Thread 51 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer 24 - End of Uni Yr 2

1000 replies

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 15:15

2024 Summer, end of year 2 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Well done ds2! @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

PhotoDad · 22/08/2024 11:59

Well done, @JustHereWithMyPopcorn DS2!

The camping group in North Wales slept in the car last night, tent barely survived with tears and rips as wind lifted flaps, a broken pole, etc. They're staying with a friend tonight. We needed a new tent, anyway!

I also feel much more able to relax, or get things done, as appropriate, when I have the house to myself for a few days. (And, agreed, to get the shopping with no complaints, and to tidy without things being dumped on every available surface.)

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/08/2024 12:02

Thank you, he's gone off to the gym now presumably to work off some of that adrenaline!

@PhotoDad that camping sounds frightening, hope they are all OK.

Seeline · 22/08/2024 12:06

Great news @JustHereWithMyPopcorn !

Cantonet · 22/08/2024 12:19

Very well done to your ds @JustHereWithMyPopcorn 👏🏼
Gosh @PhotoDad . That sounds horrible. Near the Welsh border here & it's been so windy.

Comefromaway · 22/08/2024 12:20

Well done popcorn ds2

ealingwestmum · 22/08/2024 12:55

Well done to your DS2 Justhere!

Shimy · 22/08/2024 12:56

Congratulations to @JustHereWithMyPopcorn jnr! wonderful news, an era nearly over.

@Seeline Gosh! your brood sounds like mine. Constant cries of there's no food BUT there is food (what they mean is a ready made meal Hmm), they just don't want to cook it but all the ingredients are there, of course when i ask them what they want they also can't think of anything. They'll learn whether they like or not.

Goodluck to you all at your school with the inspection @PhotoDad .

craggyrat · 22/08/2024 14:08

Well done to your DS @JustHereWithMyPopcorn

EwwSprouts · 22/08/2024 14:23

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Fab news. Congratulations to him.

That sounds quite scary @PhotoDad Had they gone for windsurfing?

Acinonyx2 · 22/08/2024 16:43

My sympathies to all those WFH (as I do most of the summer) and feel the house is unusually full of large younger people. I do feel I'm running a hotel and Uber service at the moment. And the food 😱and the laundry 😭Dh doesn't dare WFH, just as well, I'd lose my mind...

Oblomov24 · 23/08/2024 06:20

Well done Popcorn ds2.

Ds1 sat his 2nd resit yesterday, came home from Notts, was home for about 6 hours, then I've just dropped him at airport, he's off to Rome, Bologna (food tour) then Amafi Coast.

He has to back 2nd, he's got a PwC back-to-work-check in on 4th am, but then doesn't find out if he's actually allowed to stay on the course, ie has he passed his 2 x resits till 4th afternoon - pm!

Hope resits went well @Oblomov24 - the tour sounds fab!

DS has had two interviews online this week for jobs/schemes for next year and has to go to London next month for a second interview so he's happy with that. The scramble for a job for next year is overwhelming- especially when each application seems to take so much time . He's working on his dissertation too so even without much of a part time job over summer it's been full on.

Wild weather here today. Like Wuthering Heights out there!

AnneOfCleavage · 23/08/2024 09:22

Good luck with the interview process @craggyrat and your DS resit results @Oblomov24.

Congratulations to your DS on his GCSE results @JustHereWithMyPopcorn.

Been very wet here yesterday and super windy. Could hear bins blowing over throughout the night.
How scary for your DS @PhotoDad - hope you get a new tent sorted. This wasn't a DofE expedition was it?

Sunny here now and a lot calmer. Off to London to see a show later so hope the train tracks are clear after the blustery night.

Met DD's boyfriend for the first time and he's lovely. She's possibly meeting his this weekend and has been warned to expect a grilling from them - she told him she's not fussed as parents love her so I hope her confidence pans out 🤞🤞

crazycrofter · 23/08/2024 09:37

Aw, that's nice @AnneOfCleavage - both that you like him and that she's confident in how his parents will respond.

