 03/06/2025 22:03

Great news @OublietteBravo. Is the PA job a personal assistant or physician's assistant or something else?!

DS has arrived safely after driving 16hrs (over 3 days) towing a 6m long trailer to the Czech Rep to compete. He is now in a training camp for a week. The journey to the competition is always the worse part for me as a mum.

craggyrat · 04/06/2025 07:02

Wow @Aslockton that's quite a drive! Best of luck to him
