Hope he has an amazing time @Comefromaway ! My DS was also a big train fan. We still have a Thomas the Tank Engine magazine with a photo of 3 year old DS in on the fan page.

ExpensiveDecoration · 09/04/2025 20:02

DS was obsessed with the Thomas the Tank Engine books when he was about two, but has never shown much interest in trains in real life, even though we are lucky enough to live within sight of a steam railway. I never tire of watching them go past. We had the Flying Scotsman a few years ago, it drew huge crowds.

craggyrat · 09/04/2025 20:05

We're not far from York so spent a LOT of time at the Railway Museum!

Shimy · 09/04/2025 20:53

Another one with a DS who absolutely loved Thomas the Tank Engine. I, on the other hand, hated having to read them as they were so boring. DS's favourite was the Gruffalo and there was a Fireman book (can't remember the name), with a particular page where we had to make the sound 'Nee Naw, Nee Naw', that was the highlight of story time Grin.

ExpensiveDecoration · 09/04/2025 20:56

Oh yes, we had to read The Gruffalo multiple times every night for quite a while too. The worst was this bloody awful book about tractors. "The green tractor mows the field. The red tractor sows the seeds"

mummyinbeds · 09/04/2025 21:03

Hairy McLary from Donaldsons Dairy. I didn't even need to open the book to read that one. And the Grufalo, and Room on the Broom... DS preferred his Thomas the Tank Engine DVD (on a loop) to the books though.

mummyinbeds · 09/04/2025 21:08

@Comefromaway hope your DS has an amazing time in Paris. DS is hoping to take a trip there after his exams, to visit some friends he met in his first semester in Toulouse. I don't think he realises we live closer to Paris than Toulouse is to Paris.

Comefromaway · 09/04/2025 21:31

Trains were his special interest before music took over!

I think we bought the entire Thomas the Tank Engine series, all 100 (possibly slight exaggeration) from NRM. Gosh they were dull but if DS started a series you had to plough through it. Dinosaur Cove was another never ending series.

@mummyinbeds Love Hairy McClary. The illustrations in Rumpus at the Vets are brilliant.

ExpensiveDecoration · 09/04/2025 22:32

Oh I'd forgotten about Hairy Mclairy. Once we went shopping in a nearby city centre at Christmas when it was packed and within the space of about 5 mins dogs identical to all the ones in the book went past us, the DCs loved it.

crazycrofter · 09/04/2025 22:51

Ds had literally no interest in books! It was quite a shock after having dd,who loved them! Ds was too hyperactive to sit still for a story but he was obsessed with the film Cars and had all the toy cars! Every day had to start with 20 mins of the film with him reenacting the story with his own cars on the floor … I knew that film so well 🤣

Hope Ds has a fab time @Comefromaway , what a great job to get!

craggyrat · 10/04/2025 06:51

DS has Cars downloaded on his phone....His favourite was Charlie Cooks Favourite Book for bedtime reading

crazycrofter · 10/04/2025 22:19

Ds often listens to the Cars soundtrack @craggyrat 🤣

OublietteBravo · 11/04/2025 20:27

DD headed back to Cornwall today. She drove, and it took her 7 hours! She’s picked up some extra shifts and will be working quite a bit over Easter. DS is still here for another 2 weeks.

ExpensiveDecoration · 11/04/2025 21:22

Ooof @OublietteBravo . I picked DS up today, it was busy on the roads. In good news from him, he had been getting a bit concerned about how much work he still has to do and was thinking about only staying for a couple of days but he had a meeting with his learning support person this week and was told he's easily on track to get finished so he can relax a little. He's gone out with school friends tonight and going to a hockey club bash tomorrow.

Zebracat · 12/04/2025 09:45

Our girls home until Monday. She seems really happy. Turned up in a tiny crop top and baggy jeans, a world away from the self diagnosed with body dysphoria girl we got 7 years ago. And is busy eating us out of house and home which is also very different. She’s off on her travels from Monday, and waiting to hear if she gets her year abroad, So so different. I’m off tomorrow to see my little grandson( you all know his name but please don’t say it!) he’s very suddenly diagnosed with diabetes and my Dd needs help with the baby while trying to routinise a complex regime for the toddler , so that he can go back to nursery. Bit of a nightmare really.

Oblomov24 · 12/04/2025 09:56

Very sorry to hear that @zebra.I was diagnosed at 1, so totally understand.

crazycrofter · 12/04/2025 10:13

Sorry to hear about your grandson @Zebracat but great news about the progress your girl has made!

Well done to Ds @ExpensiveDecoration for being on top of his work! Not sure I can say the same about dd but she’s done two shifts at the warehouse this week and is going back to Nottingham today for four Nando’s shifts, then back again Wednesday..

In other news Ds has had a motorbike accident in Vietnam and his wounds got infected so he’s now in hospital on IV antibiotics. Once I’m over the worry about his health, I’ll start worrying about the cost as his travel insurance won’t cover it 😩

ealingwestmum · 12/04/2025 10:22

It is so good to read about your DD’s progress @Zebracat, I wish you all well navigating the diagnosis of your GS.

Wow @crazycrofter your poor DS! I hope he responds to the AB’s quickly, relieved to hear he was proactive on seeking assistance!

Oblomov24 · 12/04/2025 10:27

Poor ds crazy. Hope he recovers quickly.

25newernames · 12/04/2025 10:55

Hope DS has a swift recovery @crazycrofter

Cantonet · 12/04/2025 11:23

Your poor ds @crazycrofter. I hope he recovers rapidly .His life & yours by default seems full of major ups & downs. Which I guess means life is never boring!
Glad to hear your girl is so happy @Zebracat but sorry about your grandsons diagnosis.
The news here is that d2 here has got a job working as a Hyde Park lifeguard this summer. So she will stay in London & maybe try fit in a bit of travelling in September. Dh is sad as he has said it's the last of the family holidays.

crazycrofter · 12/04/2025 12:23

I'm not sure if we'll have any more family holidays either @cantonet 😥.
It does mean our holidays will get cheaper though!

Ds wasn't that quick getting help actually; it happened on Tuesday and he went to hospital yesterday - he was too worried about the cost! But I'm glad he's there and getting the right treatment now. I had just said to my colleague a couple of days earlier that ds not being at home was actually providing me with a bit of a break from the constant worry - and then he called me yesterday with the words 'don't tell Dad but....'

Comefromaway · 12/04/2025 12:58

Oh no Crazy. I do hope he recovers quickly & it’s not too expensive. Can I ask why it’s not covered by insurance? Not to pry or judge but just to learn of any pitfalls with foreign travel.

sorry to hear about your grandson’s diagnosis zebra but so glad your girl is doing well.

Zebracat · 12/04/2025 12:59

Oh crikey @crazycrofter . I told my kids - No tattoos, no motorbikes, and somehow they obeyed, to date. Your Ds makes me so anxious. It must be hell for you.😱