Dd has met someone, they're not officially an item yet but it seems to be heading that way and it's another long distance one. I really don't think she needs that this year, when she needs to be knuckling down! It also feels a bit deja vu, as this has happened the last three summers - meeting someone in August, things ramp up and then eventually end in Jan/Feb time. Hopefully this won't go the same way!

@craggyrat your ds seems to be very organised and forward thinking, but I guess applications start now for next summer. Good luck to him!

PhotoDad · 23/08/2024 09:49

How lovely, @AnneOfCleavage! It's awkward for my DS as I am a teacher at the same school as both him and his girlfriend, although I don't teach her.

DS is away with DW and DD, and on a campsite with lots of other windsurfers, so they are looking out for each other. They spent last night in a cottage, and will be able to buy a new tent from a local camping shop. It could be worse, but it's definitely not my cup of tea!

Comefromaway · 23/08/2024 09:57

My brother is at Leeds this weekend so I hope he has a strong tent.

Start of a busy weekend for us. Ds went to London yesterday to see a show, he & is friend arrived back in Leeds at around 2am. He is playing with his band in Manchester tonight then tomorrow night they are playing at a camping festival in North Wales. Sunday he is back to Leeds for a rehearsal for Mondays concert.

Meanwhile me, dh and dd are off to Birmingham on Sunday to take advantage of the non cancellable hotel we booked for the cancelled concert then Monday we are driving up to Halifax to see ds play keyboard for his friend (a replacement gig for the cancelled Sunday one).

I do hope the roads are kind to us.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/08/2024 10:11

Good luck to anyone in a tent at the moment, I've seen some terrible clips online of Leeds festival and camp sites! @PhotoDad I can decide if this is good surfing weather of bad surfing weather??

Good luck to your DS @craggyrat job hunting is exhausting.

Have fun at the show @AnneOfCleavage

Enjoy your weekend family @Comefromaway , sounds busy for everyone!

PhotoDad · 23/08/2024 10:15

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Nobody was out windsurfing yesterday! Apparently 10mph winds = good for beginners, 20 for intermediate, 30 for advanced. Above that it's just dangerous. He has been at various competitions where there has been too much or too little wind and a day has been cancelled. (They don't mind rain, as they'll get wet anyway...)

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/08/2024 10:59

Thank goodness for that! 😄

ealingwestmum · 23/08/2024 12:15

Here's for positive outcomes for both your DCs Oblomov and Craggy.

We've not had the boy trouble here crazy, DD thinks she puts them off with her busy schedule. I feel a little sad that she calls herself Bridget but, also relieved that we don't have to pick up the heartbreak and challenges of long distance romances. Yet...

We're having a last minute wobble re getting everything together for tomorrow, Not helped by her picking up an eye infection (from too many late nights) resulting in her having to wear glasses for next 5 days (she only wears them to get to/from bathroom to put contacts in); I think seeing all her peers off to far flung destinations with parents in tow to help them has generated her 'I'm going to miss my parents' meltdown. Thankfully they don't last, and DH is much more sympathetic vs my pragmatic self. I've always been the less emotional one of the household.

crazycrofter · 23/08/2024 13:08

It's definitely good that she's single at the moment @ealingwestmum with her going so far away! Hope all goes well over the next few days and the wobbles subside!

Delphigirl · 23/08/2024 14:10

craggyrat · 23/08/2024 08:20

Ooh that’s great though craggy - well done to him and good luck for the next rounds!

Shimy · 24/08/2024 09:02

@craggyrat All the very best to your DS with the job interviews. Looking for a job is a job in itself like you said it is sooo time consuming! it takes at least a week to complete just the application form (many a lot longer!) thank God for some of the virtual interviews but the travelling up and down also eats into all their time. I was so glad when ds1 secured a job just as he started his final yr so it didn't clash with his dissertation. The scramble for jobs is fierce!

craggyrat · 24/08/2024 10:08

Thanks for the good lucks everyone. @Shimy Yes so much else going on with summer dissertation work and it gets expensive when you're having to travel from Yorkshire with an overnight stay.
