Thread 51 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer 24 - End of Uni Yr 2

1000 replies

Oblomov24 · 17/05/2024 15:15

2024 Summer, end of year 2 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Wasn't called Le Nain, was it??

Don't think so but it was in a similar area from my very vague memory!

Piggywaspushed · 13/08/2024 16:50

Yes, lovely . Next to two porn cinemas. Delightful.

Love it. They will have a fantastic time. Every adventure needs a story or two.

I think RATW is what inspired DS1 to do this. He may miss the support cars and cameramen to give out hugs.

🤣 That does sort of ruin the whole traveling on your wits element of it.
DD would miss her mobile phone far too much. I wouldn't miss the message I got during her last trip to Ghana - 'Mum, I've turned Google location on because I might have been kidnapped'. I could only track her in Cairo two years ago because she used my bank card in a cash point a taxi driver took her to. A 17 year old with no mobile for two whole days - the absolute horror 😱

Piggywaspushed · 13/08/2024 17:27

I'm in awe of her!

ealingwestmum · 13/08/2024 18:48

She sounds very level headed mummy, a great strength even if it does give you sleepless nights!

Some good news for DD here, her Spring Week has resulted in a 6 week summer 2025 offer in Belfast, same stream of business tech consulting. Great timing as she was dreading starting the penultimate year application process for next summer whilst being overseas.

Have my fingers crossed for your DS Craggy for final stages of RAF. And for any other DC undergoing the prospective internship stages right now.

crazycrofter · 13/08/2024 20:11

Well done to your dd @ealingwestmum , that’s fantastic. Might next year’s summer internship result in a job offer after she graduates?

Dd and friend ended up in a really dodgy area when they were in Rome at Easter, she said prostitutes were walking around naked and they felt really unsafe. It was also a really dusty apartment, and dd is allergic to dust so got no sleep. Thankfully they found another airbnb for the rest of the week. I hope dd broke the news that she hadn’t been kidnapped quite quickly @mummyinbeds rather than leave you hanging?!

Delphigirl · 13/08/2024 20:38

That’s fantastic@ealingwestmum , she must have really impressed them! Well done her. 🎉

ealingwestmum · 13/08/2024 21:35

I guess it does for a % of students Crazy but she dare not think that far ahead!

craggyrat · 14/08/2024 08:36

That's fab @ealingwestmum!

PhotoDad · 14/08/2024 13:11

Congratulations to @ealingwestmum DD!

When I was interrailing, I and others happily piled into the back of a van in central Europe with the offer of a cheap B&B. God knows what could have happened...

I am finally on top of my late dad's affairs; I've found a probate firm who are happy to deal with the combination of a Jersey bank account, Jersey-law will, an executor company which no longer exists, and a large pending HMRC refund as the only UK asset. I've had several people describe the situation as "interesting," which you don't want to hear in those circumstances.

I've booked a trip to Jersey, where I grew up, for us in October half-term to inter his ashes alongside my mum's. I didn't recognise the name of the (somewhat fancy) hotel that I found. It was only after booking that I realised it was a new name for the place where I used to meet my dad for lunch, when we were both working in St Helier, many years ago!!

ealingwestmum · 14/08/2024 13:36

It’s good to hear you are getting on top of things Photodad. The October trip sounds like a lovely way to reminisce the old days whilst putting him to rest next to your mum.

EwwSprouts · 14/08/2024 14:03

@ealingwestmum That is great news! She must have stood out for all the right reasons.

@PhotoDad How serendipitous!

ealingwestmum · 14/08/2024 15:03

Thank you so much everyone.

AnneOfCleavage · 14/08/2024 20:36

Been trying to get to catch up with you all after a long break away on this thread! [Waves to all] 👋👋

So sorry to hear about your dad @PhotoDad but your last update sounds very fitting. I've never been to Jersey but it's on my bucket list to visit.

What an amazing trip your DS's will have @Piggywaspushed

Congrats to your DD on her next year's internship @ealingwestmum

DD has not managed to secure any work this summer but has quite a bit of summer uni work to get through so she's not too fussed. She's having to borrow money from us every month to cover 2nd year house rent as student loan won't kick in til mid Sept. She's stayed in her uni house 4 nights in total since moving in mid June so she's not getting her monies worth.
Has met a fella in our home town so she's happy to stay here all summer - they'll have "the talk" come Sept but I have a feeling this one may stick despite the distance 🤞

Thinking of all those who are picking up results today.

Delphigirl · 15/08/2024 07:46

Good luck those picking up A level results!! My dd is like @EasilyDefined ’s DD. Gone into school to get them herself and I will just have to wait until she phones or returns to find out what the story is.
She appears to be cool as a cucumber but claims to be “a little”nervous…,

BlueMarigold · 15/08/2024 08:16

Good luck for Alevel results!

Delphigirl · 15/08/2024 08:37

Hurrah she did brilliantly and into her 1st choice 👍👍👍

ealingwestmum · 15/08/2024 08:45

Fabulous news Delphi, now she can really get into the nitty gritty for her gap year! 👏

Seeline · 15/08/2024 08:58

Great news @Delphigirl !

Good luck to the rest of you 🍀

Shimy · 15/08/2024 09:00

@Delphigirl Congratulations! so happy for you. All the exciting stuff next..accommodation confirmation, last minute shopping, timetables.. Smile.

Congratulations @ealingwestmum that's a fantastic internship.

I spotted @Cantonet on another thread congratulations @Cantonet !

In the meantime, DS is still looking for a place to live in Reading to start his placement. He starts on the 5th so very worrying.
