Thread 51 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer 24 - End of Uni Yr 2

1000 replies

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 15:15

2024 Summer, end of year 2 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

@crazycrofter well done to your DS - he has done amazingly well!

@273NewNamesagain glad to hear that things have stabilized - hopefully things will continue to improve.

PhotoDad · 15/08/2024 12:33

Congratulations!

ealingwestmum · 15/08/2024 12:37

Shimy, hope you manage to secure some accommodation in Reading soon!

Delphigirl · 15/08/2024 12:38

I’m sorry to hear about your elders @ealingwestmum . We are dealing with that x2 mothers, and it is difficult and emotionally pretty draining. Lovely that you have dd there for her last little bit of time before her Egyptian adventures.
@273NewNamesagain gosh that’s a lot for him to deal with but agree that stable and better than a few months ago are both good steps forward. A period of time to consolidate, pressure off, sounds exactly what he needs.

ealingwestmum · 15/08/2024 12:46

We're called sandwich generation for good reason Delphi! But I am assuming, like in your household, that our young are very good, when home, at assisting and deflecting some of the duties by stepping up. I know my DD has valued the effort DH and I make in supporting 2x mothers and charms (disarms in my mother's case) where possible by spending time with them.

Alwaysplayspicc · 15/08/2024 14:11

Congratulations on all the wonderful exam results, and particularly Cantonet and crazy's DSs!!!!! I love reading about triumph in the face of adversity and they have both done incredibly well to overcome sizeable hurdles.

DS got A*AB, which we are over the moon about, given year 13 being, in his words, " the worst year of my life".
He's done better than we dared hope.

craggyrat · 15/08/2024 14:17

Massive congrats @Alwaysplayspicc - fab results

AnneOfCleavage · 15/08/2024 14:20

@ealingwestmum @Delphigirl yes DD taught me that phrase as she did sociology at A level. That's another reason I'm only around to dip in and out on here too as quite consumed with looking out for elderly relatives. DD came with me to visit a nonagenarian rellie this morning and whilst there I had a phone all from another one so it was great she could amuse them whilst I was busy on the phone.

Great news re DS's reults @crazycrofter - considering he was practically self taught he should take all the credit and not the school. You must be so so relieved.

@273NewNamesagain so sorry to hear about your Dcat and DS's gf ending things seemingly out of the blue.
It sounds like he has some fab plans to visit friends, and having a car makes a huge difference.

AnneOfCleavage · 15/08/2024 14:22

Ahh @Alwaysplayspicc just seen your update. Amazing results too 👏

BIG celebrations all round on here today I think 🎉

Seeline · 15/08/2024 14:23

@Alwaysplayspicc congratulations to your DS! Brilliant results after all he has been through.

273NewNamesagain · 15/08/2024 14:29

That’s brilliant @Alwaysplayspicc , anyway but particularly after the year he has had.

Comefromaway · 15/08/2024 14:30

Congratulations to all who got exam results today.

Delphigirl · 15/08/2024 14:30

Yes sandwich generation with added menopause 🤣
@Alwaysplayspicc those are AMAZING results let alone on top of all he has been through.

Can I just say that I don’t think it is a coincidence that so many of these kids with really significant challenges in their lives this year have done so incredibly well. I think they have been lucky enough to win the lottery of life by having such incredible mothers. Really. My admiration to you all.

EwwSprouts · 15/08/2024 14:32

Congratulations on all the exam successes. So many have done very well in the face of adversity and health issues. Enjoy celebrating!

crazycrofter · 15/08/2024 14:49

@273NewNamesagain it sounds like things are going in the right direction, despite your worries. I hope he’s able to find something he really wants to do, but he’s got plenty of time.

@Alwaysplayspicc amazing! Onwards and upwards for him I’m sure, he’s coped with so much this year, the resilience he’s developed will stand him in good stead. Is he going to uni?

EasilyDefined · 15/08/2024 18:01

@Alwaysplayspicc so pleased for your DS, after everything he's gone through.

@273NewNamesagain glad to hear things are slowly moving in the right direction for DS.

Sandwich generation thing starting to kick in here too, my parents are starting to need more and more support and my DCs are less independent than most their ages. But we take each day one at a time. One of the nicest things that has happened today is that I rang DD again at about 10.30 and she said "by the way I have rung Grandma to tell her" which is not something I've had to prompt or even
mention, she just did it.

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2024 18:13

Lots of nice news here today. Well done/phew to all involved!

OublietteBravo · 15/08/2024 20:07

Just checking in to say that DS hot into his first choice uni despite missing his offer by a grade (he was 4 marks off making his offer). I’m so relieved! He’s off to Newcastle, which is almost as far away from DD (Exeter - Penryn Campus) as he can get. Mind you, his insurance offer was Aberdeen…

Seeline · 15/08/2024 20:14

Congratulations @OublietteBravo ! Mine were at opposite sides of the country which was far enough 😁

crazycrofter · 15/08/2024 20:19

Well done to ds @OublietteBravo ! You’ll be doing lots of driving!

OublietteBravo · 15/08/2024 20:56

I certainly will. Penryn is 300 miles away from us. Newcastle-upon-Tyne is a mere 200 miles!

Can’t quite believe we’ve made it through the school years. DH and I are considering an early October holiday to celebrate!

EasilyDefined · 15/08/2024 21:09

Congrats to DS @OublietteBravo . Lots of you with another DC flying off to uni! Lots of my RL friends have their DCs going too. Here it is business as usual because DD is staying on at college and DS goes back to uni, but next year will be lots of changes with one graduating and one finishing A levels part 2.

ealingwestmum · 15/08/2024 22:05

@Alwaysplayspicc and @OublietteBravo very well done to both your boys! Don’t think about the logistics right now OB, it’ll work itself out :)

crazycrofter · 15/08/2024 22:08

@OublietteBravo I’m feeling the same! Ds who just did A Levels was a particular challenge - from crying every day in nursery/reception, to being bullied in years 3 and 4 and eventually pulled out of school, home educating for years 5 and 6, then 11plus prep and grammar school where we had loads of behaviour issues before (and after!) he got his ADHD diagnosis. Sixth form was more drama of a different variety too, so I’m breathing a huge sigh of relief! Fortunately he’s a lovely lad and has never really been much trouble at home! He just did not fit into the straitjacket of school at all!

mummyinbeds · 15/08/2024 23:19

Congratulations all round for A level results today.
Just catching up after taking DD and her stuff back to Aberystwyth. She can't actually move in to her house until September but it was the only time I had free to transport her clutter. I was pleasantly surprised by the house. It's old but clean and lovely.
@OublietteBravo good luck with the long distance driving - DD is a mere 195 miles but the Welsh mountains mean it takes 5 hours. DS is going to be a 761 mile drive away due the next year😬
